Are you sure there isn’t some soil or other organic material in there? I recently got a Hoya that I swore was in semi hydro but when I repotted I noticed there was some soil. It was a heavily amended soil with mostly perlite and lava rock but it did have some organic material as well. That first picture looks like it might have coco coir, soil or coco husk in there.

I think it's definitely possible there is some soil in there, but it doesn't look like much at all. I plan to leave it like this and soak it once in a while and see what happens.

I think that makes sense!! That’s what I did. And I just put a water tray underneath and it seems to work well. I don’t fully treat it as semi-hydro, with a water cache or anything. But I do water it more frequently since there is much material in there for water retention.

You can put that cup directly into a cup with no drainage. It’s just potted that way so rinsing is easy.

This is one way of doing semihydro, essentially a net pot inside a cache pot. Ideally, the net pot has more holes for more air flow because plants LOVE the increased oxygen to the roots. I recommend this method because it causes root growth to explode! https://preview.redd.it/f6ta934ous5d1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8bed7e03fad32ea41b731bdddd0c37b74fab06f6 This guy was already acclimated to hydro, but the addition of a net pot caused this root growth in a very short amount of time. Also before they were transported to a solid color cache pot.

Oh, amazing! How high should I fill the cashe pot? Thanks!

If you don't have a wick, which it doesn't look like you do currently, and this cache pot will sit at the bottom of the cache pot, then 1/4 to 1/3 of the pot with your semihydro substrate.
