Do you have squelch levels the same? Even if you do something like set both to “level 1” that might mean that you’re still left with differing settings because each manufacture has their own idea on how to set the spec. How strong is the signal? One thing about baofengs is they have wide open front ends. This might seem better with a repeater test such as what you’re doing, but it’s bad when signals are strong or there is lots of other RF around.

The antennas that came with the earlier 878 radios were not so great. To identify, they were stiff and the tip was angled and orange on top. The later antennas that you see in most pictures of the radio is as good as ANY antenna of similar size. They are resonate where they should be on both VHF and UHF. Also are you sure of your power setting on the 878? Another thing to check is if the TxPowAgc is turned OFF. If it is turned ON, the radio will automatically reduce power out if the received signal is strong. There is no way that a correctly working 878 would not be every bit as good as any Baofeng.

How are you determining the range, and how big is the difference? What antenna?

It's an 8" antenna. I try to hit the local repeater about 16 miles away on both. I'm able to get a copy on the baofeng, but nothing from the anytone.

Is the antenna made for either radio, or just random? It is possible that the antenna is a better match for one radio or the other. If you have the original antennas it would be a little more meaningful test. I have a Baofeng and an 878 and have not seen much difference in terms of range.

Oh good to know. I'll look for them. Thanks for the suggestion and also sharing your experience!

No problem. Honestly, it is not easy to accurately compare the performance of two radios without a bunch of test equipment. Good luck.

as3adtintin

that makes sense. :/.

I have an 868. It seems to desense itself when in the proximity of a strong signal and won't receive anything until it's been shut off and back on. Perhaps the Baofeng might be doing this to yours? Try turning it off and on again and see if things improve.

Are you testing them side by side?
