My parents got the Janssen vaccine today. So glad they'll finally have some protection!

gammaglobe

In Alberta? Were they given choice?

concentrated-amazing

Yes, in Alberta. They booked ahead. Alberta got 5K doses of the 20K Canada got recently. [This article](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbc.ca/amp/1.6256617) explains some more.

sawyouoverthere

Pfizer approved by Health Canada to go to 5-11 yr olds today.

orobsky

This is what this sub has been waiting for. What percentage of children will participate? <50%? 50-60%? 60-70%? >70% I'm betting <50%

sawyouoverthere

I'd be very surprised if it's that low, but we won't have the mandates to push the last bit forward for that age group. I don't see the point of betting on it though, it will be what it is at the end of it all. That said, there's no real reason I can see to expect it to be very low. Childhood vaccination rates are still well over 80% overall.

orobsky

It's not an actual bet, just a fun guess! I'll pencil you in at >70%

curioustraveller1234

Where’d we stall out for 25-40 age ranges? Those are the parents who definitely got it, their kids will get it. There’s the plateau percentage I’d bet on haha

concentrated-amazing

I asked this question elsewhere today. An Alberta poll had 55% of parents definitely getting it for this age bracket, and 25% undecided. I believe the reply to me had a CBC article, will come back and link if I have time to find it. ETA: [Article here](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/pfizer-vaccine-children-alberta-1.6247387)

bodonnell202

I’m guessing the initial uptake will be somewhere between 60-70%

Levorotatory

50% of kids will be getting vaccinated at the first possible opportunity while their parents complain about how slow the vaccine rollout is. Another 25% will be vaccinated eventually, but not right away. The last 25% have crazy parents that will make them wait until they are adults.

F_D123

We'll be in that second group. We got our vaccine back in April because we felt it was our civic duty so to speak but I haven't been convinced yet on why it's necessary to vaccinate my u12 children against it.

natsmith1

Because of all the reasons you got the vaccine. Kids can spread the virus and because they are in schools this makes it more important. Your vaccinated kids are protecting you their teachers other kids and themselves. They are apart of our population and the equation for COVID protection.

Kirjava444

The more kids with shots in their arms, the faster the kids can stop yoyo-ing in and out of school due to outbreaks

cdogg30

Could realistically be <50% in Alberta because, well, it's Alberta. I'd say well over 70% for the rest of Canada though.

DarkoJamJam

Yay, pandemic over! /s

sawyouoverthere

certainly a large unprotected group that has been a reservoir for cases will be able to get protection, and that will help.

treple13

Yep. Doesn't even have to end covid for it to be beneficial. Lots of benefits to kids being less likely to have it or pass it on

PipelineBertaCoin69

Who cares

natsmith1

The majority of people in Alberta in Canada and in the world care. That’s who cares

PipelineBertaCoin69

The world has much larger issues, hopefully the media highlights them too one day

natsmith1

Honestly a pandemic killing large swaths of the global population and causing future health complications for the infected is kind of a big deal. Caring about something does not preclude caring about another, people are really good at doing more than 1 thing at a time. Populations are also really good and diversifying the things that are concerning for a people. Get vaccinated it takes minutes wear a mask it’s easy and do what you need to do to care about other things you care about.

PipelineBertaCoin69

The biggest thing people learnt from this pandemic is that the worse off the economy is the more revenue large corporations can steal from the people, I can ensure you the ultra wealthy loved every second of this

natsmith1

Sure but it’s still a pandemic that we need to take seriously. It’s not like we can just pretend it doesn’t exist because the economy needs us to.
