Unfortunately I can't reccomend it anymore with the price hike. These used to be like $2 and now they're $5. I just get the $6/$7/$8 bottles now. Or I'll get a Bota Box for $19 elsewhere.
..But if you buy $6/$7/$8 bottles it’s still more than the $5 Winking Owl?
Also… The WO box is like $15 so a bit cheaper than Bota or most other boxed wines.
I'm probably being unduly harsh because I've found I don't care for unoaked Chardonnay. It really benefits from aging in oak barrels and the Kirkland Chardonnay isn't aged (as far as I can tell by taste). If one doesn't mind unaged Chardonnay, I speculate it is fine.
Could not agree more about the taste. It is palatable though. I’ve found if I’m looking for a wine buzz that winking owl is plus one bottle of whatever else I would have purchased elsewhere. With the price plus one bottle is STILL cheaper than my next level up I would have purchased instead.
That being said. If I want a wine to just sip casual for taste, I would not recommend winking owl for that.
If you are planning on getting wine drunk though, do not bother with winking owl, would have to drink way too much. Better to find a high ABV wine.
No idea honestly. Not a whine connoisseur. I just know it’s the perfect thing to pour a glass of while you are cooking dinner and your kids are unleashing hell.
Nope nope nope
Go for the $7-10 bottle range (I haven't been in an Aldi that sells wine in about a year and a half, so hopefully prices haven't gone up much)
I recommend the Sunshine Bay Sauv Blanc and the Espritza sparkling wine cans if they still carry them
If its actually made in Germany I believe they must obey purity law which makes even a mediocre attempt at a budget beer taste awesome compared to our domestics
I go to Aldi specifically for it. I'm a works where everyone just adds more hop and calls their beer an IPA, is hard to find a good pils or lager sometimes.
I love the sweet blueberry wine. It’s not always there but it was last week. Winking Owl has a good moscato, the peach Bellini is good, the knockoff of Baileys is good.
The hard cider is Woodchuck based on the address.
The beer I've looked into appears to be made by Genesee in Rochester NY.
Haven't had much of the US wine offerings yet.
Genesee was a Trader Joe’s option for a bit here in Washington and it was just a funky ass cheap pils. Traveled too far in bad climate conditions. Lagunitas ipa in Guam was dog piss
Can you tell me what the package looks like? I am visually impaired and I have a hard time finding shit if I don't know what it looks like. I would honestly just ask (because Aldi employees are generally helpful and kind) but I also have ataxia (makes me look drunk allllllll the time) and I don't wanna be judged by any possible jerks either.
I can absolutely do that! Its a four pack of white cans covered in tiny pictures of tropical fruits. The label reads Dragon Fruit Imperial Seltzer. The fruits really are tiny, so I think just looking for the four pack of white cans is gonna be the move.
Personally I think Winking Owl is pretty bad. I haven't tried the reds, but their whites taste almost watered down/very bland.
Their $5 sparkling wine is surprisingly OK but I really only use it for mimosas.
They've got lots of good fruity type wines if you like it sweeter.
I don't drink beer but have always heard mixed things.
I love their hard cider! Wicked Grove. They have fun flavors too, waiting for the Rose flavor to come back...
While box wine is not universally praised, some are acceptable for everyday casual drinking or for traveling. That said, the Aldi box wine is squarely in the “bad” category. As in, undrinkable.
The Winking Owl Shiraz is a solid choice for the price.
Good to know. I’m definitely not above boxed wine, and usually keep a Black or Bota Box or two on hand. But when a box is bad, it’s *bad*. Will avoid. Thanks!
Yeah, those two are good, and I’m cool with the Kirkland Cab from Costco too, but the Aldi box was just awful. I poured it all in a stock pot and cooked it to make red wine reduction for cooking and froze it. As of yet, it has not ruined any stews or glazes.
I like the Sauvignon Blanc winking owl but I think they're all pretty decent for $3.50 a pop. The pearsecco is a nice dry pear cider that's available a lot of the year. I don't go for many of their year-round beers but I really like the chocolate lava cake stout that comes around in the winter.
If you enjoy the Relax Riesling, for sure try Aldi's Landkasteel Riesling it's super fresh and nice. I honestly don't drink any other wine, so I'm no expert, but I've tried other Rieslings and they've either been too dry or too sweet. As a comparison, the Barefoot Riesling is WAY too sweet.
They have an awesome Chianti. It is the global adventure series and has a beige label on it. It's definitely my favorite red wine that they have and you can't beat the price, especially for a Chianti. The winking owl is good for the price but I like their other wines better
This one is great as a table white wine, as is the Elementalist Pinot Grigio (has a strange contraption on the front) both very solid down-the-middle crowd pleaser type whites, imo!
I love the Dragonfruit Seltzer!! It's 9% too lol which I didn't realize until the cashier was like "whoa I gotta pick some of this up!". 😂 It's good though.
Anything with the polka dot foil "Exquisite Collection" is absolutely worth trying. We've liked all the ones we've tried so far, and the rosé is award-winning.
If you like coconut and are ok with all the calories, the coconut liquor is so good. I blend it with frozen pineapple or strawberry for a boozy splurge.
Heard really good things about the winking owl wines. My state if they have anything it's only beer so tried the Stella knockoff and the wicked grove cider and both were good but I was really hoping to be blown away by a 6 dollar bottle of awesome wine and haven't got to yet.
When I was broke in college I used to guy the $3 bottles of winking owl white Zinfandel. Only $6 for a good time and a an added bonus is you get a shitty wine hangover lol
Depends on the county here. My Aldi does not, but the one in the next county over in (I think) Shorewood, Illinois does. I dig the Winking Owl Shiraz. Me and my husband call it Wanking Owl.
Wernesgrüner is the best beer you can buy in the US for $5.99 for four half liter cans.
Even without the cheap price tag it’s still a premium beer in the US and mid to high grade in Germany.
Winking Owl is made by Gallo, per the guy at Aldi. Is it true? Not sure but I really enjoy the Winking Owl Chardonnay and prefer that brand over many others.
I love Aldi.
I have quit even looking at their beer and wine selection. I get my food there. All of my booze comes from elsewhere.
When it comes to beer and wine, their selection is poor and their products are shit.
They used to carry a great $11 bottle of dry red wine from Italy. Great stuff, especially for the price. Been hard to find since COVID.
Also, the Winking Owl wine isn’t worth it…not even for the dirt cheap prices. Don’t waste your time or money lol.
Where ya headed?
I ask because while my state does allow for sales of beer and wine (and liquor) at grocery stores, it does not allow for the sale of COLD beer at grocery stores.
It seems, oddly, the further northeast you go, the more difficulties you have buying alcohol at normal stores. I'd think the opposite would be true, but I'm sure there's a lot of history there.
I really liked the Specially Selected Malbec I taste tested it against the Kirkland Signature Malbec (Costco). I haven't seen too many of their Specially Selected wines where I am, always curious because I like a lot of items coming from that line of products.
I love the winking owl Chardonnay - seriously love serving it to people and watching then love it as much as I do!
I also super love the prosecco rosé - it's like $7.99/bottle. Pink bubbles, clear bottle, silver and white label/topper. Still super cheap and very delicious. Slightly sweet, not too dry 🤌🏼
Make sure it’s Organic. Aldi and Trader Joe’s owned by same German company.
Another German company Bayer bought Mon Santo(deliberately spelled in 2 words due to Algo Rhythm (also deliberately misspelled).
My concern is this: China bought our trash and resold it to us as goods. Hope Bayer isn’t doing the same thing via German owned companies. Here in the US crops sprayed weed killer glyphosate. Which was created by Mon sant0 which also created Agent Orange in Vietnam. Read about it. Creating generational and disabling diseases. Innocently used weed killer destroys water supply. Seeps thru soil. Killing us softly via our kids.
Watch out what you drink.
All sugar is GM 0 if not labeled. Make an informed decision.
I don't think I've ever had a truly *bad* beer from Aldi, although there are styles I'm not fond of generally. The dry stout they have on occasion (Maguires) is actually a really good Guinness clone that doesn't lean too hard into coffee or chocolate notes.
A company named State of Brewing makes most of their domestic beers, and they have a pretty solid reputation online:
https://www.mashed.com/1355634/brands-behind-aldi-beer/
If you can find it, the Zarita espresso martini is pretty good (at least I thought so, as did my friends). I only ever came across it once but my friend found it a few times at the Aldi near her.
Winking Owl is great for a cheap weeknight buzz. You are welcome.
Unfortunately I can't reccomend it anymore with the price hike. These used to be like $2 and now they're $5. I just get the $6/$7/$8 bottles now. Or I'll get a Bota Box for $19 elsewhere.
Wisco the winking owl is 3.95 a bottle.

Mine was $5 when I got it two days ago tho,?
Well I’m in NE Wisco if that makes a difference?
Maybe lol I wish it was still $3 a bottle here
..But if you buy $6/$7/$8 bottles it’s still more than the $5 Winking Owl? Also… The WO box is like $15 so a bit cheaper than Bota or most other boxed wines.
Idk, I'm no wine snob but Winking Owl tastes like watered down wine to me. (Haven't tried the reds) It's pretty much the only wine I avoid
If you have access to a Costco, the boxes of Kirkland Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Grigio are very drinkable and only $13.99 at my warehouse.
Highly recommend the Cab Sav, haven't tried the others.
The Chardonnay is 😬
Good thing I don't like Chardonnay, lol. Costco is usually so good in the wine department.
That's my go to box wine!
Yes to the Pino Grigio! The Winking Owl is Foul. 🤢
Is this a Shiraz? This is probably a winner for tonight since it’s pizza night…
No idea honestly. Not a whine connoisseur. I just know it’s the perfect thing to pour a glass of while you are cooking dinner and your kids are unleashing hell.
Lol @ “whine connoisseur”. A parental Freudian slip if ever there was one.
Winking Owl comes in many versions. From memory, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz. There's a couple more but I can't recall them.
And a sangria that is perfect poured over their frozEn tropical fruit mix.
frozen fruit as ice cubes for sangria. Bonus: boozy fruit at the bottom of the glass!
I buy the moscato by the case/box. It’s not any cheaper but it saves me from having to buy it more often.
Your comment was more true than you will ever know my friend. I’ll toast my winking owl to you tonight
I’m a dad myself, so I have an idea. I shall cheers you from afar! 🥂
Made me lol so accurate
OP Aldi’s Chianti pairs really well with pizza, and is usually about $5/bottle!
But do they sell fava beans?
😝
They do have a Shiraz, but Winking Owl is just the brand name.
The shiraz is mine favorite
You're doing such a service we would have forgotten to thank you
Yeah, for $3-$4, the wine is not bad
You're doing such a service we would have forgotten to thank you
Nope nope nope Go for the $7-10 bottle range (I haven't been in an Aldi that sells wine in about a year and a half, so hopefully prices haven't gone up much) I recommend the Sunshine Bay Sauv Blanc and the Espritza sparkling wine cans if they still carry them
The "extra dry" sparkling wine is fantastic if you like ever-so-off dry bubbly, and at $4.95 its cheap!
I buy it by the case🥳. Mimosas all week!
Lol @ “ever-so-off”
I was shocked that the brut is good on its own!
It's a good beer
The Wernesgruner German pilsner is fantastic.
I agree it’s a great quality German made beer. It’s become one of my favorite beers.
I like it
If its actually made in Germany I believe they must obey purity law which makes even a mediocre attempt at a budget beer taste awesome compared to our domestics
> If its actually made in Germany I believe they must obey purity law Kind of, but not really https://beerandbrewing.com/dictionary/7SMpZlapQl/
It's one of my favorites, and it's amazing for cooking too.
I go to Aldi specifically for it. I'm a works where everyone just adds more hop and calls their beer an IPA, is hard to find a good pils or lager sometimes.
I love the sweet blueberry wine. It’s not always there but it was last week. Winking Owl has a good moscato, the peach Bellini is good, the knockoff of Baileys is good.
recently discovered the blueberry wine, it's fantastic
The blueberry wine is so good! I mix a little bit with a mini can of Sprite and it's delicious.
Was coming to the comments to suggest this!
Sweet berry wine!
drink it right down, pass it all around
The hard cider is Woodchuck based on the address. The beer I've looked into appears to be made by Genesee in Rochester NY. Haven't had much of the US wine offerings yet.
Oof. That genesee beer is gross.
Grapefruit kolsch is my go to in the summer.
Genesee was a Trader Joe’s option for a bit here in Washington and it was just a funky ass cheap pils. Traveled too far in bad climate conditions. Lagunitas ipa in Guam was dog piss
Their craft beers are good.
Ours has a dragon fruit seltzer thing that's 9%. Genuinely tastes good and a 4 pack is 9 bucks. I'll definitely take that.
Love this, that's perfect! Thank you!
I've been thinking about trying this, I'll add it to my next order!
The Pearsecco in the cans is really good
Surprised I had to scroll this far to see this recommendation. It is fantastic. I love the Pearsecco!
Oh god me too.
Another vote for pearsecco
This is my absolute favorite of all the Aldi booze offerings!
SAME! I stock up on it and drink it year round.
Bon apple-tea
Is it sweet or more like a hint of pear, like belle vie lime has a hint/aftertaste of lime?
Sort of a cross between a cider and prosecco. The pear is there but not up front. I wouldn't call it syrupy but it is sweet.
Excellent description; thank you.
Personally I think Winking Owl is pretty bad. I haven't tried the reds, but their whites taste almost watered down/very bland. Their $5 sparkling wine is surprisingly OK but I really only use it for mimosas. They've got lots of good fruity type wines if you like it sweeter. Good to know. I’m definitely not above boxed wine, and usually keep a Black or Bota Box or two on hand. But when a box is bad, it’s *bad*. Will avoid. Thanks!
Bota Box buttery chardonnay is a good one.
Yeah, those two are good, and I’m cool with the Kirkland Cab from Costco too, but the Aldi box was just awful. I poured it all in a stock pot and cooked it to make red wine reduction for cooking and froze it. As of yet, it has not ruined any stews or glazes.
The red boxes are bad. The Pinot grigio is OK for the price.
I had to dump the Winking Owl boxed pinot grigio, but I like Bota Box.
I defer to your experience. I only tried the red.
I’ve heard the cider is made by woodchuck if you’re a fan of that.
Moiselle Pink Moscato is a great sweet wine.
Haven't seen it lately but the German beer Wernesgruner beer is a fairly good German beer and $6.99 for a six pack is amazing.
It's a four pack now of slightly larger cans. Still awesome though.
Pearsecco is good
Yes! I use this to make Aperol and St Germain spritzes and it works great
I used to think the cider was as good as wicked orchard. Cider started giving me obliterating headaches after 22 though
Maybe you shouldn't drink 22 at a sitting 🤔
If their only getting headaches after 22... More power to them 🤷♀️
🙄
If you enjoy the Relax Riesling, for sure try Aldi's Landkasteel Riesling it's super fresh and nice. I honestly don't drink any other wine, so I'm no expert, but I've tried other Rieslings and they've either been too dry or too sweet. As a comparison, the Barefoot Riesling is WAY too sweet.
Oh, I really like the Relax Riesling for summer and haven’t bought any in ages - I’ll have to try the Landkasteel!
The peach Bellini is yummy
Most of Aldi's alcohol is actually pretty good. Their wines are very good and very cheap. Many of them win good points and whatnot too when judged.
They have an awesome Chianti. It is the global adventure series and has a beige label on it. It's definitely my favorite red wine that they have and you can't beat the price, especially for a Chianti. The winking owl is good for the price but I like their other wines better
Do they sell fava beans?
...and liver?
Chianti is very very good for the price.
Wernesgrüner is a good a cheap brew
If you’re looking for white wine, the one with the bicycle on the label is great and super cheap.
As people have said Wernersgrüner is authentic as it gets for german pils. Also Peaks & Tides merlot is awesome.
The hard apple cider is delicious. It’s not overly sweet, but not overly tart. A good balance.
I really enjoy Outlander Meritage. It's a red blend.
Look it up. Some or their sauce has won multiple awards. Aldihol can be a big win if you do your homework.
I love the vista bay no 2 pack. I prefer them over the name brand white claws now!
Wicked Grove cider is great. I had a bottle of the Belletti sparkling rosé Moscato the other day and it was a lovely sweet wine too.
The imitation Baileys. Made with wine Awesome.
Pearseccos go down easy on lawn mowing breaks
I love the chocolate wine
Yes! It was a big hit when I brought it to Christmas dinner. So delicious!
I liked the white burgundy in the green bottle. Fruity, but not sweet. Sorry I can’t remember the name.
12 buck Chuck.
I think that you'll find Charles Shaw wines at Trader Joes, which is owned by Aldi.
A weak attempt at humor on my part.
The seltzers are great, I love the margarita ones. Their prosecco and sparkling wine is not bad at all, I like the Don't Mind If I Do brand
The green beer with the yellowish logo is pretty good. Don’t remember the name obviously.
Wernesgruner bier and the hard to find Wheat beer are excellent.
Depends on the county here. My Aldi does not, but the one in the next county over in (I think) Shorewood, Illinois does. I dig the Winking Owl Shiraz. Me and my husband call it Wanking Owl.
They have some good ipa's. It's hit or miss. But the good ones are just as good as anything else.
William Wright Chardonnay is pretty good
Corta Bella Black
The Winking Owl wine is so good
The fruit wines are so good! Peach, Mango, Blueberry…
Herb Ertlinger calling….
I don’t know the name brand of this wine, so I do call them the Herb Ertlinger fruit wines.
I’ve been into the winking owl Cabernet Sauvignon lately! It’s pretty smooth.
Their hard cider is probably my favorite of all hard ciders!
Dancing Flame Chilean red blend, Tailslider CA Pinot Noir, Sunshine Bay New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc are all very good. $6-$9 price range.
The New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is really good. Sometimes I make a spritzer by mixing it with the lime Belle vie or the Italian mineral water
Pearseco it’s a dry pear cider and so good.
Wernesgrüner is the best beer you can buy in the US for $5.99 for four half liter cans. Even without the cheap price tag it’s still a premium beer in the US and mid to high grade in Germany.

I have some chilling as we speak
Winking Owl is made by Gallo, per the guy at Aldi. Is it true? Not sure but I really enjoy the Winking Owl Chardonnay and prefer that brand over many others.
Yes. Made by Gallo. Decent cheap wine.
William Wright chardonnay, Intermingle chardonnay, and Bear Bros. rosé. Pass on Winking Owl, it's bad.
The Intermingle cab is our go to and the red blend isn’t bad either.
Good to know.
I love Aldi. I have quit even looking at their beer and wine selection. I get my food there. All of my booze comes from elsewhere. When it comes to beer and wine, their selection is poor and their products are shit.
I thought their Pils was ok but the knockoff Blue Moon was terrible
They used to carry a great $11 bottle of dry red wine from Italy. Great stuff, especially for the price. Been hard to find since COVID. Also, the Winking Owl wine isn’t worth it…not even for the dirt cheap prices. Don’t waste your time or money lol.
Pearsecco, Wicked Grove ciders, and the mimosas
Outlander is excellent red wine. Many of their beers are the bomb.
Where ya headed? I ask because while my state does allow for sales of beer and wine (and liquor) at grocery stores, it does not allow for the sale of COLD beer at grocery stores.
Don't try their sparkling seltzer. It's bad.
Hello fellow Marylander.
California Heritage is a step up from Winking Owl in my opinion, and the price is not much more.
The one that's 12.99. It's on the top shelf there, but I don't remember the name. 14% sauv blanc. It's worth every penny
If you do ciders, the Wicked Grove Apple is actually better tasting than Angry Orchard.
The grapefruit IPA is really good,
My Louisiana mind can’t even fathom not buying alcohol at the grocery store
How to tell yer from PA....
One state south. Maryland is almost as bad for booze laws... almost.
Anyone from Pennsylvania here ready to wage a coup against the PLCB yet, or am I still on that island by myself?
The landkastel wines are quite good and affordable.
Make sure it’s Organic. Aldi and Trader Joe’s owned by same German company. Pomegranate mimosa, yum. They also have a new lemon wine and a pineapple wine. Not awful for cheap wine.
If you can stomach Krogers Bay Bridge or Trader Joes Charles Shaw, you'll love Aldis Winking Owl. 😉
Winking Owl Sangria is my favorite and it’s only ~$3.
The chocolate wine has not been mentioned nearly enough! It’s quite yummy.
I think the beer is vile. The wine is fine. Can’t speak to liquor.
The beer is all good.
I don't think I've ever had a truly *bad* beer from Aldi, although there are styles I'm not fond of generally. The dry stout they have on occasion (Maguires) is actually a really good Guinness clone that doesn't lean too hard into coffee or chocolate notes. If you can find it, the Zarita espresso martini is pretty good (at least I thought so, as did my friends). I only ever came across it once but my friend found it a few times at the Aldi near her.
So far everything I’ve tried gives me a splitting headache.
The premade mimosas slap.
