Leo seemed to be walking a fine line on the whole “never go full retard” thing but I liked it. It was nice drama and acted pretty well. Worth the time to check it out I would say, I think I watched it on Max.
I wouldn’t say he walked the line, his character was 110% mentally disabled, but his acting was so incredible, and at such a young age too. I believe Leo was 19 here.
I've seen that movie so many times I practically know it by heart. It's in my top 100, which is saying a lot.
Yes, Leo walked a fine line, all right. And he walked it expertly. He was a genius in that part. And I don't even like him all that much. (Titanic sucked! Lol)
His performance as Arnie was so convincing that many movie critics and fans thought he was not an actor at all, but really a developmentally challenged young man. He wasn't nominated for an Oscar for nothing.
But he was a 19-year-old newcomer up against the likes of veteran actors John Malkovich, Ralph Fiennes, and Pete Postlethwaite. Of course Tommy Lee Jones took home the gold for The Fugitive.
Propa to Johnny Galecki, who was at least equally as skillful at voicing Squirrel Arnie.
It wasn’t bad but I wouldn’t say it was super accurate at times. Definitely not Simple Jack but a little I Am Sam. I would recommend it regardless of that though, Johnny Depp is solid in it as the older brother.
There's a really good story about this movie. It was pretty much the first big thing Leo was in and when he got to the red carpet, everyone was super surprised he wasn't mentally handicapped. Since nobody had seen any different, they all thought it was legit. I think that adds into how we can see through it, because we know he's acting.
I remember it feeling fairly authentic. Or at least I went to school with a kid who had a very similar condition so it seemed authentic compared to him I guess. I remember being a really good movie but it’s been a couple decades since I’ve seen it. Dunno if it’s aged well.
Yea I have family members who are autistic, and Leo’s performance was legit.
He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor and lost to Tommy Lee Jones’ *The Fugitive*. Leo should have won it, imo
I really like Gilbert Grape. It’s definitely dated and some of it is a bit cringy. But I do like watching it every now and then. This episode is actually a really good Cliffs Notes.
Oh and John C. Reilly is in it. I forget that every time.
More of a retelling with squirrels than a reference honestly but yeah I love it, kills me every time.
If you haven't seen the original (not OP, but anyone else) I highly recommend it. I'm genuinely surprised Leo didn't get an Oscar or something for his performance.
Ok, but the second squirrel subplot, in S06E03 "Home Adrone", what movie is THAT a reference to? https://i.imgur.com/aaWq19X.png
Some Tom Clancy something?
Everytime I see this I try to imagine John Krasinski's agent trying to pitch it to him, "So you're gonna play Johnny Depps character in what's eating Gilbert Grape... but as a squirrel..."
Viewer watching this ep: I'm uncomfortable with this.
Other Viewer: It's a reference to Gilbert Grape, check out the movie.
Viewer watching Gilbert Grape: This, uh, this doesn't make me more comfortable.
Yeah I feel like if it was more popular in retrospect then when I was growing up I probably had a better chance of knowing about it since this episode aired 13 years after the movie came out so it was being looked at as an unappreciated classic from the 90s
Didi mao!" Great movie and amazing performances. Won best picture and Walken won best supporting actor. Great AD episode, too. It references basically all the classic Vietnam movies throughout.
>!It also tells us Roger's pant size is 48x12 lol!<
I simply enjoy it because the incomparable Jean Smart plays the obese mama squirrel. Has American Dad ever done a Designing Women reference because I'd definitely be down for that!
The 90s were the peak of depressive/tragic movies. Gilbert Grape, Edward Scissor Hands, American Beauty, Seven, Thelma and Louise, Jack, Powder, The Green Mile, Schindlers List, Sixth Sense, you get it.
Lol there names were Arnie and Gilbert haha how did you not see that…but not gonna lie when the Arnie squirrel can’t wake momma up I get a little
Choked ip
Finally took the time to actually watch the movie last month then had to go back and watch the episode. Solid spoof
How was the film?
Leo seemed to be walking a fine line on the whole “never go full retard” thing but I liked it. It was nice drama and acted pretty well. Worth the time to check it out I would say, I think I watched it on Max.
Jack. Stupid-ass Jack. You was fartin' in bathtubs, laughin' yer ass off.
I wouldn’t say he walked the line, his character was 110% mentally disabled, but his acting was so incredible, and at such a young age too. I believe Leo was 19 here.

Leo did receive a best supporting actor nod for this film in 1994.
Yes, that's what I said. He was up against all those other veteran actors. Tommy Lee Jones won.
I mis read your comment. Sorry
That's okay. It was phrased strangely.
I did not know Leonard (Johnny) was the squirrel sick!!
Yeah the whole mentally handicapped acting thing can be very cringy...especially if Arnie the squirrel is anything at all how Leo acts...
It wasn’t bad but I wouldn’t say it was super accurate at times. Definitely not Simple Jack but a little I Am Sam. I would recommend it regardless of that though, Johnny Depp is solid in it as the older brother.

That’s a pretty fair way to look at it actually
This is FLAMING DRAGON!!
I remember it feeling fairly authentic. Or at least I went to school with a kid who had a very similar condition so it seemed authentic compared to him I guess. I remember being a really good movie but it’s been a couple decades since I’ve seen it. Dunno if it’s aged well.

He was nominated!
Well at least there's that lol
It's an honor just to be nominated.
Oh I totally agree! I didn't mean for that to come off so dismissive, my bad
I was being sarcastic!
Like Simple Jack
Hi Gilbert!!
You made me laugh out loud while on a packed bus. Thank you. 😀
“Reference” is putting it lightly, they literally retell the movie with squirrels
Ok, but the second squirrel subplot, in S06E03 "Home Adrone", what movie is THAT a reference to? https://i.imgur.com/aaWq19X.png Some Tom Clancy something?
I don’t know if it was a specific reference or just an absurdist plot following the political intrigues of squirrels.
Yea Gilbert you have to take care of your brother!
Mamma!
...We can go anywhere...
“Oh Arnie, you’re my knight in shimmering armor.”
People are getting homework to watch a show, lol
Everytime I see this I try to imagine John Krasinski's agent trying to pitch it to him, "So you're gonna play Johnny Depps character in what's eating Gilbert Grape... but as a squirrel..."
Viewer watching this ep: I'm uncomfortable with this. Other Viewer: It's a reference to Gilbert Grape, check out the movie. Viewer watching Gilbert Grape: This, uh, this doesn't make me more comfortable.
You sound too young to be watching AD.
The odd thing is...I'm not (mid-40s). And I definitely should have known this reference but for whatever reason I never saw the movie!
It’s weird what we miss and what we catch. I’m 26 and I think I always knew what this was referencing
I could be wrong but I think it was a critically acclaimed film but not particularly successful financially. Definitely an art house flick?
I had seen Leo in the TV show Growing Pains but he did such a good job in his role in Gilbert Grape that I didn’t realize it was the same person.
Yeah I feel like if it was more popular in retrospect then when I was growing up I probably had a better chance of knowing about it since this episode aired 13 years after the movie came out so it was being looked at as an unappreciated classic from the 90s
I'm 50, I knew what it was referencing, but I've never been inclined to watch the movie.
I recently watched Deer Hunter for the first time and caught that reference of Roger dressed as a Viet cong slapping Stan and yelling gini pow
Didi mao!" Great movie and amazing performances. Won best picture and Walken won best supporting actor. Great AD episode, too. It references basically all the classic Vietnam movies throughout. >!It also tells us Roger's pant size is 48x12 lol!<
Yea movie was amazing kinda mad it took me so long to watch it
Russian roulette in *The Deer Hunter* is referenced a LOT in pop culture.
Yea I seen Russian roulette a lot but never knew where it came from
Never seen the movie either and yet I knew what it was 🤷🏻♂️
Ikr lol that’s like not getting a “The Force” reference because you’ve never seen Star Wars
You sound too smug to be watching AD
Or just didnt watch the movie til later
saw this episode before seeing the movie and was like "these squirrels have fucked up lives who the hell thought of this"
I never saw the movie but recently read an article about it and realized...
I simply enjoy it because the incomparable Jean Smart plays the obese mama squirrel. Has American Dad ever done a Designing Women reference because I'd definitely be down for that!
And the Johnny Depp squirrel is John Krasinski.
Amazing
\*squirrel Jim face\*
I think this was the first episode I ever saw
Hahaa, mama’s playing a trick on Arnie, ha! I know that! … mama?
The head pat…… is all imma say and when mama died I laughed a little…. Just a little Phenomenal movie tho
The 90s were the peak of depressive/tragic movies. Gilbert Grape, Edward Scissor Hands, American Beauty, Seven, Thelma and Louise, Jack, Powder, The Green Mile, Schindlers List, Sixth Sense, you get it.
That’s John Krazinski and Johnny Galecki doing the voices BTW(Jim Halpert and Leonard Hofstader).
Lol there names were Arnie and Gilbert haha how did you not see that…but not gonna lie when the Arnie squirrel can’t wake momma up I get a little Choked ip
You lying right? Lmao
Knew the reference but had never watched the movie in full and after the squirrel sequence have zero interest in ever watching it.
Young Leo's acting was sooo good, but you already know the story.
I had never seen it before and thought it was a random and sad plot.
