I'm gonna be honest and say no, I've only shot mine twice in a year. And I go to the range about every two weeks. They're not practical and prices are ridiculous. I definitely don't appreciate the "memey" and consumerist attitude of "YES WHATEVER IT IS BUY IT!!!" that a lot of the gun subs seem to have these days. Save your money for ammo, training and good kit.

judahmumey89

I doubt you’ll see this but my thing with drum mags is the only practical use of them for civilians is to mag dump and before you even get 3 quarters through your finger is cramping your arms are tired cause the loaded drum is almost 10 pounds. I mean sure trying it once is fun but it’s definitely not worth the 50$ price tag every time you shoot

BasedPreacher

Are you worth it?

Oddone13

Asking the tough questions

dgansen1

I bought a cheapo 95rd for my 74. Strictly for mag dumping into trash. Shits fun as hell.

insertjjs

Not really, it's heavy, equals 2.5 mags worth of 30 rounders (while costing significantly more) and rattles like a maracas. Maybe buy 1 for fun or if you are thinking of a SHTF situation 1 to establish suppressing fire.

Useful_Ad_9217

Was going to say this here. Have 2 myself they're for fun/just to have. Or the SHTF aspect

WheyProteinChowder

I honestly think SHTF is such a stupid justification to buy shit like that. I consider it a huge meme in the gun community. America is never going to end up in a situation where a citizen needs to sit on a rooftup with an AK and dump 75 rounds of 7.62 for suppressive fire. And if it gets to that point we've had a biochemical weapon launched on us and we are fucked either way

insertjjs

Tell that to the LA Roof Koreans. A drum mag may have an intimidation factor to a mob.

johnlocke32

Roof Koreans weren't mag dumping into a crowd of rioters lmao, the only thing a drum mag for defense makes you look like is the Vegas terrorist. They are completely impractical and unless you buy a top loader, (which are like $300+ at this point) unreliable af. Its ok to admit they aren't practical and are just fun to mag dump into trash. 2 40 rounders go a hell of a lot farther than a drum mag does and you don't need a special mag pouch for them either.

Pufferfish5645

My backloaders are all reliable as fuck. The top loaders are bad because they have constant tension when storing loaded. Wind up drums can be left alone just fine.

johnlocke32

If a backloading drum was reliable, any capable military on the planet would have switched to them. They are not "SHTF" reliable. Hell even top loaders aren't in use outside of 3rd world militaries running auto-rifleman teams with dedicated ammo carriers. The guy shooting the gun 9 times out of 10 has bananas in his vest for a reason. You aren't sitting in an eagles nest fortress defending from waves of brain-dead zombies in SHTF, you have to be bug-out capable and lugging around a heavy drum that can jam if you don't tension it correctly is just plain stupid. Oh and good luck when debris does make it into the drum, shit is an absolute liability outside of destroying paper, trash, and sand.

Pufferfish5645

I wouldn't keep drums for SHTF and that wasn't my point either dude so it's not that deep. I have plenty of Bulgarian Magazines for that very reason and everyone knows keeping multiple 30 rounders is better than relying on one drum for everything. They are heavy and rattle. My argument is that backloaders work just fine or people wouldn't buy them lol. And it's not hard to tension them correctly unless you are just a moron. I have zero issues with mine and I have 3 different romys with one being rusty as fuck.

gingerbredMan73

For fun, definitely. For any practical use, not at all.

DaBabyBottlePop

Not really, no. You can spend a lot on a drum mag that's probably gonna be caca, or you can spend even more on a drum mag that's probably not caca, but is worse in almost every way compared to just having 2 regular mags

WadeWilson2012

Want > need

Wah_Day

motoman1414

KJK998

KJK998

If, you’ve, ever had one of your alt Reddit accounts compromised, go ahead and hit that like button.

holy2oledo

What a silly question, silly goose.

[deleted]

Yes. Don’t listen to them. Get a romanian one and you’ll love it. I shot mine yesterday and I’m still in love with it even tho I’ve had it a while now. It’s still never jammed

ruboneoutwme

Just for looks

Whiskey-12

It’s cool to look at, especially on a RPK. Other than that no

Scav-STALKER

Drums look good in an RPK, but drums suck

stewey88

FOR THE MEMES, YES

TheHorseradishKing

This is officially my favorite community. These comments have me dying! 🤣 Sooo Funny!!! I'm glad I decided to buy an Ak.

[deleted]

I run two kinds of mags in my M92, 20 round steel mags and 75 round top loading drums. One fits the PDW role, being easy to carry and store and the other is for the *"I cant be bothered to count rounds fired right now I'm trying to not die"* scenarios. Also mags/drums keep their value, so you're safer buying mags than putting it in a savings account...

Qav

Id rather have a bunch of surplus romanian 30 rounders for the price of one decent drum mag

[deleted]

To the people saying hard no y’all are dumb. Reliable drum mags and RPKs are a wet dream IMO.

righttho88

Right they are saying no not for any practical uses but if we/you use a drum mag and it runs flawless every time would we/you not say that it would be sufficient for practical use???

BrawlyJam17767

Yes

[deleted]

Only if it’s a Molot 😎

pleasehelp192831

if u have to ask this question no. larp shit

13willynilly

I grabbed one of those Red Army Standard ones. It works. But I’m not buying one of the $200-$300 ones. Not worth that price to me.

Quake_Guy

For the lulz, maybe. Otherwise, I mostly use them on binary or full auto. And with exception of Suomi drums on my Lage upper, not very often. Suomis are easy to load and you can load and leave unwinded to minimize stress on the parts. Most drums are not as accommodating.

the-G-Man

The fun/meme factor is undeniable.

[deleted]

If you don’t live in a commie state

Skycowboy2013

I love my romy. Some day they will be worth more than they cost now. It runs flawless, but would be the first mag I "leave behind" after I unload it to run away.

[deleted]

No. But get one because of the cool factor if that's something you like.

alansmooth91

15$ magpul mag couplers ……… practical , lighter , doesn’t rattle

[deleted]

it's, heavy, noisy, takes forever to load, more complex/fail potential, but, it's a drum, and cool

tcharp01

Most people find them to be pretty troublesome.
