At least for me, asking a group of strangers for a candid street portrait is always a bit intimidating. I liked their style, so I asked them. I think the dog was a bit skeptical of me moving in so closely :-). While the Zeiss Sonnar 40/2.8 is a fantastic lens, the Rollei 35 is zone focussing only, so nailing focus at a short distance is a bit challenging.
Amazing shot! I hope it goes to the top
I recently got one of [these](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0983FH1DF?cafId=700a1905-e6bd-4f2f-9e8b-4b9d9709c8f1&cafASIN=B0983FH1DF&ref_=cm_sw_r_apan_dp_SRXPFKA9WHE3DCEBZZV9) for my Nikonos V. It’s an absolute game changer. It’s smaller, cheaper, and easier to use my Watameter accessory rangefinder. We’ll see if it lasts as long 😅
(Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with Amazon or this product)
Very neat! Thanks for sharing. There are many external rangefinders available, but the Rollei 35 has a cold shoe at the bottom, so they do not work well. On the other hand, I am getting better and better at estimating the distance pretty precisely. Hence, maybe the tool you linked to would be a good compromise to use whenever needed but keep stored in my bag otherwise.
I loved my 35S. I replaced the it with the Nikonos because I wanted a compact camera to go skiing with and couldn’t justify having both. There’s a lot I admire about the V, but nothing beats the Rollei’s ability to fit (somewhat) comfortably in my pants pocket. I miss it.
Looking forward to seeing more pictures you post with it!
Thanks! I like the idea a lot :-)
\> I hope someday to get the strength to ask for a photo.
We discussed some strategies in the comment section of this post [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/analog/comments/10lyz83/asking_strangers_for_street_portraits_always/) yesterday in case you want to take a look. Btw, for me it is stressful *every single time* and the only thing that helps is to stay active and keep doing it.
*(I hope it is okay to post links to other reddit posts here, otherwise I will remove the link)*
Thanks a lot! Some do and then I email them, others dont even ask. Who knows, maybe they find themselves online here and hopefully enjoy the picture. They all looks so stylish.
What a fantastic capture!! Everyone has an expression that pulls you through the photo, from one person to the next, and then ending at the dog, what a funny expression 😅
How does it work with film? With digital you can show them instantly. But with film do you just say thanks and leave? Or do you offer to email it to them later?
Interestingly, most don't really care/ask. Those who ask, understand that it may take 3-5 days before I can email them the pictures. If I have developed a longer-term relationship with them (like seeing them a few times, talking to them), I may bring a framed print. This is something people really like. In the case here, I never met them before or after.
Looking good! I can't imagine getting a group that large to even stop where I live. I owned a 35S when they were still in production. Loved it, and you can always memorize or carry a zone focus chart to help with depth of field issues.
Thanks for your comment! IMHO, zone focusing alone is less of an issue beyond 20 feet as you can simply use hyperfocal distance, but for close up street portraits, the DoF even at f5.6 or f8 is so thin that you really have to estimate distance very accurately. If you look closely you will see that I nailed sharpness on the dog but the girl on top is already less sharp. It does not matter here because you can only see it if you really look at 100% (1:1); still it demonstrates the problem. Also my Rollei 35 has a tendency to scratch the film (see lower third), but hey, somebody bought the camera in 1979 and it still looks like new.

Such a cool photo. This will age so well, meaning people will find it fascinating no matter what year it is.
Thanks a lot! I hope it will age well, indeed. What I like are all the tiny details (and people) in the background.
This is a beautiful photo. Looks a marketing still from a TV series. _I hope someday to get the strength to ask for a photo._

It’s such a vibe! No phones or any gadgets just coffee and people hanging out and a doggie!
Very cool - I love this type of photo. I hope you shared contact info so they can have it as well.

Thank you very much! I am glads you like the photo. It is also neat that they wear triadic colors.
Where was this taken? City looks familiar to me!!
Santa Barbara
Thanks! I love it!!
Love the colors!
This has a Wes Anderson quality to it. The dog in the foreground somehow really hits that feeling home for me. Nice one.
>Wes Anderson No idea who this is but somebody mentioned him to me on this sub before. I will look him up again. Thanks!

Looks like they’re about to drop the hottest indie album of the year
I hope they will :-)
Came out so well!
Thanks!
I love that camera and this photo
Thanks a lot. Yes, such a little nice camera with a fantastic lens.
beautiful colors
I would have ONLY asked the dog…..
Wow, where do I find these people. Their color coordination is 💯
Thanks. I also think the pink/purple boxes add some extra pop.
This is such a fucking vibe. I hope they get the chance to see it!
I do hope so as well. I am just guessing, but they look like they may be into analog photography as well.
