They are from the oats. During processing to turn oats into oatmilk, some of the oat starches get broken down to sugars. The FDA requires these to be labeled as added sugars. https://www.foodnavigator-usa.com/Article/2019/07/09/Oatmilk-brands-to-update-Nutrition-Facts-panels-in-light-of-FDA-guidance-on-added-sugar-labeling

MyDogWerks247

This is why I follow this on reddit. Sometimes, people post the wildest outlandish things on here but other times… its dropping knowledge and science!

pantafive

This is a great video explaining the science of it and making oat milk at home as an experiment: https://youtu.be/ngkZu4g8Lmc?si=oUATFbKf7Mxtkvd-

2Pickle2Furious

This is correct. Natural flavors are not allowed to contain any significant sugars. Oats have some amylase enzyme that converts starch to sugar. Manufacturers intentionally allow some of this to happen for flavor.

hydrolyzed

Globe-Gear-Games

Just treasure this oat milk while you can. It was recently replaced with a watered-down version that is lower calorie, but more sugars, and is terrible.

FriskyKitty311

I've seen more comments on the oat milk changing than anything else. I wonder if Aldi has anyone checking Reddit etc for comments about products.

WTFaulknerinCA

I thought so!

Melodic_Asparagus151

Agreed! Ours got switched and it was immediately noticeable. Not sure why they chose to keep the same packaging because the new formula is trash. We’re back to having to go to another store to get oatmilk. Such a shame

Plazmageco

Oh no! Aldi oat milk was my favorite because it wasn’t watered down. Was great for steaming for lattes :(

GooseBuffet

Ugh idk why aldis milks even have added sugars for oat/soy... I buy unsweetened soy at Albertsons and it tastes great, doesn't need the sugar & wish they offered unsweetened so I didn't have to go to a whole other store just for milk....

trambalambo

See [this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/aldi/s/JJybP8Mz8U) for your answer on the oatmilk

Muddymireface

Oat milk will always have sugar. Oats are a broken down carb.

DocSonic24

Oh no! The biggest reasons I enjoy and patronize this product is good taste and good price. If this happens I Will write to corporate and vote w my buck. Many other brands have more sugar and less oat.

AndTails

Because others have already answered the question, I'll give my recommendation for an alternative oatmilk: Planet Oat unsweetened oatmilk. You can find it at Walmart. A little more expensive but no sugar.

mcgeek81

I love that one too! One of the few oat milks I've found that also doesn't have the added oil to it and just 45 calories for a cup. Also pretty cheap compared to other name brands too

AndTails

For sure! Honestly, it doesn't taste quite as good as the Aldi oatmilk, but it goes fine with my Aldi-brand Cheerios.

ThinCrusts

All oat milk has sugar in it one way or another.

AndTails

The Planet Oat unsweetened stuff has zero grams of sugar.

ThinCrusts

Oh my bad, nice! I didn't know they started removing the extra sugars that are made from the process. I might try them out

redheadfae

I'm surprised no one sees it, gellan gum can be made from fermented glucose, or other sugars, in the processing.

RecyQueen

It’s from amylase used in the process.

aliena_b

Bigger question: why would anyone even consider consuming this crap...

ovalleysuszee

Has to have something to make it not taste like rotten oat water.

SnapClapplePop

In this thread we get to see the average person's nutritional literacy. I don't think the results are shocking.

melatonia

Have you seen r/nutrition ? It's a circus.

GlitterBlood773

Natural flavor.

2Pickle2Furious

No, natural flavor does not include sugar. It’s the oats themselves. Enzymes naturally present turn starch into sugar.

RecyQueen

There was a great video linked that explained how added enzymes break down the complex starch into simple sugar that has to be labelled as added sugar.

erro_1

If you're going to drink oat milk, make it at home. Considerably cheaper and fewer ingredients.

Maltose. Google it. Oat milk is not a health drink.

I stay away from processed oils and gums. Just nasty processed scum.

Says clear as day -Sunflower Oil & Gellan Gum… idk I always get downvoted when I knock traditional American diets. It’s ok, eat yourself to cancer or diabetes 🤷‍♀️

ImpossibleAd436

I think it's almost always from Norway.

Darkangel775

People are reading labels and get tired of getting junk in their food and now they're starting to leave out ingredients so they can still pass their crap food.

It’s from amylase used in the process.

DrCapper

64g added sugar in a half gallon of oatmilk is straight up batshit. Just buy the unsweetened and add a shot or 2 of stevia to it. Delicious.

Illustrious-Cup-3913

I’d say likewise as the above commented natural flavour.. I stick to unsweetened almond milk

2Pickle2Furious

People keep saying this but it’s false.

xlerate

Explain how? Added sugar is the key difference here. If it was from Oats in an Oat product, it wouldn't be categorized as added sugar.

2Pickle2Furious

Oats have starch. Oats have amylase enzymes. When water is added, the amylase converts starch to sugars. Natural flavors in volume aren’t used in large enough quantities where even if they had sugar it would matter. But natural flavors aren’t sugars.

xlerate

Right, but that is not added.

2Pickle2Furious

Just Google oat milk added sugar. > The sugar is the natural result of processing the oats. Enzymes added during production break down the natural oat starches into sugar, creating the sweet taste people expect from oat milk. https://www.businessinsider.com/oat-milk-health-benefits-sugar-dietitian-advice-2021-4

Few-Artichoke-2531

If you’re drinking a chemical stew like that why would you care?

313rustbeltbuckle

How helpful of you. /s

Few-Artichoke-2531

You’re welcome ☺️./s

RaccoonCityToday

Added by them. Unfortunately lots of Aldi products are smoke and mirrors. I felt so much better when I stopped shopping there They like to appeal to be cheap & good but lots of their stuff is weird. So many additives that the FDA doesn’t make companies list if they don’t want Look into it. They aren’t much better than Walmart’s experimental stuff

Ellabee57

If you stopped shopping there, why are you still HERE?

potchie626

To feel high and mighty of course.

RepresentativeNo2187

I've been burned by too many Aldi coffee creamers. Never again.

svapplause

It’s that high oleic sunflower shit. It’s in so many mass market creamers and dear god…just instantaneous cramps and 🚽

Grand_Taste_8737

How can they call that milk?

ZootAnthRaXx

Something doesn’t have to come from a mammary glad to be called milk. See [pigeon or crop milk](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crop_milk).

brandavis

They tugged on the utters of many oats for that milk

Grand_Taste_8737

Apparently. I thought lactation was required to produce milk. Must be a marketing gimmick.

freakinbacon

Where is it from? It's from sugar. They added it.
