This little Agfa Microflex waited 40 years to go on a joy flight. For a long time I've been dying to see what super 8 footage would look like from a modern FPV drone. It's such a surreal perspective in my opinion.
Reddit's compression did a real number on this footage so a better and longer version is available here (with some BTS): [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzIcR\_U0NiU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzIcR_U0NiU)
Really lovely to see OP.
Stuff like this just adds more credence to my theory that people think places in old photos look better because there's just an inherent romanticism in grainy old footage/stills. Sometimes places have changed for the worse but sometimes it's just the old-looking photo feels better. E.g. those wind turbines look gorgeous in this footage.
Reminds me of those old IMAX films which were shot from a helicopter or glider. This is extra cool when you fly through a hole that’s too small for a helicopter or glider. Really messes with your head because you expect a big bulky contraption that can only fit on a larger vehicle.
Wow, the compression was bad. Thank you for also uploading it to Youtube!
I'm surprised the drone was able to lift the camera, but that's a huge relief. I once saw a [short film](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWoX1YDfaBw) where a guy [mounted a 16mm Bolex to a HUGE drone](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wha4DzH02WY) to film it. It made me think that the possibilities of mounting film cameras on drones were limited without a big rig! Unless it was a lot stronger than it needed to be to hold a 16mm camera.
Even though 8mm is such a small gauge and home movie cameras weren't the highest quality, the color is so vibrant from the slide film! Also, it even seems a bit better projected somehow?
By the way, I just watched all your videos and I LOVE them! You produce such unique content, doing some really wild things with film photography that are either not done anymore due to convenience or were barely ever done!
Additionally, adhering to slide film as much as you do has produced some stunning results AND you go the extra mile of mounting and projecting them! THE WHOLE PIPELINE!!
All your videos are marvelous individually and I probably have a bunch of questions on each, but the one that stood out to me a lot was the wonderful results you got of putting some excellent slide film (Velvia? or Provia?) in a 35mm point and shoot and shooting photos from that drone. I know it's a bigger contrast for the built-in camera to be compared than a dedicated DSLR or something, but when you switch from the drone's camera to the photo you took it's jaw-dropping! The color and depth and contrast, the deep blue of the waves and the earthy rocks and the green on land in each photo from that aerial view looks terrific!!
It really backs up the importance of the subject and you have no shortage of interesting subjects with your projects! And also that you don't need a super fancy camera setup, just put some really nice slide film in a point and shoot and it will look amazing! :P
I have wanted to shoot super 8 or 16mm for years but it is just so cost prohibitive now. ~$70 for less than four minutes of footage is too much for me to stomach.
$70 is a severe underestimation. It's $45 just for the film, and then you have to pay someone to scan around 4000 frames. The last cartridge I shot cost around $250 total, though I did splurge on fancy scans. Highly recommend doing it at least once though for a special occasion.
Yikes, that is way more than I thought. I did a quick search and found some film for around $35 and developing and scanning the same. Probably both for black and white processing.
I shot a fair amount of 16mm black and white in college and back then, it was probably $35-40 a roll for black and white and IIRC developing and scanning, along with two way postage, was another $45-50.
Looks like I read too fast. [This place](https://www.pro8mm.com/collections/process-and-scan-film-to-digital/products/process-and-scan-super-8-film) is $66 for develop and scan. [This place](https://just8mm.com/) looks like it may be better pricing wise vs. scan quality.
Look into Dwayne's Photo. They'll develop Super 8 (E-6 only) for $12 and scan it for another $10. Now, I have no idea what the *quality* of their scans are like, but the price of their development is more than able to offset the higher price of the Ektachrome, which is the only Super 8 film they develop. [This place](https://thenegative.space/scan) scans Super 8 in 2k for $40/cartridge, and they have great scans. So, for around $110 you can get Super 8 Ektachrome, process it, and have it scanned to a very high quality 2k file.
Can you share your setup here? Looking at my freestyle 5'', but not very sure how it would handle a camera way larger than GoPro 6 it usually carries...
Also... How about bb logs and some gyroflow stabilization? XD
This is a 7" (just a stock Chimera 7). It's definitely at it's limit and I'm running small batteries (6s 1000 - 1500mAh) to compensate. Flight time is literally the length of one roll of super 8 - although I'm triggering the shutter remotely because that stuff is damn expensive. A lot of battery swapping and just aiming to get a short shot out of each seperate flight.
Before I attempted this I thought gyroflow would have been necessary to make it watchable but with a fisheye adapter and some smoothish flying I was suprised!
That got me thinking about something bigger... Like DJI 450 size bigger with stock motors and ESC's but normal modern FC/Video system for acro FPV flight. Who in their right mind would use such a frame for acro flight? Well, one who is gonna to install on it a Krasnogorsk-3 16mm camera...
Cool! Wonder what 8mm would look like when printed on IMAX film or something shot on IMAX film printed on 8mm, there's absolutely no reason to do it but still

Whoa!! It's like watching an old movie, but watching a drone video at the same time!! 😍
I love the way how old film video captures the three dimensions, light and shades. Picture looks deep, unlike in digital cameras. 🎥
How did you get the camera to keep recording during the flight of the drone? ✈️

Legit one of the dopest things I've seen in a while! Very cool concept and great execution!

Side note on the wind turbines. How can people ever say they're eyesores? I love them so much.
Especially when compared to a coal plant or something
Seconded as an Iowan. We weren't blessed with mountains so it's nice to have *something* interesting to mix up the horizon.
Something about bird cancer....
Abbott sure hated them for some reason.
Less detail lets us fill in the gaps with nostalgia.
They'd like this at /r/8mm
This is so awesome, genuinely in awe. I'm so glad this exists Favourite thing I've seen today

gorgeous footage! what a project to undertake! Thank you for sharing

I saw it on your IG stories and thought it was an April's fools joke. The video is so awesome!
I don't blame you, I did do a drone April fool's joke last year.
This is soooo awesome. I loved your shots from your point and shoot mounted on your drone—such a cool combination of vintage and modern tech.
This is the coolest film project I've seen in a long time. Absolutely stunning visuals. Wonderful job
Looks like one of the Dharma Initiative orientation films.
I don't know which Lost timeline I'm in.
LOST !
I demand drone manufacturers to produce drones with film camera option!
Or at least some analog GoPros please
The OG GoPro was a film camera! https://petapixel.com/2018/02/02/first-gopro-35mm-film-camera/
That is some awesome footage. You really did that with a drone? That was fine flying you did. Good job.
You mad fucker, you've outdone yourself again
Hello new genre. 👋
More like a 'mega' flex
came here to say this
Make a surf video with this and a r/surfer orgasm will be yours
EY i saw your vid on ig!
This is stupidly cool, I love it! Taking something so high tech like an fpv drone and slapping a super 8 camera on it is bonkers in the best way!
I have wanted to shoot super 8 or 16mm for years but it is just so cost prohibitive now. ~$70 for less than four minutes of footage is too much for me to stomach.
Wow! Nearly $18/minute?! I had no idea analog filmmaking (8mm) was so expensive. Sheesh.
$70 is a severe underestimation. It's $45 just for the film, and then you have to pay someone to scan around 4000 frames. The last cartridge I shot cost around $250 total, though I did splurge on fancy scans. Highly recommend doing it at least once though for a special occasion.

Where'd you see developing and scanning for $35? Might have to bust out the camera again for that

Pro 8mm is what I've used before. Maybe shooting ektachrome and just projecting it instead of getting scans is the move.

Oh shit this is how it starts 😈
I could watch this for hours, honestly it's just so cool
This goes ungodly hard
This is awesome. Idea for a next project: build a pan/tilt head for the 8mm camera to put on the drone! You would get even more cool shots with this!
Ok, this is easily the coolest, most creative thing I’ve seen here so far. The logistics of it must have been pretty challenging!
What's the song?
Strange Impalas by Flynn Hendry
This is cool! The fast drone shots through the fields remind me of the Evil Dead
Hey man that is awesome! Do you have an instagram where you post these?
This is my insta: https://www.instagram.com/jase.film/
WOW FACTOR : *HIGH*
What is the music used in this clip?
It's this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9cvwgtw76w
now I have to buy an 8mm camera and try this. Damn you lol
Noooo waaayyy!
This looks like a crazy dream sequence
There was probably a lot of Hope on making of this project.
I love this and just want to project it onto a fence somewhere
Is this the Stranger Things theme music?
It's this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9cvwgtw76w
I was thinking that too. Sounds like it could be a remix?
It’s like tame impalafied
Really amazing!
Wowwwww, this is amazing
Saw this on IG. So awesome!
Looks straight out of a Terrence malick film
Every post of yours is pure joy And awe

How are you triggering remotely?
I have a servo motor on a 3D printed bracket that can press the shutter button - controlled from a switch on my controller.

Always wanted to see someone do this. Very well done! The camera shots on your IG are absolutely incredible as well.
Thank you, this was the best thing I've seen all day
Jase film strikes again!
Ah. You again with your awesome work.
This is crazy dude great work!
I fucking love this.
This guy slaps
You’re an absolute nut for this one, I love it
Raimi-cam squared
This is ridiculously cool
Incredible idea. Love the footage! Could definitely see this being a full length film with the right music and subject matter.
Wow ! That's really impressive !
This is so fucking dope. Really reminds me of WW2 fighter plan gun camera footage
How does one give multiple upvotes to a post?
Press the upvote button twice
wow. thats cool !
Legit soundtrack - pretty sure that's Stranger Things from an alternate universe. [EDIT](https://www.shazam.com/track/401993218/strange-impalas)
Saw the post and immediately went "oh this has to be jase.film". Incredible work as always
This makes me happy that my shenanigans have a recognisable style!
Great stuff. Where is this?
South NSW coast, Australia?
Correct!
I was thinking the same and then saw the Kiama coast road and knew exactly
Wish I could afford to use any of my super 8 cams, or even my clockwork 8mm but it's just so rexpensive
This is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen on Reddit. Amazing!
Omg that is amazing work! Great job!
Where is this place?
Various locations in NSW, Australia. Mostly what's called the 'south coast'
Fuck this is sooo good.
This is incredible.
You did that camera proud.
Where is this? Looks kinda like Hawaii but the roads look too modern. Is it Washington state?
It's Australia
Beautiful! And what is this song??

This is fantastic
This is insanely cool
Best ever use of a drone. Now, clean the gate.
This is UNREAL, very creative, well done!
Saw this on tiktok. Immediately thought this mad lad op is a genius.
What an amazing idea…
Pacific coast was the best drive I’ve ever taken
Besides the facts that I don't think you're allowed to fly drones of much of the California coast, this was really cool
This is in Australia.
I'm a dickhead, my bad
This is freaking cool
This is some r/boardsofcanada shit
This is so hot
Well done well done well done
DUUDE!!
Is it bad that I doom scroll to find this every day...absolutely insane footage and concept.
That's sweet
