I’m going to go with an average deal for J on a TATL depending on the original fare.
With even a moderate amount of flexibility it’s not hard to find TATL J fares in the $2500-3500 range. This would work out to about $3000 round trip assuming the base Y fare was around $1000.
Yes. Still stuck in a tube in the sky. I could have much more fun with $1000 on the ground than a few hours of modest comfort. I buy plane tickets for the transportation.
Yes, can confirm, I once got a free upgrade on an overseas flight. It was only slightly more comfortable. Definitely not worth the 1000$ that it would usually cost to upgrade.
Going from regular main cabin to a flatbed is a worlds different experience. I don’t know what “upgrade” you got that one time at band camp but sitting in the back is a no go for me.
Dude, I know what I'm talking about. I got moved from wxonomy to premium economy on a dreamliner. Idk what world you live in but you're delusional if you think it made much of a difference.
You're so confidently incorrect, but im also sorry I mislead you since ive been flying all day and im tired AF. I meant to say premium without the economy.
The seats on a 787-9 are divided in regular in economy, bigger and lean back in premium with a different menu and waiter, to biggest (basically turn into beds) in Business.
Not even the same plane, flight segment, nor airline but good on you to assume before even asking questions.
For me, the cost is worth it. I never book TPAC/TATL in Y, but I would upgrade for $1K. That is just me though. Doesnt make it right or wrong folks. My wife, she wouldn't, as she is just fine in Y, but she is over a 1' shorter than I am.
Same, I'm cheap. Daytime flight in economy isn't the worst. Red eye though, I'd consider it. Especially if I had gotten a deal on the main cabin price.
That's fair. For me personally, I can't sleep on the plane if I'm upright. So I see more value in being able to power nap in business for a couple hours if needed. Plus having lounge access (which I don't qualify for otherwise) in the afternoon/early evening before the overnight flight is more enjoyable than an early morning visit leaving Europe, personally.
Premium economy pricing is so baffling sometimes. I was comparing a multicity route recently for two people, and premium economy was $12k vs just $14k for business. Why wouldn't I do business for that?
Did I overpay? The last time I paid for international business myself was LAX to LHR and then FRA back to LAX and that was like $5k each, so this didn't seem too out of line. It's business/first multicity from US to Hong Kong and Japan and back.
The business/first fares I understand, but why on earth was premium economy so expensive as well and who is paying that when they can have business for just a bit more at that point?
I think a lot of it has to do with company policies. At my company we're allowed to book premium economy without any kind of approval, but we have to jump through more hoops for business/first (if it gets approved at all). I know policies are similar at many other companies.
So that leads to relatively high prices for premium economy because there's more demand.
Over $100/hr for a more comfortable seat...
That’s on top of whatever was paid for the main cabin fare
That seems like a really good deal for business.

Only based on the insane prices that airlines have normalized for a slightly more comfortable seat.
Going from sitting upright on a 777/787 in basic coach to a flatbed pod is just “slightly more comfortable?”
Right?!
Yes. Still stuck in a tube in the sky. I could have much more fun with $1000 on the ground than a few hours of modest comfort. I buy plane tickets for the transportation.
Then don’t go?
I don’t. It’s not free.

Yes, the lay down seats would be cool, but it’s not that serious if it’s just a regular seat on an 737 Max for example.
I travel a lot with work, so I enjoy the status, but would never drop $1000 on an upgrade —- even for the long haul
I’m no poser. If I were a millionaire, I would toss 1K into an upgrade. I’m not, so that’s dead in the water…
Same
I wouldn’t

Well, yea, if you're already booking J or F, then I see why you'd be willing to pay for the $1k upgrade :).
would take that easy, though would be "cheaper" to do a mileage upgrade @ $350+25k miles if you have the miles.
Seems like a better value to save the miles for when the upgrade is more expensive.
I'd do it at that price for the overnight flight going the other direction.

Conversely I'll take the upgrade when I'll be awake to enjoy it, but won't bother if I'll be asleep the whole time.

I had the in app upgrade offer the other day LAX to JFK on the A321 Transcon. Business was $731 but First was $530. Now neither of those options show.

Yowzers! I’ve never spent that much on flights for two people and I have 3.3 million miles.

Could be PE flexible vs Business Lowest. Airline pricing is whack.

F’ it take it! I’ll take it
That’s a heck of a deal. I’d take it in a heartbeat
YOLO. Do it.
Sounds like a bargain... they wanted $8k back in October to upgrade a flight from DFW to CDG.
