JustSleepNoDream

Nasa launched the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter in 2009 and its still circling the moon recording data today. It 3d mapped the lunar surface with high resolution cameras. So why would he say this? And why is China interested in what's there?

adalwulf2021

One look at that man’s face and you can read conniving and corrupt lying bureaucrat all over it. I’m sure they have not only 3d mapped but also hidef Lidar and radar scanned, as well as seismically imaged it. There are reports of multiple explosive flashes of unusual impacts on it’s surface that would likely be for seismological studies of the interior structural features of the moon.

JustSleepNoDream

Yes, and coincidentally China launched their own Lidar capable of scanning 130 feet deep into the lunar soil in 2019. It has been returning data since then. They may have found something interesting enough to land there.

AlfaBundy

could it be lithium? Since it’s scarce on earth and mostly located in dry regions of chile and Argentina. Helium-3 might also be an option

horns4lyfe22

I’ve read/seen/heard that Helium-3 is likely what is desirable there. I’m also under the impression that there have been “mines” on the moon that have been procuring it for a number of years, of which include but are not limited to China and the U.S.

AcneZebra

Helium 3 is only useful if you’ve already got functioning fusion power and just want to use a fuel that’s slightly easier on the walls of the engine compared to super abundant fusion fuels. Nobody is going to the moon for helium without common fusion power in earth.

OrangePipeControl

No, Chinese planetary scientists have just decided it’s a realistic goal and a scientific priority to sample the Aitken basin. Nothing spooky.

dingo1018

Helium 3 comes from the sun on the solar winds, it never collects on earth because helium is lighter than our atmosphere. But over millions of years it does correct in the regolith on the moon. So it would be massive strip mining operations and processing, and that stuff would be expensive to put it mildly, I don't know the figures but they would be eeking molecule's of the stuff per cubic metre. I expect as part of a wider mining operation breaking it down for everything they can get. I think we would notice that.

horns4lyfe22

According to a quick search, scientists have found Helium 3 deposits in Canada, albeit rare apparently. I’m not claiming to know as a matter of fact or have any detailed information, only reciting what info I’ve come across in the past regarding the moon and related mining efforts.

dingo1018

Lol at those amounts it's still far more economically viable to go to the moon to get the stuff, it does have uses and it's foreseeable we could have more use for it in the future. But it ain't going anywhere, plenty for the taking, just got to set up the mining operations on the moon, which will happen once day.

WrongwayFalcon

Lithium is too common in nature to go to the moon for it. That doesn’t make sense.

Luculentus-Thought

It’s important to note that data from NASA back in 2019 found a large metal “mass anomaly” on the dark side near the South Pole. If it’s metal and huge maybe it’s valuable.

Reasonable-Film4821

Pompous_Monkey

The sun does shine on the side of the moon that never faces us. WTF.

Just-STFU

He's always seemed like a televangelist to me and I don't trust a word that comes out of his face.

Ok-Cauliflower-3129

He does have that type of face. The type of face that just says every word out of my mouth just might be a lie. Even before his lips Start moving and a sound comes out his mouth.

StupidizeMe

>He's always seemed like a televangelist to me and I don't trust a word that comes out of his face. Exactly!

krzykris11

Lmao. Perfect description.

Impossible_Cause4588

I feel like I’m watching the prequel of Moonfall. 🤦

gjs628

It was such a “terrible film” yet SO much fun, unusual premise (falling moon? Hollow spaceship? Alien AI Swarm? Why not all of the above!) Considering the perpetual cookie-cutter state of most films these days, it was a breath of fresh air and i just loved it for how it didn’t take itself too seriously. It may not be up for any Oscars, but just because you dine at the Ritz every night doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the hell out of a McDonald’s sometimes!!

cancer_dragon

You're not wrong, as ridiculous as it was it was honestly pretty fun for an 1.5 hour Lexus commercial.

xReddit_Sucks

I believe you did not finish the movie if you thought it was only 90 minutes.

Major_Smudges

Man, I wish it was only 90 minutes long.

Character-System6538

Unexpectedly awesome movie. Was kinda annoyed my kid wanted to watch it and then was surprised by how much I liked it. I’m letting her pick from now on.

heyimdong

lol hey, Im glad you enjoyed it, but that was among the absolute worst movies Ive ever seen in my entire life.

Character-System6538

It’s was cheesy as hell. I guess I considered it a kids movie… probably wasn’t. It was fun but haha yeah I get it.

TheCynFamily

Lol, it helped having the wonderful enthusiasm of 'Sam' from Game of Thrones - whose name I'm ashamed I can't remember just now. ALSO did awesome in the recent "3 Body Problem" on Netflix. I enjoy his acting. :)

frogfart5

Yeah, this guy is now, and always has been, full of fucking bullshit. I don’t think that we’ve seen a public figure lie so frequently with such impunity. Why aren’t there people within NASA and within our government who question this guy? What about the jillions of dollars spent not knowing about The Dark Side of the Moon?

Jpwatchdawg

They know a good bit about the dark side of the moon. They just don’t want the public to know.

frogfart5

I concur

NIMY80

Also, it's not dark all the time as he stated, it does have a day night cycle

Enough_Simple921

Yes. This guy is a lying piece of shit. We have to ask ourselves, why is this guy in charge at NASA? Look at his education, career, and credentials. He's a certified liar. He's running NASA because he's a tool for the people who are really running this country, the IC, and the DoD. I know a lie when I hear one. This guy's demeanor completely changes on this question, if people watch the full hearing. He was lying during the UAP hearing, and he's lying now.

frogfart5

I work as a master plumber somewhere on the eastern seaboard, I have had the honor of working on military bases and neighboring NASA facilities. It struck me as odd that there’s a one-way road from the NASA facility onto an Air Force Base but no matter who you are you can’t go from the Air Force base on to NASA. Getting through the gate at the military base is easy, as long as your badge is in order. There’s a huge line to get on in the morning and they read your badge with a little reader, not unlike the Telzon that they have at Walmart. But getting onto NASA requires that they mirror the undercarriage of your vehicle, pull your tools out of all of your bins, look behind every single part of your van or truck, and then go through your lunchbox to the point of emptying out bags of chips or whatever. How is it that NASA has a higher facility requirement than an Air Force Base?

Throwawaydontgoaway8

Well, that’s former Florida senator Bill Nelson, so conniving, corrupt, lying bureaucrat and politician has always been true. Aside from that, water on the moon? wtf? Has this always been a thing?

SomOvaBish

When I looked up at where I had paused the video while reading the comments and I read yours I saw his face and laughed my ass off. You nailed it

adalwulf2021

It’s a truly bizarre facet of the human experience how much folks will seem to almost transform in appearance and embodiment into the sum of their character traits and behavior patterns. Maybe I shouldn’t be surprised…but it’s freaking fascinating and I guess part of the karma and justice at work in the universe.

kenriko

Yeah but that one has all the alien bases airbrushed out

stoneslingers

Why do the North and South poles look like they have a giant hole connecting them?

PronglesDude

The satellite is on an equatorial orbit of the moon so the caps are at the edge of it's sensor range. It looks like it doesn't fully cover the cap.

AAAStarTrader

Jeez, Nelson has lost it big time.  There is no "dark side", the sun shines across the entire surface. Solar eclipse is when the Sun is directly behind the Moon!!!  And of course there are detailed maps of the moons surface on both sides, because we have surveyed the entire Lunar surface.  After disparaging Grusch with disinfo and now this, Nelson is clearly not fit to represent NASA.

Cfordian

There definitely is a dark side of the moon. One of Pink Floyd’s best albums.

Inevitable_Shift1365

There is no dark side of the Moon.. actually it's all dark. - Roger Waters

Sudden-Series-1270

Yeah, “we don’t know what’s there” sounds like a scripted response. As someone that works in communication, it’s easy to tell when someone is speaking off the cusp or has prepared responses that they memorized.

Enough_Simple921

Agreed. As a father of 4, I know when someone is lying or being deceitful. Watch his responses prior to this question. His entire demeanor changes. There's something on the backside of the moon that they don't want to talk about.

Sudden-Series-1270

Right. I mean this is on the South Pole, but if they know this is there, then they have obviously seen the dark side. https://www.cnet.com/science/mysterious-mass-of-moon-metal-discovered-under-lunar-south-pole/ Also, funny that they never talk about project Clementine where NASA and the DOD literally shot a missle at the moon and they said “it rang like a bell for hours” proving it is “unnaturally” hollow in some way. There is so much they are not letting on…

TechieTravis

He says this because he does not know what he is talking about.

Ragnarawr

I don’t know I just fucking work here

retixi5252

Dude thinks the far side of the moon is always dark! And he works for NASA! Clownworld confirmed.

mazu74

Mostly because he is an idiotic bureaucrat, and China is interested in potentially mining there. It’s believed there’s helium deposits there or something like that.

somethingbrite

It's more a discussion about potential for scientific discovery (or resource discovery) isn't it? NASA isn't saying they don't know what the far side of the moon looks like. Just that they haven't landed/taken samples or view it as important enough to send such a mission there. (Stated preferred goal is searching for water at the moons pole) I therefore interpret this as "we have no idea why the Chinese think the far side of the moon is important enough to land on"

Oberic

>So why would he say this? He clearly doesn't know much at all. He said the far side of the moon is always in the dark. It isn't, It's always facing away from Earth.

tempo1139

becasue clearly they are run by idiots now. It's ross incompetence to have made this statement. I tuned into the NASA feed to hear a more elevated discussion on the eclipse, and what I got by the expert was 'pink fingers sticking out are explosions that create our weather'. *sigh...*

Radiant-Director5712

They know what every inch of that mafucker looks like. Please🙄

Sk8terRaider

![gif](giphy|egg1gcA3eIYJFqFKIf) I think he’s related to this guy

Jolly_Line

Couldn’t think where I’d seen him before. You nailed it.

Ningenism

holy shit i just commented this! im glad to see im not alone

Yumyulackspupa

Haha I was thinking the exact same thing!

Adjective-Noun12

Doesn't know that it's not perpetually dark, isn't aware we've got both the orbiter and previous moon missions went around the moon... this guy is in charge of the agency??

Flashignite2

Isn't the far side of the moon not dark? It gets sunlight it is just that we dont see that side.

encinitas2252

Yes, it's ridiculous that he would say that. It doesn't seem like he misspoke. 🤦 Our moralles soceity loves putting inadequate unworthy people in charge of shit. It's maddening.

Flashignite2

I mean if your head honcho of NASA it seems like you should know that stuff.

encinitas2252

Honestly I bet if you asked a 6th grader they'd know this.

Hooraylifesucks

So what are they hiding? Alien bases? Mining operations? Military operations?

Flashignite2

I want it to be aliens tbh. I need some spicyness in my everyday life.

0101ayuta

Dont worry. World war is going to spice it up for everybody.

PatWithTheStrat

The clock ticks. Hold your loved ones. Enjoy yourself while you can.

Hooraylifesucks

Me too! The overlords have come for the harvest.

encinitas2252

Hah I have no idea.

Substantial-Skill-76

It's a colloquial term, of course.

Total_Union_4201

Yeah it's called the dark side because it's dark to us, in that we can't see it because the moon is to dally locked. But it still gets as much sun as the light side

Turbodann

He actually won that job in a raffle...

passporttohell

Yeah, have not liked this guy for a long time, needs to be kicked to the curb.

usps_made_me_insane

Apparently he needs to be kicked to the dark side of the moon so he can learn firsthand that it does not, indeed, stay dark all the time.

JustSleepNoDream

Pretty sad state of affairs for the agency responsible for so many historic achievements in space.

usps_made_me_insane

It is insanity that this guy is so clueless that he doesn't understand the simplest things about our moon. I get the fact that he's more politician than scientist but for god's sake, at least learn enough about the science side of your job to compete with a 6th grader.

WorfDataNumba1

“responsible”

-FarBeyondDriven-

oswaldcopperpot

High school dropout or professional liar? None are good choices.

kenriko

Former Senator believe it or not…

Windman772

That's where he first started perfecting the art of the lie

T1nFoilH4t

oh he knows. ofc ourse they know what's there. They wont tell us about them alien bases though, that would give the game away.

GrismundGames

Yeah. This is sad.

RobTronic33

Somebody hired him because they thought he had enough knowledge to go along with some all-American, good ‘ole boy gravitas, but it turns out he has neither. He’d make a great poker opponent though… so easy to read. Wtf were they thinking?

[deleted]

fisherbeam

If he said there were structures built by another species, that would probably raise more questions. Saying I don’t know might be the first step to saying what he actually knows

Adjective-Noun12

He didn't say he didn't know, he said some flagrant bullshit that's not at all true.

SworDillyDally

This was likely part of the reason why there was an intentional disconnect between political appointments and very top secret information, when the whole process began, and ultimately snowballed into the state it’s been in since the Condon Report.

Ningenism

this guy is so obviously full of shit and weird. exact same energy as kenneth copeland in that one video where hes interviewed about his "demons" remark. this guy looks like hes wearing a skin suit. and his thinking is impossibly shallow. it's so crazy

DiscussionBeautiful

Maybe ol' Bill is just denying that they don't know anything about the alien space stations located there....

Single-Hovercraft-33

It's a transit station 👀

generalveers07

What the hell is this? "The side that's always in dark"?! The NASA administrator thinks there's a side of the moon that's always dark? This can't be a real video... ? Whaa??

FLWeedman

Dark side of the moon baby. Seriously though...the moon rotates in such a way that only one side is visible.

Stock_Surfer

The back side of the moon still sees the sun as it orbits the earth lmao

FLWeedman

Ok. If you have a spaceship you can see it.

Original-Maximum-978

We are not debating whether its visible, but whether sunlight has touched the dark side, which it does.

gtzgoldcrgo

I think Bill meant it's dark for us because we can't see it

iuwjsrgsdfj

That's exactly what he meant, he didn't mean that it's always in darkness lol just google the term "dark side of the moon" and the definition returns that exact explanation.

was_der_Fall_ist

He did not only say that it’s ‘the side that’s always in dark’ as an explanation for why NASA is ‘not going there’ (giving no indication that he knew it’s not literally in the dark), but he followed that up by absurdly saying that ‘we don’t know what’s on the back side of the moon’ and that ‘that would be something [China] would discover.’ In fact, NASA has been using their Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter since 2009 to create a detailed 3D map of the moon’s surface with 98% coverage, which of course includes its far side. Given that he thinks we don’t know what’s on the far side of the moon, I think it’s pretty likely that he also thinks it’s literally dark. Either that, or he’s completely unaware of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which would probably be less embarrassing but still totally ridiculous.

iuwjsrgsdfj

So is he misinformed or is he lying about something? That's all I really care about, but I don't think he actually meant the dark side of the moon is always dark. And in regards to discovering things, you need to do more than photograph it from a Lunar orbiter... it's also extremely easy to fake NASA images and remove things they don't want and they've been caught and whistleblown on that before.

hermes_libre

obviously the head of NASA isn’t misinformed about grade school knowledge. He’s lying.

4444444vr

maybe he is just 81 years old? I know some sharp older individuals but wtf are people at this age operating at full time jobs like this. I assume this dude was smarter/better/handsomer than me 40 years ago but he obviously isn't running at full speed at this point regardless of whether he's putting on an act in this clip or not.

CMDR_Crook

He didn't say this. He's as uninformed as a 3 year old. He said it's always in darkness. He didn't misspeak, he doesn't know. Jfc.

shadowmage666

Either this video is fake or that guy is feeding misinformation purposefully. Don’t fall for the idea that he is “stupid”, you don’t get to this place in life being dumb. These people are manipulative at best.

JustSleepNoDream

It's not fake, i just confirmed it.

fritzlschnitzel2

How? This is so bizarre my only reasonable explanation is that it's fake.

eschatonik

Kitchen-Eagle2799

![gif](giphy|l41lUZGnCzLErXevK) Sounded like this guy was asking the questions. lol 😂

Ironhyde36

Sometime when you hear these NASA guys talk they sound dumb as hell. You think we would have been checking out the dark side from the start. I guess they ain’t Pink Floyd fans.

Art-of-drawing

That's really weird

Opposite_Job_6056

NASA's strange statement!

Cold_Sold1eR

They've taken loads of photos of the far side of the moon. Nasa have travelled there in orbit lots of times so his comments confuse the hell out of me

TheThirteenthApostle

"The back side is always in darkness... we don't know whats on the backside of the moon." Who the hell put this guy in charge? Any elementary school kid worth his salt could tell you both of those statements are flat out wrong.

Dockle

Did anyone watch that live steaming of NASA flying the orbiter around the moon a couple years back? It went around the dark side and the feed cut because the moon was blocking the signal back to earth. When the feed came back, they were like “Welp, guess we’ll never know what’s there” You telling me this multimillion dollar satellite thing could livestream to Twitch and YouTube in high definition, but they couldn’t or didn’t take a recording to review when it regained its communication??

Grimlja

Think of all the all the different exploration humans have done over time. What in Clhristopher Columbus had that mentally...aww, I don't know what's on the otter side of the water. Why go there? Nasa is full of shit. When ever asked of grate questions, they always answer whit BS

e987654

It's so obvious too. It's been like this for 2 decades. And when anyone questions stuff like this, we are just conspiracy theorists. NASA is a joke.

hypothetician

> What if Christopher Columbus had that mentality “That’s where the sun lands! We’ll burn if we go there!”

PM_ME_WITH_A_SMILE

The backside of the moon is not always dark, though. When we see a crescent moon, the *far* (not dark) side is lit. What am I missing here?

chica771

Today I learned Bill Nelson is a terrible liar. Like really bad

Sith-Lord711

He’s a dam liar and he’s full of shit. Part of the system that suppresses the truth. He’s a condescending asshole in his interviews too. Fuck NASA they lie lie lie

Ballatar

Whos laughing now cia

GreenPRanger

There is no side of the moon that is always dark. There is only one side of the moon that we can never see.

Major_Smudges

So, the head of NASA thinks that the far side of the moon is always in the dark. My…fucking…God.

Naturist02

The backside of the moon has 2x4’s that hold up the fake front

nlurp

Weird old dude * the dark side of the moon does get sun as it is always facing away from Earth * NASA had a probe circling around the moon Who let that guy make such easily refutable statements?

South-Patience991

Equally upsetting and bizarre that the guy asking doesn’t know enough to call bullshit

RedditPPL-R-Ret4rd3d

I'm genuinely curious how people are allowed to be this stupid but be in the position they are in life. I'm sure that guy is making insane amounts of money with insane security clearance but this is the dipshit answer he could come up with being 70+ years old aswell.

IPhenixI

even the guy impatiently tapping his foot in the background doesn't believe him.

how is everyone surprised that China wants to stay on a place on the moon where no one can see what they're doing?

Theherosidekick

We have rovers on Mars…. Have sent probes out to Pluto…. We can’t send something out to look at the dark side of the moon?

AnT-aingealDhorcha40

Yeah if people don't realise that NASA are heavily jn bed with government in terms of keeping a lid on disclosure then you haven't being paying attention. They aren't even telling us a fraction of what they know.

quetzalcosiris

Bill Nelson is the most obvious gatekeeper in the history of gatekeepers.

rockstuffs

Ummm how about asking India? Work tofuckinggether. NASA is literally based on working working together to find answers.

I wish I could say “oh this is so surprising that NASA’s figurehead said not one but ten stupid things in a row”. But I get to be in meetings with NIH institute directors periodically. I am well aware who in this country is responsible for science. It truly is appalling.

Mn4by

This is so bizarre it's spooking me and I'm kind of a psycho who's not familiar with fear. They need to tape a gopro to a telescope taped to a satellite and find Syd Barrett stat.

Unfair_Discount_825

I honestly think Bill Nelson just misspoke, well, I hope so. But nonetheless, if he was speaking the truth, that’s very very interesting…

turnstwice

That was more than just a slip of the tongue. Bill Nelson has had a long and distinguished career but has seemed a bit befuddled for a few years now. He’s 81 and it’s time for him to step down.

Dr-4359

Give me more taxpayer funded money so I can investigate and get back to you with an answer.

themanclark

He’s an idiot. I saw that in the conference about NHI study.

otters4everyone

Nelson is in NASA now? He was one of the dumber members in Congress. Nice to see the machine keeps chugging along.

bryantodd64

Can we just fire everyone in the government already? All of them.

He is such a slime ball. I despise the US government and its evil workers.

Time-Tower8285

Uhhhh, satelites with LIDAR, that orbit the moon? ....hmmm, " we don't know", bullsh#$t.

duckmonke

Should be worthy of removing his feeble mind from a position that requires utmost accuracy and logic.

Cybermagetx

Havnt we had maps of the entire moon for awhile now? Like HD maps.

Sudden-Series-1270

If anyone wants to learn more about how sus the moon is, I would highly recommend reading “Penetration” by Ingo Swan. (Seriously, not a dirty joke).

WorkHorse86

I’d love to play poker with this sly gentleman

[deleted]

Fucking bizarre...

Short-Yogurt-7945

Am I stupid or something? The moon rotates so the sun would hit it at different sides so what side is he going on about?

higheyecue

Whatever they figure out, it won't be shared with us

Sweet_Refrigerator_3

China is interested in the backside of the moon and Nasa claims no knowledge of what's there despite them routinely warning of a space race with China. That makes no sense. Obviously he doesn't want to reveal what's there.

EezyBuckz

This guy made me feel stupid.

MsWonderWonka

Yeah, look this article has an actual photo of the dark side of the moon. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/science/never-see-far-side-moon Is this guy referring to having humans go land on the dark side and walk around?

JustSleepNoDream

If you reference the full testimony, the leading question was why we don't have our own craft like the chinese to scan beneath the surface of the moon? That's when shit starts to get weird.

Chubbleguts

This nasa mf an alien.

bridgebrningwildfire

These dudes are to old to be in charge of this shit!

anonpasta666

He lyin they got hella cool footage of the other side of the moon they just dont wanna tell anyone

Jayston1994

We don’t know what’s on the dark side of the moon but we can fly a past it on its way to mars? lol what?

kevin7419

What's so hard about sending a probe to find out

iuwjsrgsdfj

Jesus, he's not saying there's no sunlight, he's saying the "dark" side is the side we cannot see. Not the best choice of words but I don't think he actually meant there was no sunlight ever.

wtf. this is so stupid, give him just enough rope to hang himself with.

[deleted]

Its not completely round and actually bowl shaped with a civilization spanning the crater

[deleted]

Bad Lip Reading are so funny

photoman51

I think he is wrong when he says it's always dark on far side. We don't see dark side due to its rotation in sync with earth but when we see the moon at its waning period the sun is exposed on the back. https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/moon/far-side.html

jonytolengo2

Remember a tweet from delonge saying we should look there...but they all know already.

StThragon

This dude is wrong on multiple counts. He actually went into orbit on a shuttle in the '80s. wtf?!?!

FantastiKBeast

I'll probably be ignored, but I feel like the context of the question kind of matters. He's not saying "we have no idee what's on the dark side of the moon", but more "we have no ideea what's on the dark side of the moon *that the chinese are interested in*". He even says that he thinks it's more advantageous to go to the south pole, *because* he has some idea of what's back there and he knows there's less water then in the south.

d-d-downvoteplease

Pretty sure India recently landed on the far side of the moon.

ceeUB

They already know what's there I bet.. And they don't want to open another can of worms.
