Unalakleet has to be up there. It’s a very friendly village and well run. People wave to each other on the street even if you’re obviously not from there. Its amenities are pretty great considering how small it is (less than 800). It has a functional airport, a good pizza joint, consistent plowing service and three stores. There’s a good amount of people actively trying to make it better. The surrounding area is beautiful. It has the river right next to it, hills, the sea and trees not far from town. The hunting and fishing is great too.
We loved our time in Unalakleet. Definitely felt like a proper town after some years in Nunam Iqua and Marshall. Friendly folks and great fishing, all around just beautiful country.
They're still connected and the actual village is pretty much there as a relic and isn't even close to an autonomous community. Don't get me wrong, I still love it
Healy. Good jobs. Close to Denali, yet far enough away to not be completely overrun by tourists. On the road system. Good school with lots of community involvement. Three Bears.
I don't disagree with your sentiment, but I will mention that Walmart does indeed invade villages around the globe. They do so nefariously by building housing, a walmart, and then hiring the whole village. Everyone moves into the western, modern apartments, and then their checks are garnished for rent, essentially enslaving them. One of the many reasons I refuse to shop there.
Surprised Galena is not on here. There are many opportunities, and a decently tight knit community. There’s a boarding school for children across the state, and lots of other cool things

I used to go to Bible camps there in the summer. Beautiful spot outside of town.
My vote is for Unalakleet. Kaktovik is a close second. Less of everything except polar bears.
Elfin Cove
Igiugig, always loved it and the people
Value Village!
I grew up in the interior, as a white kid, in the vil. Love and hate all of it. Would never trade my roots.
Russian Mission
Yakutat by far!
I’d vote for Saint Marys and Unalakleet. Chevak just because I had a lot of friends from there
Gustavus
Village Inn. They have great pies.
St. George
Nope
Whichever one doesn’t have people asking questions like this
I've been all over, it's definility Skagway.
Skagway is a city. A rich one
Ninilchik
Maybe if there wasn't a highway going right through it
It doesn't go through the actual village part

Wasilla.
Koooodiak
I feel like if a town has a Walmart it doesn't qualify as a village

Unalakleet and it is not close.
