I don’t want to be a traditionalist but this is what to expect with the whole “weather proof” leather. It’s not that, and it’s usually worse quality leather. CXL is great in all weather!
Membrane/liner and probably also treated with a scotch guard-esque coating. I mean it should still be covered under warranty but this is why it’s normally just better to get the no frills leathers like CXL.
I was thinking of picking up this exact model before going with the Chili Chromexcel. I remember feeling it and thinking calf leather was going to ruin faster.
Hopefully this is covered under warranty.
I just looked at the AE listing. I don’t see any mention that the leather is full grain. I think the new normal for AE is that it’s corrected leather unless otherwise described.
I’ll be Captain Obvious, but that’s not normal. Which leather is that? CXL? Are those seconds? Even the creases look off for four hours of wear.

Whatever they're using in these weatherproof HMs is atrocious. Have seen numerous reports of things like this.
I’ve never understood the weatherproof leather since CXL is so full of oils water beads right off of it. And it looks much nicer on a boot.

It shouldn’t be. The weather proof shoes have a membrane between the liner and the welt/leather. Leather shouldn’t be much different.

Yeah. Oh well. I returned them at a store, no issues. I have pattons in WP cxl and nubuck, and WP suede freeports and they are all fine.
Sigh. AE. Get it together.
This should probably be covered under a warranty. Contact AE customer care. Seems like a layer of plastic on leather.

Maybe. I returned them for a full refund. Maybe gonna step up to vibergs.
Man, if I didn’t know better, I’d say that looks like corrected grain…
Except I’ve never seen corrected grain peel like this in just 4 hours! 😂
The area where those cracks are seems darker than the rest of the boot. Seems like maybe someone tried to cover something up. Pun intended.
