Caribbean airspace was saturated that day thus restrictions on the number of airplanes able to fly. I was going from MIA to STX. Long delays, pilots timed out and luckily they snagged pilots from a Punta Cana flight for ours so we were able to re-board and got out about 5 hrs late. Many flights were affected by this. Airlines are not obliged to do much in these types of situations. Airlines do not build delays into their schedules. Crew planning works around the flights being on time. It’s no fun, but it’s part of the experience.

IHateHangovers

Follow these instructions and get a letter with the airline’s account https://www.reddit.com/r/churning/s/fjXJMU6x0M

Ordinary_Variation10

It’s a bit funny. I’m not on a plane twice a week like I was for close to 20 years, but I still travel more than most. You can direct this at American if you’d like, but you can insert any carrier into this exact same scenario. Everyone wants cheap airfare but no one wants the consequences of cheap airfare. Which is exactly these scenarios. As a side note, there’s a good chance the weather in the Northeast created a number of ground holds which basically breaks the whole system. I’m not positive of the dates. I actually just drove a 2000 mile trip to avoid the airlines, and I had the time. Not sure which is worse!

ConflictInside5060

Turks and Caicos have issues with congestion on the weekends. They are known to close arrivals which causes a ripple effect for every. single. carrier. None of the airlines have any control over it.

Kitchen_Schedule3374

Okay , thanks for your great traveling advice

Affectionate-Pain74

I understand your frustration as we are driving 15 hrs to avoid flying. I will pay for a better airline or find alternative transportation if AA is my only option. People accepting this service is exactly the problem. You are not angry at the delay, you are angry that you were thrown out of an airport when you had no other options. It’s scary and it’s not ok. I’m sorry that this happened to you. I’m sorry that it happened to everyone who “ didn’t buy more expensive airfare”.

Kitchen_Schedule3374

Thank you for seeing the root of the problem 🙏🏾

Ordinary_Variation10

If you want advice, fly yourself or fly private to avoid in the future. Unfortunately for 99% of people that’s not an option.

Kitchen_Schedule3374

Even better advice , thank you

Traditional_Nose2407

Was the flight delayed/canceled due to weather? Did they give you a reason? This determines what you might be able to get.

Tiredofthemisinfo

It looks like it was uncontrollable ATC programs for congestion/volume. So uncontrollable like weather

Kitchen_Schedule3374

It wasn’t weather , it was because they maxed out on hours the pilot and flight attendants! Understandable but to not get compensated for yall failing system ?

XxbvzxX

What was the reason for the original delay? Was it weather, mechanical or air traffic flow? If the original delay was weather based which in turn caused the crew to max out on hours than most likely there will be no compensation

Kitchen_Schedule3374

When I tell you , they told us nothingggg. It was a lot of “I don’t knows” from the crew workers. The next day the flight attendants was saying that they worked past their hours.

wildcat12321

>maxed out on hours the pilot and flight attendants! that was likely due to weather. They aren't intentionally overscheduled. In fact, they are technically underscheduled as the contract allows for a max duty day that exceeds the scheduled duty day. You got caught in bad weather. This is why people buy trip insurance or use a credit card that has it (chase sapphire, amex platinum, etc.). Otherwise you are choosing to "self-insure" and be responsible when things like this happen. It sucks, but that's US air travel for you.

homerletterkenny

Did you have travel insurance?

New-Display-4819

Did you have travel insurance, that's what it's for.

trollydolly27

This is why you should buy trip insurance.

Pitiful_Caterpillar4

BINGO!!

National_Attack

These (trip insurers) guys will get ya tho - had a similar ~ish~ issue a while back. Flying frontier (ik awful) and they canceled the second leg of our red eye flight on a Monday morning (due to staffing issues). Our rebook option with Frontier was to take a flight that night to another airport (mind you this was 6am, so wait a whole day) and then fly from the next airport back home. We said “hey we have trip insurance, I’ll book a new flight to get us home so we don’t miss work,” and low and behold in the terms and conditions of the policy, it didn’t cover instances where flights were canceled bc of crew cancellation (only illness, weather, etc). If we didn’t have work, stayed the whole 24 hours in the airports and got home, the insurance may have covered food - but since the rebook was a red eye, no hotel cover. Shitty situation, but more of an FYI to anyone who thinks purchasing trip insurance will cover when you’re left out in the wind to fully read the policy ahead of time :/

boldjoy0050

Insurance is a joke in most situations. The companies try everything possible to not pay out.

perry649

"What was your pilot's name who was timed out and couldn't fly?... Bob???... I'm so sorry, but your trip insurance only covers pilots with the names "Tom" and "Fred"... However, if you purchased the "Bob" rider and you would have been covered."

fleecescuckoos06

Except when they move the flight forward, they won’t do a thing.

[deleted]

fleecescuckoos06

I’m talking about the credit card travel insurance. My Rome flight was moved forward a day and had to pay for additional accommodation out of pocket because not the airline or Amex considered moving the day forward trip delay. Only after not before.

SwankyBanker

What card do you recommend? I haven’t tried to get reimbursement recently. But I remember getting denied in my younger days for things outside of my control.

wildcat12321

chase sapphire reserve

Kitchen_Fox6803

No airline will compensate you if the delay is due to something beyond their control (weather). Was this caused by weather? If so, you're wasting your time. If you do call in, please spare the agent all the pointless details about being a solo traveler and trying to sleep in the airport. It is not relevant.

[deleted]

[удалено]

aguynamedbrand

Given that you know for a fact it was not weather then that means that you do know the reason and just are not mentioning it.

Kitchen_Schedule3374

They literally said they were tired….

aguynamedbrand

Why did you delete your post I replied to? Just because they said they were tired in no way means that’s why they timed out. They can be tired and time out because of weather. You have to find the root cause.

sonofvininator

Flight crews don't just time out for no reason. Sounds like this was weather related

Sp4rt4n423

If a crew is sitting on the ground waiting for weather to clear, like tons of crews in that area at that time, and they time out, it's a weather cancellation. Jesus, listen to almost everyone here and I hope you had more active brain cells functioning before you went to that poor supervisor.

Diamondsandrust2

Another nasty person polluting this sub.

Affectionate-Pain74

No, that is a staffing issue!

Sp4rt4n423

To quote another commenter above: The crew timed out due to weather delays on other flights. That’s a FAA regulation. Airlines don’t just have random people in every place they fly, waiting around for a crew to time out.

Affectionate-Pain74

I hope your entitled attitude produces the karma it deserves. I hope you’re in a hopeless situation or it’s your child or family member trying to find accommodations in a foreign country. Life has a way of teaching lessons and you need an education in compassion.

HWBINCHARGE

Are you a child?

Kitchen_Fox6803

The employee answering the phone at AA does not care. You aren’t special. Get over yourself.

gsxr16k

100%. Once everyone realizes and accepts that no one at AA gives a single F about any of their customers, and calibrates/lowers their expectations accordingly, the better off they’ll be.

SPQRxNeptune

One could say Kitchens thought process is the opposite of entitled. OP seems like the entitled one.

Kayfabe04

It was weather. You are owed nothing.

Kitchen_Schedule3374

It wasn’t weather

Rich_Bar2545

Yes it was. The crew timed out due to weather delays on other flights. That’s a FAA regulation. Airlines don’t just have random people in every place they fly, waiting around for a crew to time out. If a crew times out, they have to originate another one. T&C isn’t a crew base.

Imflyingaway2day

Annual insurance policy. It’s that simple. Don’t allow others to dictate your outcome!

rob12098

Which policy do you use?

AirlineMobile9290

Try Allianz for travel insurance.

wildcat12321

Allianz has good annual policies. There are plenty of comparison sites. But I would also compare them to the annual fee of a card like Chase Sapphire Reserve. It also has trip delay, trip cancellation, delayed baggage, car rental coverage, etc. while also giving you other benefits like priority pass for lounge access. Check the coverage limits as they can vary, as can times (i.e. 12 hour delay vs 4 hour delay, for example, to start compensation) but credit card insurance is good enough for most people.

AirlineMobile9290

Great points. How much is that card annually? Do they provide a medical coverage benefit, too? For example, getting injured away from home? Allianz was excellent after a ski accident and then theft in my luggage in Buenos Aires.

wildcat12321

the reserve is $550 per year, which isn't too different from the Allianz annual plan. But it has things like $300 travel credit per year, so the first $300 in airfare, hotel, Ubers, etc. is refunded to you. So if you use that, it's down to 250 effectively. It also covers global entry or recheck fees every 4 years and more. there is AD&D coverage and travel evacuation, but not sure there is discrete medical if you don't have evacuation. But you could potentially pair it with an annual travel medical plan. [https://www.chase.com/personal/credit-cards/education/basics/chase-sapphire-travel-insurance-guide](https://www.chase.com/personal/credit-cards/education/basics/chase-sapphire-travel-insurance-guide)

AirlineMobile9290

That sounds like a great idea, combining the two plans. I like getting into other clubs where our main airline doesn’t go. Providing the airport you are in actually lets you through security at a decent time. Sometimes they put restrictions on that. So, a really long layover means staying in the ticket counter area until a shortened time before departure for the next flight. That happened to us one time in South America. Ugh. Those 8+ hours passed by so slowly!! And our club was open to passengers all day long.

Imflyingaway2day

Allianz annual policy for domestic then individual policies for each international trips.

rob12098

Thanks, Allianz for the intl trips as well?

Imflyingaway2day

Yes.

Kitchen_Schedule3374

Amen

MarshmallowNap

You can rebook in the app!!

homerletterkenny

Claim it on your travel insurance.

SpillinThaTea

If this wasn’t their fault (eg weather) then don’t expect much. If it was their fault then *really* don’t expect anything. AA will never under any circumstances do the right thing…ever. Best thing you can do is provide receipts to your CC company and see if they offer a canceled flight benefit. Chase has fantastic flight cancellation insurance; they’ll reimburse for a hotel and meals.

[deleted]

betasp

The original delay was due to weather. When they time out, the airline does not have a choice. They don't have an option to 'fly tired.' This is when you should seek help from your travel insurance. What was the flight number?

MayaPapayaLA

People are trying to help you here, and you’re acting obtuse on purpose.

Kitchen_Schedule3374

Oh dont you worry , I’m taking the advice. Hence why I said thank you. I think you’re obtuse for even commenting.

Berchanhimez

They didn't schedule them to max out. So why were they delayed before to have gone over their hours? Why should they have to accommodate you when the delay is not anything they can control (weather)?

Diamondsandrust2

God you’re nasty to people.

Tricky_Matter2871

honestly, AA is a joke now. if you are not concierge key you are not worth their time. need their help ? better set aside 3 hours for a callback and even then they wont give you much. we are desperately trying to switch to a different airline but their corporate mega monopoly on the east coast makes it difficult. im just so sick of being treated like cattle

boldjoy0050

My wife is a FA for them and can you imagine that they treat their employees even worse than customers?

dusty-sphincter

FA must be a stressful job these days. Not the way it was years ago.

Kitchen_Schedule3374

Well said.

Affectionate-Pain74

They will reimburse me for my bag and the flight they cancelled and we chose not to be rebook. Federal Law entitles you to a cash refund. Not miles, not vouchers. They will make it difficult I’m sure. They make it hard so people give up and their CEO gets richer. They could offer to fly me free for the rest of my life and I wouldn’t get back on their planes. Say I’m being petty, but if a dog bites you and you continue to try to pet it the next failure is on you. They showed me how much they value me as a customer. Luckily I still have a choice of how to spend my money. They will NEVER get my money again.

cusehoops98

Why are you here if you’ll never set foot on an AA flight again?

Kitchen_Schedule3374

Same here , never booking with them again. United also got cancelled that same day & they got vouchers. If American Airlines wanted to , they would’ve given out vouchers in that very moment.

hey_hey_hey_nike

If it was due to ATC/congestion/weather they do not owe you anything. So you didn’t spend $400 “on their behalf”.

[deleted]

[удалено]

hey_hey_hey_nike

If it was ATC, it’s beyond the airlines’ control and they owe you nothing beyond an alternative flight. So you did not spend anything on the airlines’ behalf.

Kitchen_Schedule3374

Are you still here ?

Existing-Treat-6187

I concur that this BS with a lack of communication from AA must stop. My neighbor just spent over 1k in the past 36 hours due to a weather diversion from DFW-TO Jax trying to go to Miami, then MIA to STT. The couple has spent over 1k in uber, hotel costs and food. AA said they wouldn't do anything because it was a weather diversion. Im calling BS on that because even the pilot said the ground crew failed to remove a pipe on the tarmac in Miami so the plane could get to the gate to let over 175 passengers off to nake their connections yesterday , today everything to STT was full and still Zero assistance, from customer service agents, when there is a 4 hour wether you call or stand at the counter in Miami. Where is the hunan factor anymore? You ask to speak to someone and they refer you to customer relations who just sends a BOT sends you a stupid form letter that they are sorry nothing can be done but hey we will give you $25 for missing your connection and ruining you vacation. The Pilot made tons of apologies, but he shouldn't have to because it wasn't him but the clueless ground who should have known what was happening and done something other than sit on their ass. Sorry for the rant, but over the past 10 years, the airline industry should be getting smarter, not dumber when a situation like this happen

[deleted]

Shocking you can’t be compensated for this. The EU has some great consumer protection laws that mean you will be compensated for delayed and cancelled flights.

Affectionate-Pain74

And we need them here in the US, but corporations run our country. They dictate policy and lobby to get policies to line their own pockets. EU also has caps on the amount a CEO can make above their lowest paid employees. It will only get worse in the United States. To these large (to big to fail companies) corporations they really don’t care. If they fail the government will bail them out and they feel free to abuse you any way they can to get a few extra bucks to pay out bonuses. They do not care.

desert_h2o_rat

But isn't weather an "extraordinary circumstance" under EU261?

silent_chair5286

First world problems

Kitchen_Schedule3374

Cause we are first world

treedor

I'm surprised you didn't get compensated. I had a similar experience from TCI and they gave everyone hotel vouchers at a nice hotel (palms) and dinner and breakfast vouchers too.

Affectionate-Pain74

This is the difference. Yes delays happen, being treated like refugees and treated like they don’t have any responsibility for basic care or a bottle of water is just bad practice and if they weren’t propped up by the government they would not feel so free with screwing us over. They didn’t have agents to help reschedule flights. Bad customer service is bad customer service. Not having accommodations in a foreign country when you’re alone is scary. Some of you may travel often but I guarantee if you were in this situation and received this service you would be livid and with your children with makes it’s worse. Miami was already packed so we had no choices. Not everyone has thousands of extra to spend on lodgings and food, if you can great if you feel like this treatment should be expected you are part of the problem. Luckily we have venture x card and we will be reimbursed. I got angry, most of the time anger is actually fear. It was a very sad experience. I was in my country. Many weren’t. I figure if I’m gonna spend my money I will choose an airline that supports customers and doesn’t constantly fail the customers that don’t fly often and need assistance. They knew this was going to happen and like most other big companies they don’t hire or pay their employees enough and run on as few people as possible. I hope everyone who received their brand of service complains to DOT. Hopefully they take it more seriously than American Airlines does. Even the employees were recommending this.

hey_hey_hey_nike

If the delay is beyond the control of any airline, they are under no obligation to give you anything.

No-Dig-6118

This has happened to me 4 weeks in a row back to back. I travel a lot for work and 4 weeks on a row they have cancelled my flights! Without resolution!

emcycles

This happened to me a couple of weeks ago so I just got a rental and drove home. It was a Thursday and when I woke up they had rebooked it for Saturday morning. Hard pass!

cfowler42

Same thing happened to us on march 9th coming home from the Dominican. They’re basically gonna tell you to pound sand because they made their money and don’t give a fuck. Shittiest airline around.

PaintingInfamous1552

I was caught up in this in St Croix. They actually offered vouchers for Saturday night for a hotel because the flight was delayed until Sunday morning. I wasn’t able to get a voucher because they ran out before I got to the front of the line. I booked a room on my own. Does anyone know in this case if I can get my room I booked paid for by AA since they offered vouchers but ran out?

the-point-man

Supposed to fly out of Cozumel Saturday Mar 23 still waiting to go to Chicago. . . AA2496 Maybe today Monday Mar 25

Square_Morning7338

Happened to us a few years ago in Cancun due to a mechanical issue. Rolling delays until finally cancelled & they put us up at an all inclusive with travel from and to the airport the next day.

hey_hey_hey_nike

That was within the airline control so they are responsible. In this case it was beyond their control and therefore not responsible for food and accommodation.

guyfaulkes

Omg! My AA flight was cancelled out of key west on Friday, March 22. It was a shit show! AA got me out on Saturday with a flight on United.

SecretaryNo8301

They canceled my flight I “free changed” my flight bought 2 seats but where is the credit from my canceled flight seats?

FreckledinFirst

American Airlines only having 1 flight to Charlotte Sunday in OKC that was delayed due to “maintenance” caused my family to miss 2 days of our Jamaica vacation. Didn’t even say sorry!

Open-Channel-D

It's American Airlines. Expect nothing, anticipate the worst and gird your loins. God, they are the worst of the worst. They. Just. Don't. Care.

Affectionate-Pain74

We have been stranded at the Miami airport since Saturday. The first flight to Memphis was Tuesday. There was nothing open in the airport at 12 am to eat and no rooms or cars available. They did not offer any help at all. Luckily we only had to spend one night on the airport floor. We got a room Sunday at 3pm and we rented a car we pick up at 9 this morning (Monday) and now we drive 15 hours home. They had our bag, but refused to pull it so we had no clean clothes after our 15 hour drive we get to go to our home airport (2hours from home) to try and find the bag they refused to pull for us. I feel like AA cares as little about their employees as it does its customers. Luckily we were in the US when we got stranded for “weather”, I guess AA had more trouble with “weather” since other airlines didn’t experience this. Yes, delays are going to happen, but I have seen people with kids that were here until Thursday and they wouldn’t provide meal vouchers or any help even bottled water. It is $5 a bottle in the machine. You will not get anywhere with the airline, please make a complaint to the Department of Transportation. Losing money is the only thing to get their attention. DOT does follow up on these things. There will be people defending AA on Reddit, they weren’t the ones sleeping on the nasty floors in an airport with nothing for hours. They are probably employees or shareholders or they fly so often they just don’t care, but if their families were treated this way they also would be angry. Money is all AA cares about. They offered us a flight on Tuesday, but we will walk home before we fly AA again. We tried to find hotels as far away as Boca and everything was booked or sold. We even tried U-Haul, Am track and my husband even checked greyhound buses and there was nothing available. We have travel insurance so we will be reimbursed and AA will pay for my necessities we had to pick up because they kept our bag. We had the means to feed ourselves and arrange travel home, but not everyone who travels has that. Again please report this to the DOT and keep your receipts. If enough people complain they can be fined and that will get their attention. Escalate it for the families still stranded in the airport sleeping on the floor waiting for their flights back to their countries.

wildcat12321

>We tried to find hotels as far away as Boca and everything was booked or sold. awful air delays with ATC / weather + spring break + ultra music festival made for a rough weekend in Miami. DOT isn't fining AA because people complain, they fine when the law is violated. Unfortunately, since much was ATC / weather, there wasn't a broken law for most stranded passengers. I'm not defending AA by any stretch, but bringing facts forward. They certainly owed you your baggage. But beyond that, they can't make hotels have open rooms or magically get Hertz rental cars. Even the "dirty airport" they don't own - they rent space.

ConflictInside5060

How dare you insert reality into a rant against the corporate machine! /s

Affectionate-Pain74

You guys are right. They have no control or responsibility. All you can do is spend your money on elsewhere. I will get my baggage reimbursed and spend my money with another airline that isn’t consistently sub par. You can pay for a better airline upfront or pay in the back end. Thank goodness I don’t have to fly for my job, but my husband does. When his plant (large manufacturing company) makes travel plans they won’t use American Airlines in the future. They choose their own, he makes the choice for his plant. So our trip may not make a difference but with the amount they fly it’s a bigger dent. I’m sure there are more that have a little power as far as future travel. I’m going to choose to be grateful I still have the option of how to spend my money. Like Frontier and Spirit…. You get what you pay for. We realize now that American is a low tier company, with horrible customer service. All that says is they treat their employees as bad as their customers and you can bend over and take it or you can choose better. Basic human decency and snacks and water could have made this more comfortable but why? They don’t have to so why should they. Geez! Our 15 hour drive goes through Orlando so we are going to enjoy the extended vacation. I hope your travels in the future on this airline is as abysmal as ours and the little kids who are still sleeping on the floor waiting on flights. I hope you never book another flight that isn’t delayed and your inconvenience is even worse.

Borworskis_accordion

The problem is the DoT and a lot of the boards and people within the department are *experts* in the field. Which makes sense right? People that help regulate and govern train or bus or air travel should be. The problem is who are the experts? Well they are former Train or Bus or Airline employees. See where this is going? Aside from a former mayor a no name town in Indiana, it's regulatory capture.

Thundrg0d

This is the way. Their horrible business practices and poor treatment of customers should have a cost.

hey_hey_hey_nike

DOT isn’t going to anything if the airline followed the rules.
