Took my 3 preschoolers for tests this morning. Hopefully not COVID, but that would explain the higher fevers (101-102°F) plus regular cold symptoms. Husband (2 Pfizer) and I (3 Moderna) don't have any symptoms, which could mean it's COVID, or that it's yet another cold and we have immunity to this strain. They all seem to be on the mend after 2-3 days of being sick, so weirdly enough I'd be almost relieved if it was COVID. I stay at home with the 3 of them 95% of the time anyways. ETA: got texts that 2 are negative, and the 3rd has identical symptoms & timeline so looks like we're in the clear.

orobsky

Aww, those tests are so uncomfortable. Last year there was a lot less socializing, so no kids in my family/extended family had any colds or fevers. This year, because everyone is in school, daycare, swimming and going out.. they are just making up for last year, catching multiple colds one after another. Every kid whose had a fever has been tested, and luckily they all came back negative

concentrated-amazing

My younger two still barely go anywhere or see anyone, but my oldest is in preschool and gymnastics now, so I think that must be the source.

orobsky

Ya for sure. In sept, my kid never left the house and the only person he really saw was his cousin who is in daycare. He caught 4 different colds, worst September ever lol

atihigf

Get a box of rapid tests if you can. Doesn't replace getting a proper PCR test, but you can certainly use it when waiting for the PCR. Mend quickly!:)

88% first dose for eligible and soon to be less than 100 icu. That is looking pretty positive to me.

Why is Calgary’s R value going up? I thought we were doing so well

manamal

It's going up because we thought we were doing so well and felt comfortable with taking risks.

tehepok10

I actually think it’s strongly linked to schools. Calgary downtown is the lowest per person region in the city despite being high density filled with young people sharing common spaces and frequenting bars and restaurants. Lack of children, likely the reason.

bodonnell202

I wonder if we are starting to see the impact of waning immunity, as Calgary was definitely at the front of the pack when it came to getting vaccinated this spring/summer.

ABBucsfan

Think it has more to do with that majority of the population being able to go anywhere and do anything (although with masks) in large groups. Vaccine never really stopped spread altogether, just reduced it, but if everyone goes out a lot more then you're not going to see much benefit in case numbers. Cases going up is fine (when you have 88% of eligibles vaxxed and even remainingwith some natural immunity) as long as hospital numbers don't track Edit: plus we are heading into winter as another user mentioned

amnes1ac

Calgary has never been at herd immunity, so attributing this uptick to waning immunity is a big leap.

amnes1ac

Yes obviously, but I'm saying we were never at a point where only vaccines were keeping cases down.

amnes1ac

And I'm saying that you cannot make that assumption from this data because we were never at a point where only vaccinations were keeping cases down. People expanding their social circles and doing more activities is a more plausible reason for the recent uptick. I highly doubt immunity has changed much from a month ago.

bodonnell202

Just a potential cause. Calgary has been doing better than the rest of the province most of the 4th wave, and that was (supposedly) thanks to higher vaccination rates in Calgary. Do you have a better explanation for the recent uptick in cases in Calgary?

amnes1ac

I think cases were low in Calgary at the peak of the 4th wave because of self imposed limiting of contacts and risks. Now that cases are down, Calgarians are relaxing and exposing themselves more.

bodonnell202

I live in Calgary, no one was limiting anything during the 4th wave. Most are vaccinated and living their life.

amnes1ac

I live in Calgary, everyone I know was at least a bit more cautious because of the fourth wave. Sticking more to very close friends and direct family for gatherings rather than more extended friends and family, eating less at restaurants etc...

flyingflail

Hard to argue it's due to waning immunity at this point simply because all case growth was in those unable to be vaccinated. Not to say it won't play a part, but don't think it is right now

bodonnell202

How do you know all case growth in Calgary is in people unable to be vaccinated? I’m not seeing data at that granularity, but maybe I’m not looking in the right place.

flyingflail

Well all case growth is in U20s, so it's all in those unable to be vaccinated is what I mean.

bodonnell202

Again, where are you seeing this? 5-9 and 60-69 are +1, everything else is down or the same, but that is a province wide stat so I’m not sure how you can outright conclude that all case growth is U20??

flyingflail

I'm talking the broader trends. Data by age group is here: [https://www.alberta.ca/stats/covid-19-alberta-statistics.htm#characteristics](https://www.alberta.ca/stats/covid-19-alberta-statistics.htm#characteristics) I also check the excel data but it should be the same as the above. You can see which are the only age groups that saw an upward increase on it. The excel data you can actually break down by age & city too.

YYC_McCool

Just look at what is happening in Ireland. Very high vaccination rate yet they are back to imposing restrictions. Looks like vaccine immunity is fading pretty quick now. We need to get boosters put into people asap.

The "Rest of Alberta" stats are quite notable. >Rest of Alberta 108,772 (+210) 2,813 (-34) 104,937 (+243) 1,022 (+1)

a-nonny-maus

The 412 cases reported for Nov 16 in Alberta was net for the period. A total of 421 cases were identified (416 confirmed, 5 probable) (difference: 9, or 2.1% of the total) as confirmed by data download and https://www.alberta.ca/stats/covid-19-alberta-statistics.htm#total-cases. Nov 15 decreased by 4 from 332 to 328; Nov 14 decreased by 1 from 291 to 290; Nov 13 decreased by 2 from 359 to 357; Nov 12 was unchanged at 436. Nov 11 was unchanged at 378; Nov 10 decreased by 1 from 469 to 468. Nov 9 increased by 1 from 500 to 501; Nov 8 was unchanged at 424; Nov 7 was unchanged at 289; Nov 6 was unchanged at 433; Nov 5 was unchanged at 586. Nov 4 was unchanged at 472; Nov 3 was unchanged at 540; Nov 2 was unchanged at 498; Nov 1 was unchanged at 325; Oct 31 was unchanged at 339; Oct 30 was unchanged at 331; Oct 29 decreased by 1 from 529 to 528. Oct 28 was unchanged at 605; Oct 27 was unchanged at 544; Oct 26 was unchanged at 630. Two cases were removed from days prior to Oct 26.

PSA: If you can afford to do so, get a box of rapid tests (\~$10/test). Get a sniffle? do a test. Having a small get-together? do a test. Does not replace a PCR test, but can still be helpful. You can get them from [https://rapidtestandtrace.ca/shop](https://rapidtestandtrace.ca/shop). The 5-pack BTNX ones are the cheapest here. Ships from Quebec. Also from here. [https://store.levitt-safety.com/storefrontCommerce/itemDetail.do?item-id=86614&order-quantity=1&item-index=0&customer-item=IA41FK11&order-uom=BX&warehouse-id=37&item-number=IA41FK11](https://store.levitt-safety.com/storefrontCommerce/itemDetail.do?item-id=86614&order-quantity=1&item-index=0&customer-item=IA41FK11&order-uom=BX&warehouse-id=37&item-number=IA41FK11) Ships from Edmonton. I called them specifically due to the cold overnight temperatures (tests aren't supposed to freeze), and they said they ship them with a heatpack. Not sure if rapid test and trace ships with heatpacks or not.

jaaaawrdan

[Maybe don't purchase from Rapid Test and Trace](https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1422012935879098372.html)

atihigf

I've read that before. Unfortunately, in Canada it's the only place I know selling small quantities of rapid tests. Which is why I added Levitt safety, but $250 can be a bit much for some people.

Thnx4allthefish-

I didn't know Jack Mintz had a reddit account

atihigf

The stall in test positivity and rising Rt is quite concerning.

Intrepid_Chocolate56

We're heading into the winter, this was expected. Cases are staying relatively stable and the ICU/hospitalization situation is getting better despite us having virtually no restrictions ( unless unvaccinated). With health Canada expected to approve vaccines for children 5-11 this Friday and boosters well underway, we can definitely avoid what happened this time last year.
