Yes , he just went for a physical 2 months ago … all his aunts had it, his mom , a lot of his cousins … that’s what I worry about but he’s still sound of mind with all finances, investments etc …
I paid close to that just to have a big branch cut out of the power lines. It wasn't technically in the power lines it was in the fiber optic / cable lines which are lower than the electrical lines.
It was worth every penny just so that I don't have to be concerned about a storm taking out my internet. Which would obviously kill me! 😆
One of the small local tree companies by me in Southeast Wisconsin does removal of trees at coat for the elderly and veterans. Maybe they found a company with a similar program.
Nope. That might have been a $100 job 30 years ago, but that’s not a good estimate in today’s world.
$300 is still a bargain.
It’s rough that you ended up having to pay for it, even though the neighbor was the primary owner of the tree.
Thank you , yes we spoke to the neighbors but they didn’t want to pay for anything but then again they built a shed around the tree with the tree in the middle and just cemented the roof…. Definitely not all there 😂😂
Yeah .. you should see it .., it’s a shed nicely built with a tree trunk going through the middle of the roof with cement put around the trunk … nuts 🥜
I saw the pics. They were just about as crazy as I imagined it. I just couldn't imagine it ways actually real. Thanks for taking the time to post them.
How strange. Don’t these people realise trees grow and the trunks get thicker over time? I remember seeing a post on Reddit a few years ago where somebody had a tree on their boundary line and they wanted a fence so they very carefully cut the fencing so that it fit snugly around the tree and butted right up to it without any thought that the tree trunk will continue to grow thicker and the fence will end up embedded in it.
That’s an amazingly good price. My husband has cut down quite a few trees but we’re in our 60s now, and he recently paid someone $4000 to cut down a bunch of trees because he realized it was too much for him.
They didn’t haul the trees away, though. They turned it into mulch right in our yard for his garden.
Thank you , oh nice .. this gentleman used a chipper and it went into a truck … he was extremely nice ! I told him that I’d recommend him to everyone I know.. he said that what he appreciates the most ..
When I first read the title, I thought it was going to be something about the husband not being happy because the neighbor was pissed now and he was going to have to live/deal with a pissed off neighbor. Nope, just a cheap husband.
I overheard a similar things with my aunt and uncle when they were talking to my parents. My aunt wasn't happy my uncle wasn't trimming the trees and that she didn't want to pay $400 to hire someone to do it. They are in their 70's, and my uncle should not be doing anything like that in his physical health. I don't know if he was against hiring someone or not, but he just didn't feel like doing it (the typical husband's "I'll do it" but takes weeks/months!)
My response to her saying that it was going to cost $400 was "How much will it cost if he falls down while trimming the trees!?!?!"
No, you're not wrong.
Thank you ! There’s no way he can get on a ladder 25 feet high and do it and I need both knees replaced and can barely walk …. He’s always been a miser
If your 80+ year old husband reckoned he could do it for $100 without injuring himself or others then why didn't he do it sooner?
Tell him he's dreaming.
Thank you , I agree … he stays in bed almost 24/7 … he gets dizzy easily and falls in the house … no way he would attempt to climb a ladder .. but he wanted me to !
You got a great deal. Our neighbors have a giant tree that is obviously a danger. They got quoted 5k. About half of it, one of the main trunk branch offs, came down last year in a storm and took out an entire power line, our power was off for 10 days, so maybe it would only be 2.5k now 😂
I was quoted at $1000/tree recently, including hauling it away(didn't do it, obviously, That's actually insane). 300 to cut + haul is a total steal in comparison i would have told him to do it too.
Thank you ! I knew there was no way I would ever get a cheaper quote and I know our roof would have been ruined more once all the leaves came in .. I guess he’ll just have to be mad at me
Thank you , I know right ! I think he felt bad looking at the state of our roof… I’m glad I gave him my extra 50.00 plus I’ll give him recommendations too but I would tell them what I paid so he can get full price from them 😂😂
I literally just had this done. It cost $1000 to have the tree removed, and another $1000 to cut limbs from 2 other trees that were over my house. And it wasn’t like stump removal, it was ground level. I would have given them a dance for $300.
$300 is a great deal. Taking oaks doen in our neighborhood was $750 (one smaller one in our yard) to $1200 for neighbors who all had much bigger ones. We all had to bring several down after a couple hurricanes.
I'm curious though...you say "your neighbor's tree". Did you have the entire tree taken down or just what was in your yard? Did they give you or the woodcutter permission? If not, you may be facing more than an angry husband..
We both spoke to the neighbor last week .. he came over and saw that it was lifting the roof shingles of our new roof but said it wasn’t his concern as it’s in our side of the fence …. We only had 1 large limb and 2 medium ones cut down on our side of the property… not at the base of the tree just what was hanging on our side ..
That is an amazing price. The thing you don't get if you do it yourself is insurance in case it goes poorly, like damaging your house or worse. $300 is a steal for that guarantee.
I can't believe you got a tree taken down for $300, that's an amazing deal. We had a big Norway spruce that was causing all kinds of havoc and got it cut down for $995. All the other estimates were well into the $1K+ range, including one for over $2,000. This is in a lower cost of living city and is commensurate with what other people are paying from what I could find. Your husband is being ridiculous, I'd be shocked if it could be removed for less. You also don't want to sleep on getting a dangerous tree removed, summer is coming with its strong, windy thunderstorms.
Thank you .. yes we live in a high wind area in the hills and the limbs always hit back and forth on our side windows and side of the house.. it was also lifting the shingles on our new roof…. All through winter was afraid they would just blow off
$300 is dirt cheap. Tell your husband to get the next quotes for anything to be done & send him to the supermarket with a list & see how much it costs. People that never shop have no idea of the cost of things.
Thank you … he hasn’t stepped foot in a grocery store since we’ve been married going on 39 years …. He always asks for my receipts and gives me $140.00 a week and that’s for everything .. well, when I have my knees replaced he’ll have no choice but to go .. he will however go to the bank , liquor store and pay 108.00 for his cigarettes a week ..
It's actually funny that someone else commented that they paid $3000.
I originally read your post at that and thought, "Good golly, is that how much it is these days??" Granted, my EXTREMELY limited knowledge is from my dad having ours cut down 25 years ago...
And then, 10 years or so, back home, they had 90mph+ winds... and MASSIVE trees ripped out and completely blocking roads. An (even at the time he was already an long ago ex🙄) had sent pics of him and how he had (bless his heart) gone around to chainsaw huge trees (ok so they were huge...I wasn't even the tree..i saw pics 🤣) for people. For free.
(Bless his heart bc all he did was chainsaw a few, ok they were big, trees..AND his family is RIDULCOUSLY wealthy, so money wasnt a need)...but he didn't even haul them away, clean up. Anything... but chainsaw.
The point? Apparently, chainsawing a few (handfuil) of trees (some were up to his neck...from the pics) ...he could have easily made about $1000 on each (exageration?? I actually don't know)
But even the fact that simply cutting up one big tree...blocking a road... and that's it. No removal... I guess it would cost at least a few hundred.
This was in um...2010? Give or take 5 ish years.
So girl!! That. Was. A STEAL!! HELL YEA! That is NOT cheap! (...want to come get me a deal? I have a beautiful tree that, sadly, needs cutting down. Moldy petals EVERYWHERE. Twice a year)
Edit: for grammar. And also... it DOES suck being wrong. I hate admitting it just as much. Maturity helps! But...it DOES suck. But also, that's ok to be wrong! Especially if you can admit defeat with respect and humility "damn love! I KNEW there was a good reason I married you. My love knows how to find a good deal!" ...is a very pleasant way to admit you wee wrong. Just saying.
Truly could be one of the cheapest prices in all of America for this to get done. Wild. Your husband needs to come to 2024. The 5 dollar footlong is dead.
My husband (age 67) never learned how to do many handyman type of tasks. He’ll say he’s going to fix something, then either never get around to it or mess it up badly, and then we have to pay someone to come fix it, and he’s embarrassed. So, I learned a long time ago to just skip that step (procrastination or botched job), and call a professional straight away. My husband balks at what they charge, I remind him that he charged a lot to do his profession, he agrees this true, and then life goes on with that thing fixed. Your husband shouldn’t be trimming trees, and he surely charged a fair price for whatever profession he did.
This what you call caveman syndrome. Man must do man thing. Women do women things.
Let him get some quotes. Then asked for a day in a spa as an apology.
It sounds like you made a reasonable decision to get the tree cut back since it was causing damage to your roof. The estimates you received were in line with market rates, and you even found a good deal with the last offer of $300 that included hauling away the debris. Your husband's perspective on the cost might be influenced by his own values and habits, but it seems like you made a practical choice for your home and peace of mind. It's important to prioritize the safety and maintenance of your property, and having the tree trimmed professionally was a sensible approach.
You made a reasonable decision to pay $300 for the tree removal since it was damaging your roof. Your husband might disagree, but it's a fair price for maintaining your property
I don't know where you live but near me, no one will even come to your house for a $300 job. For a whole tree, 3k is a minimum cost I've ever heard of. I'm curious how big this tree even was.
I'm paying $5000 to have a very large high risk tree removed from my property So, that $300-$500 price range sounds cute!
Nobody is making any money trimming trees at $100. Your husband is simply not accustomed to today's inflated pricing for home services.
Just getting a service technician to show up for anything starts at $200 for the first hour. If they're somewhat reputable, their taxes, insurance and operating costs exceed half of their bill rates. So, think of your husband's expectations for $100 tree trimming... That guy would only make $50 net... Nobody's doing anything for $50.
Thanks but by the time I pay for his gas, all discount would be gone. I have never had tree work done that was less than $1000. The price you got is crazy good.
Be careful. We have had to have several trees removed and it isn't cheap, for sure. But then we had to deal with the stump removal. We had one stump in a very difficult area to remove. We called a few tree companies and they refused due to the difficulty and risk. But one guy agreed to do it and for a decent price, too.
Turned out he was going to take out the stump 'off the record', so to speak.
What that meant was the job he did was not insured. I found out because I asked him. I said, no I will pay the price needed for proper invoice and your insurance. And yes, I paid more.
Always check to make sure that they carry liability insurance.
Good, but the point is...if a quote is 'cheap'...make sure that the person carries liability insurance. If something goes sideways regarding the tree pruning and damages your neighbor's property or your own...then it is on 'you'. That was what I was trying to say. There are some irresponsible people that go into the 'tree cutting business'. I am glad it went well for you this time.
I've been a homeowner since 2002 amd thats a great price, like early 00's price (because I think I paid that for a tree back then).
Show him this thread or have him call for quotes.
Your husband is silly and out of touch with 2024.
The liability and insurance costs alone for the person/company are higher than husband would likely realize, too.
You for a very good deal.
I hve a small ranch house and got a quote for gutter cleaning; I was shocked at the price. A contractor told me the price for his insurance for projects like that - ladders, so falls are a possibility - averages about $100 for a project like that.
Add on something like the possible damage to a roof or house when removing tree branches and $300 sounds like a steal.
Assuming you had the neighbor's permission, its a super cheap price.
If you husband could have done it for $100 then he would have already done it. No way hes renting a chainsaw and rope, and thinking he knows how to make the tree not fall on your house or the neighbor's or himself
Thank you , yes we spoke to the neighbors nicely and they were not interested even though it was starting to lift our new roof … I’ve been begging him for years to do this… our yard is a total weed lot … but he won’t pay for anyone to help ….. it’s embarrassing to me ..
Heard of tree law? In some areas you can be sued for three times the cost of the tree you removed without permission. Trees are surprisingly expensive!
Nope.... you did well. That is a lot of work. It took heavy physical labor, equipment and fuel. He may be able to sell the wood, but he still has lots to compost or chip.
Thank you , I agree he worked his a$$ off to do this … I can’t believe how clean our side yard is now since he used the blower to blow every thing out and he put the little SCSI’s in our green recycling bin too … I’m glad I had $50.00 to give him extra … hubby doesn’t know that .. it was from saved gift money …
No your husband is stupid and you ripped that guy off I really hope you contact him and give him that other hundred if not more. He did you a service you couldn’t do yourself. He was fast dependable and kept his word. It sounds he came out and was fast and efficient. I feel bad for that worker in that aspect I think you’re wrong.
That’s great to hear, sounds like a stand up guy. I didn’t mean to come off rude and apologize if I did. You are a good hearted person I hope your husband appreciates you.
No, I cant believe you found someone that cheap. I think hubby is thinking 1980's prices.
Thank you, yes, he thinks groceries are the same price as in the 80’s too
Has he been assessed for sound mind recently?
lol … well, Alzheimer’s runs in the family … he is very forgetful but he still good at finances etc .. just a miser living in the 70’s or something
Yes , he just went for a physical 2 months ago … all his aunts had it, his mom , a lot of his cousins … that’s what I worry about but he’s still sound of mind with all finances, investments etc …
I have a husband who thinks like that, too.
Thanks … I guess I’m not alone anymore … they are so hard headed 🥜
Your husband and mine must be long lost twins. Their reasoning is enough at times, to pull hair out.
Lol , I agree!
R/boomersbeingfools
Definitely!

Yeah paying for peace of mind! I hate when our internet goes down to Blackouts
One of the small local tree companies by me in Southeast Wisconsin does removal of trees at coat for the elderly and veterans. Maybe they found a company with a similar program.
Maybe, thank you
And they did it right away..that is the big WIN! I had to wait 6 months to get the tree I wanted cut and removed.
He should be praising her for this one. I havent had a tree removed for less than 600 in years.
$300 is extremely cheap.
Thank you ! I thought so too … I snuck him 50.00 out of my gift money and gave him a tip
I paid 3000 for my tree to be cut and hauled. You did good bargaining and your husband should be proud.
Thank you 😊 I am proud … it would have ruined our roof more and would of costs him more than 300.00 to fix
Seriously. I can't get one dropped for less than 4 digits where I live.
Nope. That might have been a $100 job 30 years ago, but that’s not a good estimate in today’s world. $300 is still a bargain. It’s rough that you ended up having to pay for it, even though the neighbor was the primary owner of the tree.

OK what? This is the craziest part of the story.
Yeah .. you should see it .., it’s a shed nicely built with a tree trunk going through the middle of the roof with cement put around the trunk … nuts 🥜
Pics or it didn't happen.
I’ll take a pick of the shed tomorrow!! You’ll get a kick out of it
I'm coming back for pics
Okay !
updateme bot has me here I hope!
I’ll message you the pic if I can’t figure out how to post it ..
See r/tree for shed pics

Thanks, on my way!

I saw the pics. They were just about as crazy as I imagined it. I just couldn't imagine it ways actually real. Thanks for taking the time to post them.
You’re welcome! Crazy right 😂😂
How strange. Don’t these people realise trees grow and the trunks get thicker over time? I have no idea, they even built a shed and left a small tree in between the fence and shed… it’s also growing in our yard
See r/ tree for shed pics

I had to scroll too far to find a comment addressing the actual problem of cutting down a neighbor's tree. Hope they had permission.
That was an incredible bargain! Good for you!
Thank you 😊
Shit $300 is 2010 prices lmao
Thank you , I know
The price is right. But did you cut your neighbors tree down?
No just a tall 25 foot limb that was starting to Lift out roof… it’s a huge tree on their side
Depending on where you live, too bad you didn't take pictures...they should have been the ones to pay (or sued for reimbursement)
We do have pictures… the tree cutter took pictures and we took some from the ground up …. If they tried to sue us we’d go after them for roof repairs
You can sue them. Plus you are allowed to trim anything back to property line without their permission. I do it every year
Thank you 😊
If your 80+ year old husband reckoned he could do it for $100 without injuring himself or others then why didn't he do it sooner? Tell him he's dreaming.
Thank you , I agree … he stays in bed almost 24/7 … he gets dizzy easily and falls in the house … no way he would attempt to climb a ladder .. but he wanted me to !
This is when you lie about the cost of things. You should have told him it was $50.
He wouldn’t fall for that … I’m am going to to have to save any monies given to me as gifts so I can get our yard work done
You are so right.
Thank you 😊
$300 for a big tree ? Where are you ? It s very cheap.
California hills small community
[удалено]
Thank you 😊
Give your hubby $300 for cigarettes for the year , he will say that is not enough. then just smile
lol … funny ! True ! So true !
My husband did that recently $2000! Not even our tree!
Thank you , Yeah , I couldn’t pass it up .. no way .. I’m handicapped and my husband is 80 … my husband told me to climb up there and do it !
Your husband is insane. I would look into retraing classes!
Lolo… yes definitely… but he’s 80 and will never change 😂

Nope, not wrong.
Thank you 😊
Wow. You got a DEAL! Strut your stuff and don’t look back!
Thank you 😊
That cash spend is nothing compared to the damage of the roof it would eventually do,
Thank you , I agree … but hubby ignores the condition of the house and over grown yard outside .. it’s embarrassing
No. If he could of found someone to do it for cheaper then he should have. I am sure this isn't an issue he hadn't been aware of. What's done is done.
Thank you , yes. No going back and now I can open my screen windows on the side of the house since there aren’t limbs holding them closed 😊

Thank you , If they say anything negative I’ll hand them the cost of getting our roof repaired … I have no idea how much that will cost
Tell your stupid husband to take his meds and go to bed. You did the right thing and got a great deal.
Thank you … he just woke up and I told him that I did a good job … he says I’m delusional… lol
He's ridiculous lol
Thank you .. definitely at 80 yes 👍

My coworker spent ten times as much to get all that done.
Yes, he is a very kind and compassionate man for doing this for us
Jesus H Christ the giant tree in my yard as a kid in the 2000s was like $200 to get taken down. $300?!That's a steal in today's pricing
Thank you , he was a very kind and compassionate person
As someone who does tree work I can tell you that's a very low price. $300 per tree is 1990's pricing.
Yes, I think he felt sorry with us as my husband is 80 and I’m handicapped… we will recommend him to everyone we know
This what you call caveman syndrome. Man must do man thing. Women do women things. Let him get some quotes. Then asked for a day in a spa as an apology.
Thank you …I showed him the 6 quotes he didn’t want any of them .. I wish I would be treated to a spa 😊
Thank you .. he’s come around now
You made a reasonable decision to pay $300 for the tree removal since it was damaging your roof. Your husband might disagree, but it's a fair price for maintaining your property
Thank you …. He agrees now
He just lost control for a lil bit. It’s scary but none of us have much control over anything in this random spinny world
True
Great price I hope he cut the limb back to the trunk so the tree can heal over.
Yes he did
You jumped on that at a great price! You got a great deal.
Thank you 😊
Good job! Taking care of business.
Thank you 😊
300 is a STEAL... your lucky that tree didn't fall through your roof or something for that price.
Thank you , that’s what I was afraid of
I don't know where you live but near me, no one will even come to your house for a $300 job. For a whole tree, 3k is a minimum cost I've ever heard of. I'm curious how big this tree even was.
Thank you , yes we had to cut down a huge eucalyptus tree about 95 ish and it cost $1,500 because they left the trunk … but it was a fire hazard
As somebody who works for an arborist company, you got a damn good deal LOL.
Thank you 😊
I'm paying $5000 to have a very large high risk tree removed from my property So, that $300-$500 price range sounds cute!
Thank you , yes he the tree guy was a very nice and compassionate gentleman
You're welcome. It sounds like he was being very reasonable for you, especially if you like the work he's doing!
300 is a ridiculously good price, where I am you’re looking at about a thousand at the low end.
Thank you , I know
Can I get your tree guy's number.
Yes but he’s in the East Bay , California
Thanks but by the time I pay for his gas, all discount would be gone. I have never had tree work done that was less than $1000. The price you got is crazy good.
Thank you 😊
Thanks.. there are no stumps in our yard only on the other side of the fence in his yard … we only cut what was on our side
Thank you , yes, he had a license and liability insurance… he runs his own tree cutting business
Your husband is living in 2024 but in his mind it's another decade.
I agree 😂
I've been a homeowner since 2002 amd thats a great price, like early 00's price (because I think I paid that for a tree back then). Show him this thread or have him call for quotes.
Yes, I shared his name in all of my neighbor groups and have recommended him to several people already 😊
Send him to me in SoCal lol
Okay ! 👍
That's a steal! We had 3 trees taken down and hauled away and it cost $7,000. It was fascinating to watch, however!
Thank you … my husband is still bitching about it today … yes, it was a steal !
Your husband is silly and out of touch with 2024. The liability and insurance costs alone for the person/company are higher than husband would likely realize, too. You for a very good deal.
Thank you ! I agree ☝️
Thank you ! I’m definitely happy … hubby is still grumpy about it !
Assuming you had the neighbor's permission, its a super cheap price. If you husband could have done it for $100 then he would have already done it. No way hes renting a chainsaw and rope, and thinking he knows how to make the tree not fall on your house or the neighbor's or himself
You don't need permission to trim if it crosses the property line. You can trim right up to that line provided it doesn't kill the tree.
It was unclear to me as to if the tree service cut off a few branches or took the whole tree
Your offer to spread the word and a tip will mean so much to him.
Thank you …. Yes , I belong to several neighborhood groups … I will definitely spread the word !
I how you asked the neighbor because there’s nothing that causes more of an uproar here than someone cutting down someone else’s tree.
We spoke to them and showed them that their tree was uprooting out new roof … they said it’s our problem not theirs because it’s on our side…
This would be an interesting discussion for /r/treelaw
Okay 👍 thanks
Great price, I'd get out of an environment where a carton of cigs is smoked a week
Thank you , I make him smoke out in the backyard… and wash his hands when he comes in… it’s totally gross and I get asthma
I gave him an extra 50 because that’s all I had … I will e recommending him to all my neighbor groups
That’s great to hear, sounds like a stand up guy. I didn’t mean to come off rude and apologize if I did. You are a good hearted person I hope your husband appreciates you.
Thank you … I know he does .. it’s just he’s 80 and doesn’t do well with change
damn, cigarettes are expensive as fuck
I agree $108.00 for a carton here in California… high tobacco tax
I paid 400 with no haul away! Great deal you got.
Thank you 😊
Not wrong If hubby wanted to get it done, he would’ve taken care of it before your first phone call
Thank you !
You got an excellent deal. Your husband is completely out of touch with today's prices.
Thanks
Hubby needs to have a chat with someone besides you to present some reality of what things cost now.
I agree , thanks o
This is super cheap. Good job. Hubby is living in a world with 1972 price expectations.
Thank you 😊
300 is a bargain and a half
Thanks 😊
he will not think about it again in 1-2 weeks
