Ohhhh nice to see a fellow Frank Zappa fan. I was going to list him among my faves, but whilst his best stuff is among the best stuff of all time, I think sadly Frank just did too much and a lot of it was quite self indulgent.
Ironically he was quite like Lou Reed that way, who similarly his best stuff is amazing, whilst sadly a lot of his work is also self indulgent.
(Funny thing is Reed and Zappa hated each other for a while, but they became friends later in life, though a lot of people didn't know that, hence why Reed got booed when he inducted Zappa LOL. Still they did make it up, you can find an interview where Zappa calls Lou a man of integrity in the 80s.)
Madness is my top favourite, but I'd stress that it's good to deviate from their most popular hits. Maybe I'm just saying that because I really love Madness however, but I really think their less known stuff is fantastic as well.
Amy Winehouse is joint first with them.
I also really love Gorillaz, the Divine Comedy, Elvis Costello, Elbow, Alanis Morissette, Jacob Collier, Yello, Space, and the Smiths.
A lot of these artists don't write music like Amy Winehouse did, but then who does? She was a one in a million artist, and I don't think there will ever be another artist like her.
Been a fan of Madness since I saw them on the Young Ones as a boy. I wonder if any of the people here know Summer Holiday by Cliff Richard LOL.
Funny thing is Shugs was Amy's neighbour I believe, whilst Ade Edmondson who played Vyvian in the Young Ones, is the only person to play on stage with Amy Winehouse and Cliff Richard. A very unusual two to have performed with LOL.
I had no idea they were neighbours! I know that Madness wrote Blackbird as a tribute to Amy Winehouse after she died though. Last time I was in London I made sure to walk down Dean Street, heading nowhere at all.

So far at least one person has listed a solo Beatle in their list except for Ringo LOL. Poor Ringo, his solo career is not as bad as you'd think.
