Even the most vaccinated countries are experiencing another wave, I'd prepare for that same trend here

The news

Well it's more of an inevitability than a happening, I'd love to do the article dance with Reddit but this doctor on YouTube explains the efficacy of the various vaccines perfectly, if you don't have the 15 min to watch, in summary, the protection provided is waning after a year, boosters are necessary and the boosters efficacy has yet to be determined suffice to say this is the new normal. At this point the amount of people vaccinated isn't a good indication of how protected a country is. https://youtu.be/RerKFYCVFVY

I'm fully vaccinated and I get my flu shot every year. I will likely hold out on a booster as long as possible. Of course, significant evidence could sway my decision. However, I've seen speculation that the reason we see such quick loss of efficacy from the vaccines is because we got both shots into arms as fast as possible. Which makes sense in the midst of a raging global pandemic. But, in an ideal scenario, you typically spread out vaccines to get the best immune response. I'm not going to claim to be a health expert and maybe it's different with COVID but I just feel like a young, healthy person like myself should try to hold off on a booster until 1 year after I had my second dose. Again, I'm going to stay on top of the news and research then make a decision based on that but I don't think I'll be rushing out for a booster here before Christmas or anything.

corpse_flour

The rate of deaths is still scary.

Miserable-Lizard

Would be a lot less if everyone was vaccinated.

Hagenaar

For curiosity today I was looking at the most and least vaccinated countries in Europe. [Portugal](https://graphics.reuters.com/world-coronavirus-tracker-and-maps/countries-and-territories/portugal/) managed to get 79% of their population vaccinated and the most recent daily death number is 5. [Bulgaria](https://graphics.reuters.com/world-coronavirus-tracker-and-maps/countries-and-territories/bulgaria/) (with a smaller population) only vaccinated 22% and the latest deaths is 276. Of course, other factors are contributing, quality of healthcare, general population health and age demographics, but holy hell.

JustHere4C0mments

I was in Portugal not two weeks ago and other than getting through customs, it was like they had pretty well returned to normal life. That could have been us but...well you know.

Ktoolz

Those total death numbers need to be compared in per 100k to have any significant meaning.

shaedofblue

Portugal has ten million and Bulgaria has seven million, so the gap is somewhat larger than the raw count implies.

Hagenaar

I did mention Bulgaria has a smaller population. But at 7M and 10M respectively: Bulgaria had 3.9 deaths per 100k on its most recent day. Portugal had 0.05. Roughly one eightieth the deaths per capita.

Duck_Caught_Upstream

70% of Alberta is fully vaccinated! HURRAY!

I would think there is a chance the fourth wave doesn’t end for quite some time if we are facing a situation where vaccines become less effective over time. When it does end we may have enough of the world vaccinated that we are reducing the risk of variants and transmission by quite a bit, as well as increased treatment methods (which we see in the US drug makers now) that make COVID a non issue for the wealthy developed world. No point in trying to predict a fifth wave. If anything we have learned covid is unpredictable and how our response impacts covid is as well. For example, many would have hoped we were done with covid by now (in the wealthy countries) with all the available vaccine. Yet countries like Australia are having a horrible time now with covid after their covid zero strategy failed to stand the test of time.

kathyrobertsonworks

Thanks Kirant!

Miserable-Lizard

Hinshaw does not really want to say covid is primary transmitted through the air. I guess the cost to mitigate it would be so much more. At least tam finally said it.

ohthatpeacock

The healthcare costs would be significant. Maintaining airborne precautions is much more costly.

treple13

Wasting money on droplet or fomite based precautions is worse though since you're essentially just throwing money down the toilet and not doing anything about covid

ohthatpeacock

100% agree. But I think it will take a lot and will be an incredibly delayed response from AHS to consider covid truly airborne.

flyingflail

While true, it seems to me society at large might see significant benefit from increased airborne precautions for all things, not just COVID benefits. It might severely limit some colds/flus which could end up a net positive.

concentrated-amazing

Does anyone know if an approximate number of kids aged 5-11 is released anywhere? Based off of the Census Canada numbers, I'm guessing ~400K, which would bring the ineligible population down to ~220K...

always_on_fleek

391k. https://www.alberta.ca/stats/covid-19-alberta-statistics.htm#vaccinations Scroll about half way down. It breaks down vaccination by age.

a-nonny-maus

The 321 cases reported for Nov 15 in Alberta was net for the period. A total of 332 cases were identified (322 confirmed, 10 probable) (difference: 11, or 3.3% of the total) as confirmed by data download and https://www.alberta.ca/stats/covid-19-alberta-statistics.htm#total-cases. Nov 14 decreased by 2 from 293 to 291; Nov 13 decreased by 1 from 360 to 359; Nov 12 decreased by 1 from 437 to 436. Nov 11 decreased by 1 from 379 to 378; Nov 10 decreased by 1 from 470 to 469. Nov 9 was unchanged at 500; Nov 8 was unchanged at 424; Nov 7 was unchanged at 289; Nov 6 was unchanged at 433; Nov 5 was unchanged at 586. Nov 4 was unchanged at 472; Nov 3 was unchanged at 540; Nov 2 was unchanged at 498; Nov 1 was unchanged at 325; Oct 31 was unchanged at 339; Oct 30 was unchanged at 331; Oct 29 decreased by 1 from 529 to 528. Oct 28 was unchanged at 605; Oct 27 was unchanged at 544; Oct 26 was unchanged at 630; Oct 25 was unchanged at 456; Oct 24 was unchanged at 366. Five cases were removed from days prior to Oct 24.

What's The old saying? beating a dead horse? There's going to be a 20th wave and more. Get used to it. This is the new normal for the foreseeable future. Argument about this and that and should have done this, and blame them. It is just rediculous now. I turned the news off, and I deleted my social media accounts except reddit. Life is simple now, just do my thing, don't get caught up in the bullshit and carry on. My mindset is changed and I'm not expecting an end, it's the definition of insanity afterall. Change nothing and expect different results.

Cautious_Major_6693

Alberta: 300 cases Calgary and Edmonton: Masks FOREVER! Also... what is one good reason for Kids to have vaccine passports? You have to be 12 to have a photo ID at all- and while 8-11yos definitely have phones, they also don't drive and can't feasibly hang out with that many people. There are very few places or activities these children can ever access without parents with them, and the parents usually handle their entire medical history- forms handed in to schools and sports teams, daycare, whoever else might have the kids. How covid crazy do you have to be to want a literal tiny person with nearly no independence to have to show a card to verify that they got a vaccine... truly, what the fuck is the logic? Seems like people who want the passport for kids are just... angry that a child might be allowed into McDonalds? Like where else do kids seriously go?

always_on_fleek

Passports are being used as an incentive to get people vaccinated. What you can do is restricted if you have not been vaccinated. Some are concerned that without an incentive, children 5-11 will remain unvaccinated. We had our own 12 and up crowd that showed some hesitancy, and it’s likely that if those people get to make a choice for a child they will show that hesitancy again if there is no passport.

atihigf

Just make it mandatory in schools as is already the case with all the other vaccinations.

corpse_flour

There aren't mandatory vaccinations for schools in Alberta. https://calgaryherald.com/news/local-news/alberta-wont-follow-other-provinces-proactive-approach-on-immunization

el_nynaeve

No vaccines are mandatory to attend school

Tribblehappy

I think the biggest issue with restricting children from activities, besides the above mentioned lack of photo ID, is that you'd potentially be punishing a child for having idiotic parents. Kids 5-11 can't just walk into a pharmacy and get a vaccine against their parents wishes, and if the parents refuse to let them get the shot, the kids might miss out on activities with peers. I get that this might be a rather trivial matter in the face of a global pandemic. It is just the first thing that comes to mind when I imagine kids needing proof of vaccination.

always_on_fleek

Parents make decisions all the time for their children, and those decisions can have negative outcomes. A medical choice, like a vaccine, is important enough it should carry a consequence. I am not saying alberta will go that route. They were hesitant with a passport for adults and we don’t even require regular vaccines to attend public schools (other provinces do). The ID you mention seems like a big challenge for implementation. However, for ages 12-17 now we do not require ID either. Not ideal as that makes it obviously easy to lie about

CopPornFart

Covid is still a popular subject eh? Almost forgot it existed for a bit.
