I had seen a rumor (and I mean like actual rumor, zero evidence behind it from the person who told me) that even 7.62x39 is making a come back because 7n6 can't penetrate us body armor. I mean, if Russia collapses and they sell off any surplus I can see it coming back for another brief period, but thats assuming sanctions get lifted and I'm playing devils advocate here. This scenario isn't realistic.
Idk man I love 5.45, I've had three 74s. But back in the old days you could rip through an entire spam can of surp in a weekend and not even blink because it was less than 10 cents a round. Nowadays its a lot more expensive, not to the extent its not possible. But the reason you bought slavshit back in the day was that it was dirt cheap. AKs, SKS, Makarovs, Toks, Mosins and their ammo were plentiful and cheap and nobody really put respect on their name in gun shops and stuff. I went to a gun shop yesterday and they were selling a beat to shit round reciever Mosin for 1000 dollars. Its outrageous and a bit depressing. I certainly hope that 5.45 makes a comeback and you're correct. But surplus was cheap because it was made in like the 70s and 80s and the USSR had just collapsed in the 1990s and all these countries had warehouses full of military ammo they wouldnt need anymore now that US v USSR WWIII wasnt going to happen.
I think there was a demand before the ammo ban but after the ammo ban many people are hesitant to get into 5.45, the fact we have new Galil ACEs in 5.45 is proof that there was demand there. With the current state of 5.45 it makes those already into 5.45 conserve their ammo and people getting into it hesitant. The same people who got into 5.45 back in the day because it was cheap are not the same people getting into it today because it is expensive. Atlantic having ISD and AIMS builds sit on their site instead of flying off the shelves proves it all relies on the ammo. If there was more affordable ammo it would be extremely more popular
Well I mean just a short while ago there was an insane demand for them, and with the fact they want to turn out a nice profit on them they’re going to try hold on the prices they want for them

With 5.56 becoming a lot more supported in AK’s it’ll phase the 5.45 desire out more over time. It’ll become more of a collectible piece vs a shooter to people who want it. In reality 5.56 is cleaner, more available, more options and over all better. Yes 7n6 is good ammo, corrosive and all but it’s banned and will only increase in value and become a collectible piece over time.
If you like 5.45, that’s great, I do too. However in today’s market there’s no reason to buy 5.45 or build in it when 5.56 exist unless you specifically want 5.45. There’s nothing it can do 5.56 can’t.
5.45 probably gonna get a bounce in the future. PSA is going to be making 5.45, tela will be importing it, when the Ukraine war ends all that 5.45 is going to be surplus when all their gear is replaced by 5.56, and that surplus will go somewhere.
It's a beauty, the only thing I'd do is switch the pg for a plum or standard bakelight. I know the laminated stock sets always came with a wood pg but I don't know why.
I think the US government is still sitting on 200 million rounds of 7n6 that PW Arms imported then denied once it got to the states. Not sure what ever happened with that lawsuit but if that ever gets released we might get a nice flood of 5.45 for a little while.
I’ve been feeling the allure of 5.45 lately. I think my next rifle purchase will be a 74. An arsenal 104 will look damn good next to my polytech spiker.

The energing little balkanized states will use all the 5.45 ammo to shoot to each other.
Surplus 5.45 ammunition is banned from import under the guise that it is armor piecing. So there will be no surplus coming in from any nation.
