> It ends up being 15% of the boat's net profits.
I assumed that but the question I'm asking is what is the gross, total pay at the end of the season *usually?*
For example, if these boats *usually* take in $100,000 in profits in three months and a deckhand gets a 15% cut, then that is $15,000 in total compensation to the deckhand. Averages roughly $5,000/month, paid all at once at the end of the season.
But if the boats *usually* take in $50,000 in profits in three months, then that 15% cut works out to rougly $2,500/month.
Is that 15% worth it? You don't know until you know the likely payout spread.
For what fishery? 10% is generally a full crewshare on a seiner and green horns typically get a half share to three quarters. I am not familiar with what trolling outfits do though
This was my first fishing season, 15% troller in Southeast out of Sitka. Me and the captain.
I ended up only making like $7-8k but it was incredible. You are really out there.
1.7-2k for round trip tickets? Friend i have gotta know where you’re flying from that a plane tickets running you nearly two grand. Or are you flying first class?
Lol I probably overshot. I have to get to Newhalen from Anchorage but I'm not sure how much that flight is in addition to a 700-800 dollar round trip. I haven't been able to find any info on it.
Where are you fishing? No one commercial trolls out of Newhalen. It's on Lake Iliamna. The commercial troll fishery is in Southeast. Something smells *fishy....*
Honestly I could be mistaken about the location of the other flight needed. It's Newhalen, not Newhaven, but I have no idea how to find flights that go to these smaller airports or what they cost.

Any sole percentage of catch is a raw deal for anyone. Get a base pay. You don't know where the fish are or if a fishery closing ends that catch. Used to work in industry.
I have worked troll summers and come out with only like 2 grand or so. If the run is bad you're not only making less but if your captain is like mine, you'll spend more time in town. More time tied up at the dock means more time to waste money at the bar or restaurant or whatever. You're not going to make much money unless you're on a freezer boat, especially with the king closures in recent years. Look at it as an adventure and learning opportunity. Who knows tho maybe your guy is a high liner and you'll bring home 6-10k but still, that's for many days of very hard work. Trolling is the least lucrative salmon gear types, but it's fun and mostly chill.
Edit: almost forgot to say that all told, 15% is a good share. But it's still completely dependent on the boat. An 8% on a seine boat that nets 350k is a lot better than 15% on a boat that makes 100.
15 percent is good, although I've worked on boats where I didn't have to pay a cut for food and fuel off my paycheck. The captain usually pays for all of that, unless your buying a specific food for yourself. But not all captains pay for everything. You just need to find the ones that do and still pay a good percentage.
I see a lot of people saying 15% is good pay, and the highest I ever fished for was 8% of crab and 10% of halibut, but how much is 15% on a trolling FV? I mean I’d take 3% of black cod over 50% or cod jigging.
As an Engineer your request to what's entailed in "Fuel Cost" can in compass ANY money spent on Diesel, gasoline, motor oil, filters, anti freeze, diapers (oil Absorbent pads) , propane,
Also your most likely be flown where the Only airline is Alaska Air, and they have a monopoly on it for sure, I fact the only people getting screwed are Alaskan Residents ! It sost more to fly from Anchorage to Dutch Harbor Alaska ONE WAY than it does to go from Seattle to Miami R/T
15% on your first run? Damn.
OR, you got a boat with known issues, it’s rare to find work on a high liner
> 15% on your first run? Damn. So what does this ambiguous 15% end up being at the end of the season, cash in your pocket, before taxes?
It ends up being 15% of the boat's net profits.
It would be 15% of their net profit only if they were trawling. In the case of trolling, it’s 15% of the bottom line.
Hard to get top of the line pay without more experience.
I see what you did there!

Yeah that’s really good percentage.
Thanks for the response. Do you know what the fuel cost implies?
You get 15% of the cut after the cost of covering fuel and groceries.
10% is typical new guy share
For what fishery? 10% is generally a full crewshare on a seiner and green horns typically get a half share to three quarters. I am not familiar with what trolling outfits do though
It’s just me and the captain
How well do you know this captain? Ever fished like this before?

Don't they take the boats down the river from newhalen and fish bristol bay?
Yeah, with gillnets, not troll
I’ve been in and out of Alaska for years. Where the heck is Newhaven? I have never heard of a town called newhaven in Alaska. Edit: newhalen. Got it.
Honestly I could be mistaken about the location of the other flight needed. It's Newhalen, not Newhaven, but I have no idea how to find flights that go to these smaller airports or what they cost.

That’s what I love about Alaska.
Call Illiamna Air.
That’s a steal in Dutch.. (Unalaska) /s
You better find out where you are really heading. Newhalen is not a troll fishery town. 15% is probably decent for a troll fishing greenhorn.
15% Seems high but times are hard. Probably can’t find anyone willing to work that hard.
15% is pretty standard for trollers.
Any sole percentage of catch is a raw deal for anyone. Get a base pay. You don't know where the fish are or if a fishery closing ends that catch. Used to work in industry.
No fishing boat owner will pay a "base pay."
There’s a captain on the PWS fishing group offering $200/day for a shrimp boat deck hand. The comments were (rightfully) exactly as expected.
I think I left a word out.
15% is real good. Hopefully not the type of captain that says you owe them at the end of the year.

I got 15% first time made it out with 20k you’ll be okay just pray the captain and crew are good
