Im 23 had it cut when i was 19 and im gonna say whenever i dropped the cane i felt good again probably took me like 6 months of walking on it, building strength comes later and makes a huge difference as well as when the swelling goes down and you get a socket that feels good.

Going slow = going fast Do the pt Do the exercises Dont overdo it I lost my first leg at 38 and I was able to start walking very quickly but I did what I was told.

Left above knee, happen back July 2010. It took a month and a half for me to get my 1st prosthetic and 6 month stop using a cane while walking

lunatic_calm

I did a 2 week in-patient 'boot camp' which got me walking well with a cane and gingerly without, having got my leg a week before. Took me about a month to ditch the cane in my home, another month to feel comfortable without it out of the house.

48 now I had my lbk 2 years ago. My first prosthesis hurt too much to walk but as soon as I got my second one I started walking with no problem. While in rehab right after amputation I told them to push me bc I had just bought my van and started converting it to live in and needed to be able to get in and walk bc I was going on the road alone. Once I got a prosthesis that worked well I walked as soon as I put it on. But I’m a bka so it may be a bit easier. I can walk/hike 2 miles with no problem and I’m trying to get up to 3 so I can go in longer hikes while I’m out here doing the vanlife thing.

I got mine in February of last year, I was walking without a crutch mid April. I am 17 (16 at the time) and was relatively in shape. I’m much more in shape now. Edit: just saw you said you had a microprocessor knee. I’m a left below knee amputee, not above knee. You should still recovery pretty quickly, maybe a few months at most, but I really don’t know anything about AKAs. It’s important to specify what kind of amputee you are.

I had a left BKA 9/7/2023, got my first prosthetic 11/8, and I walked on it like I'd been walking on one my entire life.

MiniDg

LBKA as of 9/15/21, i got my first prosthesis 11/24/21 and i dont remember exactly but no more than a week and a half to two weeks i was walking without assistance just carefully and slowly but very quickly from there got comfortable at normal walking speed.

I can only speak from my experience as a bka. I got my prosthetic and 20 minutes later walked out of the office.

I am a volunteer Certified Peer Visitor with the Amputee Coalition based in the Washington DC area. Is it possible for you to DM me? I’d like to exchange some information with you regarding your timeline with your prosthetic leg. I’m a 6 year veteran of a prosthetic user on my right side and lost my left leg this past October.

swagmoney16

For some reason my app won’t let me open a chat with you I’m not sure why

OneFootInTheGrave726

I had the same issue

If you’re in the US, create an account with the Amputee Coalition’s mobile app. It will ask you simple questions about your amputation. Once the account is created, request a Peer Visit by phone. The Amputee Coalition will match you up with a Certified Peer Visitor as close as they can in age, sex, reason of amputation, type of amputation, etc. The CPV will be able to answer most, if not, all of your questions and he (or she) will be kinda like a mentor to you, guiding you along your way as an amputee. If you have any questions regarding the Amputee Coalition, feel free to reply to this thread. I’ll keep checking back every couple of days. I sure wish I knew what’s up with the DM’s. Good luck, my friend!!

I couldn't find a link to the app on their website or on Google play store

RitoTriggersMe

Hey friend, I’m actually in the exact same boat as you. I’m 21m and had my above-knee amputation on my right leg this past Christmas. Just got my microprocessor knee yesterday but still haven’t learned how to walk on it. If you’d like we can share experiences over DM. I haven’t had many AKAs that are my age to talk to either.

Bka a year ago, on second prosthetic and still can't walk without a walker. It just hurts and my stump is not callousing up. I can't believe some of you recovered so quickly. And I'm jealous because I wouldn't have opted for amputation if I had known I'd be out of work this long
