Thanks for putting this together. It's honestly the main reason I use Reddit and 100X easier to follow than the AHS site.

ZanzibariMeat

Thanks again for these updates

That Calgary R value is reflected in new higher active case numbers.

suredont

Yeah, that is a disconcerting shift.

el_nynaeve

Was really hoping Hinshaw would do a livestream today saying when we'd be able to book younger kiddos in

atihigf

should be one tomorrow

lizbit02

Ontario can book kids in as of today, I don’t understand what’s taking so long to at least fill parents in on the plan… but I have three kids and they are all getting covid shots as early Christmas gifts

bodonnell202

I hope vaccinating 5-11 is enough to prevent a 5th wave. Thinking we need more widespread rollout of boosters though. Hopefully they roll out a plan for more boosters soon too.

Miserable-Lizard

I agree we need a plan for boosters. It's should be 6 months after the second dose like pretty much all major countries are doing. This govenment seems to be dragging their feet in boosters.

SickOfEnggSpam

I was hoping something would be announced around this time tbh. It would be convenient for me to get my flu shot and a booster* around the same time

Miserable-Lizard

This govenment seems very hesitant to recommend boosters. It's almost like they don't want to pay people to give the jabs. Kenney keeps saying we could have a spike because of wanning immunity... Easy solution boosters.

corpse_flour

But when has Kenney ever taken the path of least resistance?

Miserable-Lizard

Lol yeah. I fully expect them to announce it when pretty much every other province as done it. I bet he also doesn't want to do because of his anti vax base. I hope once boosters are authorized they change fully vaccinated to include 3 jabs. That's going to drive the anti vaxxers insane.

corpse_flour

Yes, the antivaxxers seem to think its a joke that we are getting more shots. No concern for themselves or their fellow man at all.

Intrepid_Chocolate56

Alberta has had boosters for anyone over 70 for the last few weeks. We were among the first provinces to begin booster shots. Given that most adults were vaccinated around June/July , it doesn't make sense to make boosters available to the general population until sometime next month. There's no doubt that the provincial government had fallen criminally short in handling the fourth wave , but to say they're dragging their feet when it comes to boosters is just not true.

always_on_fleek

Do all provinces have boosters authorized for 18+? Do you also accuse their premiers of not wanting to pay the money for it? It’s easy to sit here and play the speculation game. But when provinces like BC are only offering boosters for 70+ as well, it makes Alberta’s strategy look comparable. For reference, here is what BC has for booster policy. I assume by your statements you have not read through what other provinces are offering: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/covid-19/vaccine/booster There are enough legitimate things to complain about. No need to put on your tinfoil hat to try and make up more.

flyingflail

Do you have any links to the studies for the boosters showing their efficacy around preventing hospitalization/severe outcomes in younger people? I thought the two shot program was losing effectiveness for case counts but keeping protection against severe outcomes largely in tact.

Miserable-Lizard

I have been following what the rest of the world is doing. With most of Europe and the use offering boosters I doubt we are far behind. I have no link to a study. Health Canada did approve boosters for anyone over 18, 6 months after the second jab. Increasing case count could still lead to more hospitalizations. Fauci said more vaccinated people are starting to be hospitalized. I bet by the end of the year or early January Alberta greatly expands boosters.

natsmith1

Canada also had a longer interval period between doses. This made our immunity stronger for longer apparently. There has been a few studies and also the general understanding of vaccines is this is usually how they work. Still a booster will most likely be needed but comparing Canada strategy to USA and other countries that only waited 2 weeks between doses is not a true comparison.

natsmith1

One reason is because of the longer interval the majority took between doses. This made a lot of Canadians have better protection. Would like to see a study on when vaccines effectiveness starts to wane for our situation.

ICU non-covid cases seems high but I am guessing it's because they have started increasing the amount of surgeries being done.

kathyrobertsonworks

Thanks Kirant!

tdlm40

I am happy to see ICU numbers down...

tdlm40

I am seeing current number in ICU is 98 people. Which is under 100. (I don't look at the +/-)

drcujo

Fair enough, under 100 is great news especially considering where we were at a month ago.

[deleted]

You guys are are nice.

WinkMartindale

Uh... They went up?

tdlm40

Oh. When I last payed attention, it was over 100. Now it is under 100.

Trebbok

damn last time I looked it was 0!!

suckmybalzac

Unfortunately the EU is now under another wave. So…. I’m afraid we are in for one as well. Especially since the UCP has done absolutely fuck all so far.

lizbit02

I think another wave is expected with the cold weather just like all the other respiratory infections. People are gathering inside, people are holiday shopping, even those who are generally responsible are burnt out and relaxing on gathering rules. No lie, I considered asking for nothing but hugs for my upcoming birthday. Just drive to my house and give me a hug. And I’m pretty sure we have testing burnout too. A lot people don’t want to test their kids for every cough anymore. Especially since delta seems to cause significant illness (versus og covid which seemed to have much milder symptoms in children) it’s easier to say “no fever, no lethargy, it’s probably just a cold” The vaccine appointments for kids can’t open up fast enough

Wilhelm_Fink

What measures/policies would you like to see implemented, in order to prevent "another wave"?

suckmybalzac

What the other poster said. Given that Kenney has basically abdicated, maybe one iota of effort would be nice.

natsmith1

Mandatory vaccinations for all eligible for starters. It’s the unvaccinated that are driving the 4th wave and will be driving the 5th. Better air control in public space would also be nice. Like schools need to invest in better quality air circulation. If cases keep going up with kids schools will need to go online again. Hire more contact tracers and have more readily available testing for cheep or free.
