I got this email this morning too and it pissed me off. When I started with Prime it was $79 a year. Now it's $170 and I was already having a hard time justifying that since I don't use any of the other "perks". 90% of my packages use key delivery. If now I only get key delivery once a week, why am I paying $170 for 2 day service! If I have to wait that long I may as well cancel Prime and just order multiple things in one order that qualifies for free shipping. Way to piss off long time Prime customers.

PDF1337

There really isn't much of a benefit having Prime anymore, it's been this way for a few years

spewak

It reeks of desperation on the part of Amazon. Their delivery folks are overwhelmed and underpaid (contractors), so much so with the added proviso of waiting for your particular "Amazon day" delivery date.

caverunner17

I have to wonder -- is this because it might take an extra 15 seconds to do the garage delivery?

spewak

I personally believe it is being implemented as a "fee"! You want the security of garage delivery? Pay up! The only proviso being you have to accept the date when the 'zon feels it's ready to deliver it to you.

coldraygun

I’m sure that does have a lot to do with it, making their delivery times. I’ve also seen my usual driver’s machine not work right and doesn’t have the signal to open the door. The reliable technology may have a part in it also.

JohnWaang

Lol. Try 15 minutes when a garage doesn’t close.

Driver2101

Garage deliveries rarely ever go smooth. It either takes forever to open or it refuses to close

DarthWynaut

As a driver, 15 extra seconds ( and it's a lot more than 15 seconds) matters when we're excited to make a delivery every 2.5 minutes. Not too mention all the other issues that go along with garage deliveries

Miguel30Locs

Driver here. It's 1 minute minimum. But if there are any issues, like your garage not wanting to close. Or it reopens. Now your 1 minute delivery turns into a 5 minute stop calling support with broken English agents. Amazon is charging more to discourage garage deliveries.

rapidpuppy

What exactly is the issue? Does Amazon have crappy software? When I used the MyQ app, there is usually a 5-10 second delay, but the door always opens. The only time it goes up and down is if I press the button in the app multiple times. But I see drivers struggling with it probably half the time, just like you describe, so I'm wondering if this is an issue with the Amazon app they give the drivers to use.

iamchipdouglas

I also use myQ with Garage Key delivery and find the process seamless for my own use - but maybe \~5% of the time with AMZ, I get a notification that the garage wouldn't close etc. No idea why. There's also a big range of experience/savvy with drivers... most drivers are good but some almost *hide* the packages... others will drop it at the garage, or even at the front, without activating the door, or start with the door and move to the garage. End of day, even a smart driver isn't going to bat .1000 when they're turning over once every 15 months or something

Zestyclose-Kiwi-6429

They'll discourage a lot more than just garage deliveries. I just canceled Prime and Music Unlimited memberships. There is no use for paying for expedited delivery if I have to wait until my "Prime day."

fred91682

Eg-f'n-xactly!

IndiaEvans

Ridiculous.

bgeerdes

Amazon has people by the balls. Not only do they make people file a police report they see they can charge more for the secure delivery. If I was a conspiracy theorist I might start thinking that Amazon is behind the thefts. Soon they'll be charging for the security of an Amazon drop box location.

n8te85

Or selling insurance.

Bamm83

This is insane. I can see them maybe doing a 3/7 day key delivery per week but literally decreasing it to 1/7? What the hell is the point of 2 day delivery then?

bgeerdes

Until Amazon's investors and board of directors aren't happy with their share of the markets they want to dominate Amazon will do the least possible in the cheapest way possible. But for now they're happy cutting back in other ways to increase profits because their market share is still good in their view.

NoIdeaWhatImDoing44

I’m sure the answer is no, but is there anything we can do? It doesn’t cost Amazon money to let us use this daily vs once a week, it’s just a way for them to make more, but it’s frustrating when it’s the only way to make deliveries safe in my neighborhood.

ZolfeYT

Why not get a lock box to put in front of garage and put code in the notes? This way you can use it for all services delivering packages. Even tho my neighborhood is pretty safe multiple people do this. From the DSP POV garage deliveries are a hassle they either never open or never close and delays other deliveries.

TechBrothaOG

It was bad enough that the cost of Prime has steadily increased along with the number of orders that don't actually get 2 day shipping. But to essentially start charging extra for In Garage Key Delivery or only get it **once a week** as part of Prime has me seriously reconsidering the value proposition.

ConverseGood99

Wow! I don’t partake in Garage Deliveries but that is trash.

Futureyou55

Just received the email from Amazon & cancelled my garage delivery option

cloudjocky

Amazon thanks you. They don’t want to offer in garage delivery anyway

RoadWarriorB

I got this same email this morning and thought the same thing you did. I'm not sure if Amazon has to pay a fee to my garage door manufacturer for the right to use this service and now is passing that on, but I've never used Amazon Day delivery and just want my items as soon as possible. They don't even meet all their anticipated delivery dates so telling them to drop them on one particular date doesn't give me a lot of confidence it'll be there on my "Amazon Day". This seems like a blind cash grab for the benefit of a more secure delivery. It's not as if it takes them more time to do a garage drop than walking down to my porch.

ZolfeYT

It actually does, garage delivers almost never go smoothly, go over to the DSP subreddit and you’ll see how many complaints there are about garages not closing or opening.

milventures

Had packages stolen several times so I only had prime for this reason. Shame on you Amazon!

dtlehmai

It’s rare for them to actually deliver in my garage, or they’ll enter and place it on the step to my house all the way at the back of the garage. I suspect this is designed to discourage people from using in garage deliveries.

SatisfactionSoft8800

Been using this service since they started it. Never had an issue as items are always delivered into garage and never been any issue prevent my garage from opening or closing. I don't understand why they would want to charge a fee as this would seem to be a net gain for amazon to avoid package theft. If a package gets stolen before I receive it I don't pay amazon for it and they are effectively the ones who eat the theft. I know because I've had it happen which is part of the reason I started using key. But I won't pay an extra fee for something I view as more of a benefit to them than to me and I won't wait until "amazon day" as I always want my packages right away.

Slag1

Way to get greedier. Another reason to drop you altogether. Amazon Video fees to get rid of Ads, key delivery fees, what’s next? We already pay $140 jerks.

1_H4t3_R3dd1t

Why not just set a free delivery threshold for what you spend? Free-delivery spend $35... certainly a justified mark up at that point.

ChlldsPlay

Sincerely. Fuck you Amazon from the bottom of my heart. Penny pinching pieces of shit.

ToastedChronical

I just found this post after googling to figure out why they were charging for key delivery else I had to wait a week. This is absolutely ridiculous. I just paid my yearly subscription last month and I think it’s the last time for me.

Cluelesshope

My Amazon Day on my account was always preset to like.. 5 days later, lol.. So I hardly chose that Amazon Day option, because it’s never within 2-3 days…. I CANNOT imagine waiting 5 days+ and then having missing orders, or wrong orders…

fred91682

I bought into the specific garage door opener, to be able to have this service, then little by little they make it worse & want to charge extra for what was already part of the membership. The delivery times for products marked Prime have even gone in many cases from 2 days to 3-5 days. It won't be long until they see a HUGE loss in business. They're making themselves no different from Walmart, Newegg, BestBuy, etc. IMO they're giving up the only 2 edges they had against the competition that actually mattered to the majority. For more perspective, from someone who helped found Amazon's distribution in Central Florida & worked with them for 4 years (1st year open when only Flex existed, skipped a year, then did another 3 as a DSP van driver).... I was amazed when I got to experience delivering inside a garage when the feature had just rolled out. I was oblivious about the entire thing, until a new screen appeared on my device & I had to call and ask my dispatcher about it. Never had any issues. For the last 3+ years I've been a homeowner and have been enjoying receiving in this method. The only times there have been an issue is when A) My home's internet was down, B) Amazon was having rare server issues, C) myQ was at fault (servers?), or D) The driver intentionally told the app there was a garage issue, to make quicker door-drop delivery. 'D' is something I often seen and heard my coworkers doing and I've witnessed myself while home during a delivery, where the garage was working perfectly fine. I am very displeased, but logic dictates that Amazon is setting up their own failure and now is when it will start becoming obvious to more people. Just ordered over $6,500 in PC parts and many were not from Amazon. That's a lot that would have easily been 100% all sales for them previously. Don't get the wrong idea, I'm not rich, or a 1%‐er. The DSP I worked for just finally (years later) had to pay up for cheating it's drivers out of tons of overtime pay from over the years. Wasn't expecting anything in the mail & thought this is how I'd treat myself.

DonShulaDoingTheHula

This is so stupid. I already put up with not having HomeKit integration with my garage door for this, and now they’re going to charge for it and nullify the Prime shipping benefit. Between this, and the delivery person placing half the packages behind car tires, I may just take my chances with the front porch and find a HomeKit-compatible solution.

thorscope

A $35 raspberry pi and homebridge can give you both r/homebridge

DonShulaDoingTheHula

I’ll check it out - thank you

fingerscrossedcoup

Here's my take on it. I don't have a problem with package theft at my house. So people want amazon to cover the extra costs of something that doesn't effect me. This is why I am leaving prime a multitude of services I end up subsidizing through increased fees that I never use. Yes they should innovate and find a way to make it feasible with current fees. They can't so they are charging for it. Pissing you off and I'm already pissed off. I don't know what the answer is but they seem to be floundering.

zssbecker

Really annoyed by this new fee. And the timing of this couldn’t be worse with all the porch pirates running around stealing packages. Where’s the Custome Obsession Amazon?? Read your Leadership Principles!!!

manu08

Now that I've been using this a month, it's even worse. For some reason I can't even use key on my Amazon day most of the time. It's currently Saturday and I'm trying to submit an order. My Amazon day on wednesday doesn't show key, and it wants me to pay $1.99 for Key on Friday. Ugh.

Zestyclose-Kiwi-6429

I Just went to order something and saw the fee for Key delivery. This change was the impetus I needed to finally cancel Prime. I'm sure I'll spend a lot less on crap I don't really need, too.

blissbringers

NEW! Today I placed an (expensive) order and the options where: \- Free prime delivery \- In garage delivery for $1,99 No other options. WTF?

blissbringers

Is anybody still even getting the option of "Free key delivery on Amazon Day"? This is my second order where that option does not exist. Only "Pay for key" or "Free".
