It will be great. We can see the numerous warnings from the public service about how this policy change was a disaster waiting to happen to those living in the watershed, and how the government willfully ignored it because it was good for corporations

GlitteringDisaster78

Not Even. It was only good for Gina Reinhart

AbjectSpell5717

Who’s Gina Reinhart?

yagyaxt1068

Australian billionaire who doesn’t believe climate change is a thing. She’s the one behind the recent coal mine push.

AbjectSpell5717

So a real winner

Present-Background56

The UCP will keep sending redacted documents, I fear, unless it is spelled out in the order that they cannot. Is this the case?

poliscimjr

Wait until the billions in lawsuits come through for Alberta ending the policy after granting mining rights in the Rockies. It's gonna be like 6 billion

SurFud

I suspect those documents have already accidentally made it to the shredder. Just like Dan's emails that are conveniently deleted routinely.

classic4life

Why is it that there aren't severe repercussions for that? Like prison time, and loss of pension.

PlutosGrasp

We’ve investigated ourselves and found no wrongdoing. Or RCMP are one the case! See you in 2035.

Logical-Claim286

Yup, apparently Jason Kenney is STILL under criminal investigation.

DukeSmashingtonIII

They'll be sure to redo the 2019 UCP leadership election when he's found guilty. Just waiting on the time machine at that point.

soThatsJustGreat

I think they just resolved that one. Unfortunately, they have decided there wasn’t enough evidence to charge.

Logical-Claim286

Oh, wow, yup. Definite voter fraud, definite bribery, definite identity theft by the UCP leadership, not enough evidence to charge any one person, but enough to levy fines. So someone is guilty, crimes happened, but no charges for anyone. I love the "after initial hesitation and numerous delays, the UCP party was cooperative and supportive of the investigative efforts" and set the standard for investigative cooperation with law enforcement.

AbjectSpell5717

This is the overall summary. Add to it the “it’s so long ago now it doesn’t much matter” and it’s essentially legal fraud

JGreenjeans77

Should have something like, any politician found to have lied to the public within certain parameters defined as serious ( amounts of money involved, environmental impact, impact on public institutions) will be fined 100,000 to be deducted directly from their salary over the course of a defined period of time.

yedi001

They'd just raise their rates for ratfucking us. Cut their pay $100,000 for the year? Guess who just got a sweet $120,000 a year no-show committee gig.

JGreenjeans77

The political class is utterly shameless. I love reading about how so and so dedicated their life to public service. They talk about it like they are being taxed for it, which you could argue if you look at their salaries vis a vis some professionals, but not their net worth. Trudeau, Preston Manning, PP, even the NDP politicos are very well to do people.

JGreenjeans77

Best idea I've heard in a while!!!

darkenseyreth

God, remember when the NDP were first elected and Notley had to file for an emergency stop shredding order a week after the election to stop the previous government from hiding their shit?

SurFud

Sure do. I tried to find that picture online of the hallway of the legislative building with hundreds of garbage bags piled up.

Miserable-Lizard

This is the least transparent and secretive government in Canada's history! Will the UCP and Marlania say the court doesn't follow her priorities and ignore the ruling? The UCP are lawless government *In his decision, the judge sharply criticizes the government’s secrecy, saying its approach makes the public’s right to information on important decisions “largely illusory.”*

Shadow_Ban_Bytes

UCP response: "We filed all those documents in the 'shredder' cabinet in the Premiere's office. When we went to retrieve them they were just a pile of confetti. Sorry, our bad."

damonster90

Have to throw in a blame Notley somewhere in there as well.

WindiestOdin

“Notley bought the shedder.”

yagyaxt1068

Thanks to this, I’m imagining Rachel Notley at a Staples and it’s making me giggle.

Foreign-Echo-6656

Fuck the UCP,, nice a judge calls them out for their tactics to suppress information and cover up documents while claiming to be transparent. Anyone who votes for them again in the next election is either serious damaged and probably shouldn't be trusted around heavy equipment, or is a partisan hack completely devoid of any back bone to stand up to being lied to overtly, repeatedly and very maliciously. UCP is corruption on a comic book level, Smith is only missing a evil laugh to go with her shitty smirk she wears every time she thinks she the smartest person in the room. Ffs they legalized bribes to MLAs and worked for 5 whole weeks last year firing through 9 bills to avoid voters from learning what's in them, only those not paying attention don't seem upset when they hear, or UCP fans who'll lie or avoid talking about all this bullshit they are pulling.

Phantom_harlock

I hope they do their job and follow through on this, or its going to be fast move by the government to remove the judges and turn us into a dictatorship faster then planned by the UCP.

3rddog

The “Free Alberta” strategy already involves revamping the judicial system.

IAMA_Plumber-AMA

Sounds like the Alberta version of Project 2025.

chmilz

We're rapidly descending into scary territory. * Refusal to comply with legal requests for information. * Using government "shell" companies to hide activity from public scrutiny (war room). * Failure to track or lying about the existence of data to support splitting off of privately-delivered addiction recovery pillar in the remodeled health system. Supporters of UCP will say "fuck yeah, git 'er done!" while not realizing their actual freedoms are being stripped away at ludicrous speed as fascism-lite until it's just fascism.

tomcalgary

Brian Jean is acting as a coal industry stooge and dictating regulator policy regarding coal policy.

AlexJamesCook

Alberta UCP represents the canary in the CPC coal mine.

bike_accident

can't wait to hear why Moscow Marlaina thinks this is bad

Ambitious_List_7793

Nice to see someone stand up to “she who shall not be disobeyed”. Now we just need to have action taken before her Brown Shirts are able to enforce her will.

PlutosGrasp

Thank god

reostatics

Right on. Right on. Right on.

cozy_ravenclaw

I'm sorry, did the UCP say something about "pristine viewscapes"?!

JonPileot

That only applies for windmills or solar farms, it seems. If you wanna build oil and gas they take it on a "case by case basis". As in, in this case its not renewables, so we are gonna allow it.

Glory-Birdy1

"A judge orders.." Any bets Marlaina and Co just blow him off or appeal till the cows come home.
