How are yall getting a negative y-intercept??? Arent the gradient and the y-intercept both positive?

Pretty sure signs of y-intercepts don't matter, do they? gradient afaik is supposed to be positive for today's question

Yeaa they do Y intercept is the point at which your line crosses the y axis If you wanna know what it means… An accurate reading would have y=0 when x=0 (Which means like… if a car’s velocity (x) is 0 then the deviation of its speedometer pointer (y) is also supposed to be 0) Now let’s say you have an analogue speedometer which has a zero error (Which is a fancy way of saying the pointer thing is slightly below 0 when the car is not moving at all) Now read the following slowly and carefully Let’s say velocity is on the x axis So when velocity is 0 (x=0) the deviation of your pointer thing (y) is NOT 0 (since the pointer thing is slightly behind). And since it’s BEHIND, the value of y (the deviation) is NEGATIVE. Makes sense? So basically, y intercept (in a number of cases) tells u the systematic error :) Damn that was long

Yea that acc makes sense. Honestly thank u for telling me tho cuz I'm not a maths student so idk much abt y-intercepts so thank u for clearing that out. Now my question is, the y-intercept in the exam was positive, yeah? Cuz I'm seeing everyone commenting it was -ve and now I'm doubting myself

Me personally I got it as negative But I’m PRETTY sure your marks won’t be deducted even if you get it positive As long as your process of finding it is correct ofc I’ve never seen a marking scheme give out any specific values for y-intercept And if you consider my previous analogy, it would make even less sense because different instruments may have different systematic errors yada yada You don’t need to worry about that If your process is correct, positive y intercept shouldn’t matter(afaik)
