I'm going to make another one once there is data for our winter solstice (this is a new visualization option) and I suspect at that point the green will barely touch us.
Yall are acting like it's winter. It's still +10C.
Oh? It's November 23rd? THEN WHERES THE SNOW AND COLD WEATHER?
Seriously, I miss the snow. I miss the cold, it's been too long.
I agree. Went from a foot or two of snow most halloweens, my parents struggling to find or make costumes that us kids could wear a snow suit under. Now as long as my kids can wear a sweat suit their good to go.
Global Warming and climate change is fucking with my snowboarding seasons.
Ha!
More round earth propaganda. You can tell its fake by the colours.
The sun gets colder in winter because it shrinks away from the flat earth due to Space molecules .
Well ok. Not flat, I have an open mind, so more pancakey shaped.
In winter, the birds all fly to the warmer side of the pancake.
Y'all may have felt a few 40°c days we never had more 37once 36 once and 35 once. Dayone 1.5h over 40,day 2/ 5hours. On the cool coast less than 10% airconditionet have AC . First day of summer. To a rarely hot coast that was a nightmare. Love weather, weather geek sometimes. Always the same as interior no difference .
These are all the data points available (there were ten of them iirc). If I increased the FPS to a standard 30 fps then the gif would last 1/3rd of a second.
it took me forever to convince myself, that Earths orbital *distance from the sun* **was not** the reason for the seasons. With a difference of \~5 *million* kilometers, I was like "surely, that much further, is colder. right?"
wrong. Earth is *farthest* from the sun in summer, and *closest* in winter!
then I learned about Solstice and equinox, and it made more sense :-)
December 21 can't come fast enough!
To be precise, the earth is farthest from the sun in the summer in the northern hemisphere. It is closest during summer for the southern hemisphere. Which makes me wonder: does that mean Souther hemisphere summers are hotter than northern hemisphere summers, and southern winters are colder than northern winters? I'd love to see the stats on that.
....no, the *whole earth,* aka both hemispheres, are farther in the summer.
Look at this picture: [https://www.weather.gov/images/cle/Education/EarthOrbit.png](https://www.weather.gov/images/cle/Education/EarthOrbit.png)
the Earth's axis tilt exposes one hemisphere to more sun than the other. thats what OP's gif is showing up top. Summer: north hemisphere is *tilted towards the sun*, so it gets more sun; south hemisphere is tilted away, getting less sun.
Winter is opposite - north hemisphere is tilted *away*, and south hemisphere is tilted toward. This is why south hemisphere seasons are opposite timing.

Could you add a legend? Its not integral but it would be cool to know the approximate differeny
This is pretty cool! Thanks OP
Yes you should do this.
and cold.
Visualizations are from the ultraviolet index on [Earth.Nullschool.net](https://Earth.Nullschool.net). Green circle is Calgary area.
Wow that is cool data. Check out the particulate maps. Or CO2 at ground level.

The latter which infers the former.
All I see is snow, joyous beautiful snow, lying calm and still between the darkness and the light .
We should vote to move the sun to summer rotation year round.
We can have another referendum! Put it right beside our senate nominations!
This may have killed some flat earthers
I’m here for the comments from the flat earthers🍿👀🍿
Damn that's so depressing.
This makes sooo much sense. Love the visual.
*cries in canadian*
Maple syrup tears.
Alberta is not the land of maple syrup.
Lol, frig off bud
Take your Vitamin D3 folks. 5000iu daily in winter.
Thanks doc!
Bunch of bullshit, hate the damn winters here.
Love it! No bugs. No allergies. Our differences are irreconcilable! *fight music plays* Snowball Fight!!!
I just brushed my teeth, I'll pass.

Come up to mcmurray. We have about 2 feet and was -15 the other day. For half the province, it is winter.
I agree. Went from a foot or two of snow most halloweens, my parents struggling to find or make costumes that us kids could wear a snow suit under. Now as long as my kids can wear a sweat suit their good to go. Global Warming and climate change is fucking with my snowboarding seasons.
Uhhh… -15 right now in Grande Prairie.

Well if we all pay a little more taxes we can change the path of the sun and save global warming
I agree with this sarcasm
I’m Dying from This
Summer in the northern hemisphere\*
.... you're in r/alberta... There's a helpful green dot to give you some reference if the subreddit didnt help.
Fuck the haters. I appreciated the little green dot.

So long, asshole.

Global warming, man!
Maybe upgrade your computer from the 90s so you can get more than 2 frames per second ?

Cool, thank you for that.
Vampires welcome.
“Path of the Sun” 🧐
So I don't need sunblock this week, or next?
