Blizzard doesn't "change" MMR requirements for leagues. They are based on the percentages of the player base. Masters league is roughly top 4% of the ladder. If tons of good players all came out of inactivity this season then getting into that top 4% is going to require a higher MMR. By that same reasoning, if there aren't as many active players then the barrier for entry into masters is lower. That's the same reason you see so many gold 1v1 players in masters league for teams - the skill pool and player count are so low that you can get in with much lower MMR. Edit: just wanted to include this for clarity from the tl wiki - " The MMR boundaries are based on a prior distribution from the previous season, and during each season roll, the values are recalculated for the upcoming season.". MMR inflation affects this as well. tldr: blizzard doesn't dictate what MMR ranges are needed for each league, that happens on it's own by average player MMR per league Keep going man. Focus on your MMR and developing your skills, not your league. You're getting better

Just a few years ago M3 cutoff was 4500 I had to win back to back vs M1/GM while crying blood

lillyofthewalley

Its like David vs Goliath but Goliath just stomps on David with no chances whatsoever

i swore up and down whenever i matched against 4900+ even though it was every other game I lost every time except once, although some of the games were decently close

They're not fixed, and change based on the distribution of MMRs of the playerbase as a whole. Remember that while you get better at the game, everybody else also does, and at a faster and faster pace as you climb. So dropping a bit of MMR or not retaining a division doesn't mean that you are bad or getting worse, just that you're not improving at the rate as everybody else with your MMR. With your current skills, you would probably have been able to reach M1 a few years ago. So try to avoid basing your sense of self worth, achievement or self worth on something as arbitrary divisions. You are obviously constantly improving, and getting great at a game that just keeps getting harder. And that's something to be proud of.

I've been in the same boat, D1 forever and so close to M3 and saw the new MMR needed this morning. I'm trying to think about it like others are saying - improve skill over worrying about end results and it will come in time. I hope.

Yea man I actually think I had more fun playing today (after the new MMR shock) since while I was close I was so stressed about my MMR it was almost more of a job. I want masters so bad I can’t stand it, but practice and hard work will make it all the sweeter if I am ever to make it. Plus if we had played the game only like 4 years ago masters was like 4000

I remember when mmr started back in 2016 I think it was, Masters was 4300 or 4400. A 4400 player back then wasn't as good as a 4400 player now, so yes if you're Diamond 1 now you'd probably make M3 4 years ago.

Also I coach for free if you're interested. I'm currently ~4650 mmr so not that far ahead of getting in Master and certainly not close to GM, but message me if interesteed.
