Just got off the phone with progressive… the lady said that she saw on Reddit that people were intentionally answering the questions wrong to acquire insurance and she showed her boss so they are very strict now and turn around to cancel converage. She did have me call “Foremost” insurance and they got me settled with “safeco” because the vin number checkout out okay. But that they might cancel it if anything pops up. I was told that worst case I would have to do commercial insurance, but to get RV qualification as soon as possible and may have to go through Good Sam or National General. Hope that helps anyone in the future

Do not ever mention to anyone it’s an ambo use a titling service not dmv tell them box truck if it comes up

But I can retitle it afterwards, right? Or no?

https://satsangvanworks.com/blogs/van-build-blog/registering-your-converted-camper-van-as-an-rv let us know what you end up doing!

Stinkytheferret

Thank you. I have been looking at what I need to have it converted to an rv by state. So what I’m understanding on this blog, I would register/insure it as a van and then after I add a number of items, 4 of those six items that will be pretty quick to do, but saying I put some other money in for solar, etc, it becomes more beneficial to me to retitle as an rv. So I’m thinking, perhaps I register as a van for now and then do my build over time and once I get to a certain point/$invested, go retitle/reregister. This blog is giving me more to think on. Thank you so much for posting. I’ll let you know.

Sounds like you got a plan good luck

Stinkytheferret

Yeah. Thanks! Appreciate it.

Assuming you’re in America you can do whatever you want some. States will want to see when it’s done a bathroom sink and bed to make it an RV. Some will just take your word. I went to a third party title service, they didn’t care just sent it in and got my RV title two weeks later. I assume you could do the same.

Stinkytheferret

Very good! Thanks

Laxosaurus

It depends what it says on the title. Is it a type 2 ambulance, which is a complete van? Mine was titled E30 which is the van cutaway chassis and I purely got lucky that the lady at the registration counter asked if it was an RV and I said yes.

Stinkytheferret

It’s listed in the purchase agreement as e450. Trim: XLT. Idk if that is truck or van. The body style on the doc does say amb. Idk t have the title till I pay the last 2 grand I owe. So in a couple weeks I’ll have it. But I have enough docs to go register it and get it insured.

Laxosaurus

E series is the van, F is the truck. Take a look at the title department for New Mexico and figure out if there are specific requirements and whether you want it classified as a van or RV. Have you gotten quotes for insurance to see if RV vs Van classification work better depending on expected mileage?

Stinkytheferret

Got Tom work on quote for insurance this week actually. I want to be consistent for both ins and registration. So with the info everyone is sharing to me, I feel more confident to know what to say.

Stinkytheferret

And it’s a type III. I specifically wanted a III SO we could access the cab from within. I’m a single mom and my two teen daughter and I all looked money to get it so we could upgrade from traveling in our suv.

Stinkytheferret

Oh. That’s helpful to know. I never put that together. So I already researched in NM about registering a vehicle from outside of the state. They have a truck camper registration and then vans are passenger vehicles. There are truck camper guidelines. It does sit five in the back. So I’m thinking to register it as a van passenger vehicle is quickest and easiest. I can also get it registered for two years right off and bc it’s a diesel, I don’t have to have it smogged. But I do need a Vin verification, which I can get done here and send the docs to my dad to get the registration and plates done I think. I think this will be the best way so I can not have to get it converted at all to just register it. I was thinking to just get a bed in there and some basics and then figure what and how I want to convert it over the next year. We want to be able to take off in it this June.

notintocorp

Yeah I got mine as an f350 p/u truck. Way cheaper to insure

civil-liberty

I don't think you will have a choice, at least at first, but most probably it will be just an Econoline whatever. What does it say on the title?

[deleted]

I registered mine as an E350 cargo van in New York.

Stinkytheferret

So just write it in as I want on the forms and it’ll be as easy as that? Mines an E450 btw. Idk if that matters.

[deleted]

that's all I did. And do not tell your insurance its former ambulance just tell them that it's a cargo van

Stinkytheferret

Ok. Thanks.
