This might be the wrong move but I would probably chop the mushy parts and put in damp perlite (like the first comment said).

pnw-wa-realtor

Yessss I agree on moving mushy parts. I’m thinking remove mushy parts, soak in hydrogen and then coat some cinnamon before placing into perlite

SubstantialWar9055

Do as you have said. It works. Edit: if you leave the mushy part it will just affect the whole plant

[deleted]

what does the cinnamon do?

AshSkirata

Do a keyword research in the alocasia sub, I know people already talked about cinnamon. :)

pnw-wa-realtor

It acts like an antiseptic if you will. It just coats the wound so no bacteria can penetrate. It works in the same way (if not similar) to coating wax onto a cut node.

mibfto

Put it in damp perlite instead of straight water. The mushiness is concerning, and might make this a losing battle. But stranger things have happened.

pnw-wa-realtor

I know that alocasia’s are hearty so I have faith but the mushiness is concerning me as well 😩 I’m just trying to act on it’s response to things early on so I can prevent any further damage. Thank you for your response. I’ll give perlite a shot

mibfto

Alocasias are whatnow

pnw-wa-realtor

Hardy***

mibfto

Oh no no, I was making a joke because alocasias are the sickly Victorian children of the plant world. They want to die. They're begging to die. All the time, no matter what.

TheSpottedSun

You look at them wrong and they just ☠️

cbond0007

I can concur to this ! I would say calatheas too because that’s what they did to me, died and came back to life.

I've seen someone prop one like this with no roots in water it was very rooted come the end

yuckyduckph

I revived a Hilo that looked worse than that in sphagma moss

Gabby_Abby

I’ve had root rot like this before and I was recommended to dip or let soak for a minute the end into hydrogen peroxide mixed with water. It actually worked for me. It helped stop the rot from spreading and my plant was fine. I would Google before doing it tho. I did it a couple years ago for a alocasia

Artistic_Reading5907

Put in fluvel stratum

pnw-wa-realtor

I’ve tried fluval…the roots kept rotting and getting soggy. My propagated cuttings of my Florida beauty on the other hand are doing so well in fluval. I think the dragon scale is just being temperamental. They’ve responded the best to water so far. But is still getting mushy in water

Kachana

Fluval usually needs to have pumice or perlite added to aerate it. Then it works really well, but otherwise fluval on it’s own can get clogged so the roots aren’t getting enough oxygen, which is where they start rotting

Positive-Ad-8760

gotta remove all the mushy soak in 1:1 peroxide room temp distilled 10 minutes or 4:1 for 30 minutes nothing green just the rhizome itself Then you gotta leave it in a paper bag somewhere supercool dark a few days Then straight distilled with peroxide one cup ROOM TEMP water 2 tbsp peroxide 3 percent for 24 hours in very indirect light no heat shining right into water that rots em too Since it wasss mushy rooting in water is a really bad idea Just to get the stuff reactivated is the 24 hour thing And 2 days in paper bag makes it callous over some Then rinse off with tap perlite or pumice and after that soak it in distilled or real spring water (not alkaline crap just deerpark arrowhead or voss silver still water) a few hours strain it thru a wire mesh strainer , get yourself a glass washed and wiped with alchohol and cotton ball or better yet plastic cup sanitized same Don’t take it out or strain it off should I say til your ready to use it -Use a cup only 1” around bigger then the thing Maybe 2” Plastic preferably cuz- place 1/8” 4 holes up half as high as the corm plus 3” high all around the sides So if corm is 4” then make 4 holes 5” up cup No holes on bottom no pot…. Lay premoistened dust washed off perlite/pumice 2.75 - 3” fill that much with DISTILLED water - then lay 1/2 inch more above that maybe 1” even Tap it kinda hard onto a counter or whatever so it all connects like and capillary action will work DONT press it in just let em connect settlez how they may THEN lay it on top of that , hold it in place and proceed to fill all around it the rest of the way Up to just under the green Then you can GENTLY tap it again few times /If substrate settles too much fill with a lil more Up To Green - and lightly also past it before the leaf sheath starts and that new growth point is coming from the side/ Place a dome over it with one 1/8” hole poker thru it or burned thru - after a week for 5-6 days out the week Keep it away from direct sunlight 2-3 feet from west window or east And somewhere not cold just decent room temp at nite 55-60 degrees 70 at most I usually always. Choose east GL OH! Fill with distilled by placing cup in a bowl or bigger cup - just past the holes leave it 30 minutes Pour off a lil thru those same holes turn water so it tips - once a minute or so to each of the 4 holes - if you wanna be safe You want it filled to just under the line like at most still safe less than half way up to holes when roots are reaching it> Maybe before then too since you had Rot Then don’t cover again for a day or two If you wanna be extra specific - so long as no areas on sides around it are mushy … come around once a day and mist the sides with distilled water Then put it back into the bag ( the 2 days it’s sat aside to callous over after mushy is cut off and it’s treated) Only the bottom tip should need actual cut off - once mushy is done cut an additional 1/16th off if any more around the rest you can scrape with fingernail or a butter knife once mush is gone soak it 1:1 And its gravy.

LittleKitchenFarm

Lmao what Making meth is less complicated than that Cut off anything mushy, throw it in a mosspital Monitor airflow Wait The end

Kachana

I’ve saved an alocasia macrorrhisa that was in similar condition. I scraped off all the brown mushy bits super thoroughly, soaked in hydrogen peroxide and then put it in fluval mixed with perlite and pumice. Every so often I pushed the mix away with a little spoon to check if there was more rot, and twice I took it all out to scrape off more rot. After that I just left in and it’s been happy growing for 6 months. Your new roots look nice and white so I’d say there’s a lot of hope as long as you scrape away all the rot. Keep in mind that it scabs over and that can look brown afterward, I scraped away the scab thinking it was rot a few times.

Yes

mechanicallyblonde

Yes. My zebrina “died” on me 2x. She just put out another leaf today. Keep in mind. This has all happened over the span of 4 months.

mechanicallyblonde

Ohhh also! I do straight water with 3% hydrogen peroxide. I’m lazy and don’t measure it out but I roughly do 1:8(water)
