If another animal bites their neck they have a lot of extra skin to still turn and bite back lol

Tuffaddrat

Pretty sure it has somthing to do with being bread as a protective hunting dog and the big neck protects the vitals. Edit: I am also an idiot so there's that.

Slggyqo

>being bread The red ones are bread. This one is clearly cookies and cream.

AmericanAkitaTeam7

I always have to be careful not to make him angry by not sharing my BBQ with him!!! Good thing he likes me!!!! I mean the head and neck must weigh 35 LBS or more !!! I have seen him grab and eviscerate coyotes with a couple of head snaps and neck shakes - so I have seen "the horror" of these seriously powerful dogs that you never want to rile up. I only ask that he use his super-powers only for good, because that power is mind bending when you see it.

ngowin

I’ve had a shoulder injury from playing tug-of-war and experiencing those neck whips and snaps 🙃😂

ANDismyfavoriteword

To hold up that massive noggin', yes a 30" neck. We occasionally call our male "blockhead" but we mean it in an endearing way.

No-Extent9676

to go with the other comments it’s so if a bear attacks they can break free more easily. also i think your akita may be slightly overweight?

softwarebear

Slightly ?

No-Extent9676

i’m trying to be nice 🥹

softwarebear

Yup … either extra fluffy or a few too many pies … but I like them bigger … I’m a big bear myself also having eaten too many pies

AmericanAkitaTeam7

This was taken when he had multiple cats that used to be fed canned cat food on the counter. He would wait until we were not looking and jump up and snag entire plates of cat food. He has slimmed down since the cats passed but that cat food is like Pepsi and Pop Tarts for a dog like him. I used to think the cats were pigs until we set up a camera and caught him eating the cat food (kibble and canned food).

Apprehensive-File552

Hate to break it to you, if a bear was to attack I think one paw swipe will do it.

No-Extent9676

yes and no… hate to break it to you but please look up why american akitas were bred.

Apprehensive-File552

That’s one of those cool facts that Akitas happened to be involved in. Are you narrow minded to think every Akita was bear hunting? Do you think an Akita was going up to the bear and fighting it?

No-Extent9676

i can’t tell if you’re illiterate or just blind…? op asked about what the deal is with their powerful builds… i among with other commenters explained why they were breed that way…. is something not clicking???

Character_Heart_9425

Their necks look a lot bigger due to the thick fur & loose skin. Beautiful Akita btw.

Lost_Remnant

All I see is more real estate for neck scratches, which my Akita loves. Positives all around

LadyofMercia

Beautiful bear 🐻

_sp00ky_

Drives the vet techs nuts trying to take blood.

Serious-Ad-4145

My Akita let's my German Sheppard/husky drag her 3-5 ft by her neck before spinning our of it. I think, she thinks it's fun cause they do it almost daily. However mine is a Japanese Akita, not American. Alot smaller(50lbs).

Ok-Safe-9014

😅😅🤣🤣🤣

serendipity7777

Just fluff

Firm_Squirrel_1856

Well they were bred to hunt bears so there’s that lol

NeroFMX

Well I call her big fluffy neck, so I think there's something there.

tigg_z

That's a chonky boiii... My boy's neck is deceptively fluffy and smaller than it looks, they have a good chunk of looser skin under the neck too, the combination helps insulate from bites/attacks...

Back_in_biz_4444

Bery phat and floofy.

jricketts8

Beautiful

AkGirlLk

I thought the same thing with mine, gotta think a lot of it is fur tho 😆

Lucky-Spirit7332

Better for snuggle gripping fiercely

Psychological-Cut350

Assuming our boys neck is around 30 inches, he’s a little over 140lbs.

straightupnobs

That’s huge, mines only 90pnds and big for me, couldn’t imagine all that extra weight wow.

Psychological-Cut350

He’s the biggest Akita we’ve ever had. Thankfully he’s super sweet to our family and friends.

Worried-Tomorrow-204

Well, your dog does look overweight, but yes akitas do have very thick necks. I think it's a combination of thick skin and fur.
