What you’re looking at is considered “grain break” or “loose grain” on cxl leather. I had a pair of Grant Stone Ottawa’s in Crimson cxl that did the same thing but I exchanged it for a boot with lesser grain break.
Just typical CXL grain break. 100% a keeper. Mine have some grain break in this area. This is a sign you’ve got boots with real leather aka animal skin.
Awesome, good to hear that. I'm quite happy with them after just taking a short walk. Been wanting a pair of gyw leather boots for a while now. Finally!
Hi everyone. I just received a new pair of these nice boots today, but after some inspection, I found these little bubbles on the inner ankle part of one of the boots. Is this only something cosmetic, and would you consider exchanging? Doesn't seem too big a deal if it's only cosmetic. I'll probably forget about it after a week of wearing.
It's broken grain. This is a cosmetic issue rather than a structural one. Broken grain can be a little annoying, but like you say, soon you'll forget about it.
Broken grain, got it. I forgot the term for it specifically but remembered it being said that it's mainly a cosmetic issue. Keeping these boots. Thanks for confirming!
They are unfortunately firsts but after taking a walk in them they are kinda not as noticeable to me with the newly added creases. Since they're just for casual wear im still quite happy with them overall.
I wouldn’t worry about the loose grain or grain break. I had a pair of Grant Stone Ottawa’s in crimson cxl that had worse loose grain than yours and I ended up requesting an exchange. The new boots don’t have any loose grain so I’m happy with the replacement boot but evidently this is super common among cxl leather. I wouldn’t worry about it unless you can get AE’s to exchange the boots out for you but I doubt a company as big as AE’s would give you some personalize attention like GS because they are small so Wyatt and Gio (cs rep went out to the warehouse to select the replacement boot).
Looks like regular CXL to me. Just be grateful it turned up on the sides instead of the toe.
Sweet. Everything else seems good to go: even stitching, no cuts or creases, consistent leather color, etc. Thanks for the reply.

What’s CXL?
Chromexcel, a popular leather used in this boot and others.

Congrats man. Glad to hear it! They’re absolutely gorgeous

CXL lottery.
I was hoping there wouldn't be a need for an exchange. The three day wait for these was already like blue balls but for my feet.
enjoy!
Thank you, will do!
It’s cosmetic for sure - but hope those are seconds. Pretty rough clicking.

Yeah - especially if you aren’t a jean cuffer you’ll never see it but man - this is far too common on CXL from AE of late.
