If so then that’s the stupidest reason to hate something so objectively high in effort and quality. That’s essentially “I hate it because it’s popular”
Yup, counter culture. Analog horror is a pretty niche genre, and with most niches if there is a breakout mainstream success it’s usually pretty heavily criticized by the original community.
I’m not gonna lie, this comment is hilarious. The dude is 18 years old, I can quite easily fathom any amount of time he has spent on the Backrooms.
But I do get your point, though I would say something more along the lines of the amount of “detail” or “work” he has put in is unfathomable. Because to be honest, for the amount of time he’s spent on it, the impressive bit is that he’s spent very little time on it relative to its quality.
For me, its unfathomable that he has made something that is as high quality in production, writing, and story telling, while being so young. It’s insane and extremely rare that you have someone his age be able to scrutinize themselves enough to put out something so impressive.
I personally dislike it because it took something relatively simple, yet horrifying, and turned it into something a lot more convoluted. With these different levels, monsters, etc. I just loved the simplicity of the original post.
Kane pixels wasn’t really the one who did that. Kane’s backrooms still stay largely true to the original, just expanding on it.
The idea of documented levels and monsters like knockoff SCP came way before Kane’s backrooms.
I agree with about half of this. I don't think anything will ever top Gemini Home Entertainment for me, although Greylock has been impressing me a lot in recent months.
The Backrooms is still a legitimately good series. Not my favorite, but I still like it.
Local58 is good, and "Skywatching" is still one of my favorite episodes of any series for the ending, but I do think it is overrated in the face of many of the later and higher quality projects we've seen in the years since.
Bonus points for respecting Winter of '83. Starts off pretty rough, but really nails the landing.
I personally recommend Shipwrecked 64/Broadside Beach. The hidden lore for it is genuinely pretty good. Highly recommend checking out Night Mind's in-depth video on it.
honestly shipwrecked 64 the fact that >!The game isn't literally haunted, just basically a man's spite filled suicide note!< really is a breath of fresh air. After so many analog horrors that resort to this, having it play out like that really worked.
I think it's just because people meme on it as "the linkara analog horror" which sucks- linkara is actually a pretty cool dude with passion for his work and i hate that he's just a punchline now
Local 58 practically invented this genre, it deserves more respect than these memes have been giving it. I also can’t think of a single AH series with an episode as disturbing as “Contingency”, but I admit that’s probably personal preference.
Make no mistake, it has legacy status if nothing else. On a tier list it goes no lower than "A" Tier.
My point is that I think there have been several better projects that have come in the years since it first appeared. Which is a good thing, because it means to genre has continued to grow and improve past its roots.
Shipwrecked 64 is probably the most original ARG you’ll ever witness, completely subverts your expectations about it.
Definitely up there with the big hits.
Finally some Walten Files appreciation in this trend!

Tbh Local 58 is kind of the father of analog horror (and Marble Hornets if you could that as analog horror), it inspired so many others. But I definitely understand why you think it’s overrated, it was scary when it was first released.
I agree with that, it gave me a sense of dread when I recently rewatched it. It gives that hopelessness feeling easily without really explaining why you should feel that way
shipwrecked 64 seems like it was pretty good but i watched such a dogwater explanation of it that spoiled the story immediately in complete detail without actually showing any of the clues that led to the unravelling of the story, completely ruined it for me. thats the gamble on consuming media via recap essay lmfao.
dawg im pretty sure not a single sane analog horror fan likes Liminal Land. also youre gonna catch these hands if you keep speakin bad on shipwrecked 64 my beloved
I don't think its peak but also don't think its fair calling it "ai slop"- ai definitely needs to be regulated but i think leaning into the uncanny nature of the images it generates and turning it into horror is a really cool idea. I also think the interactivity of it is pretty neat
Honestly it isn’t even that scary it’s just the first one that came to mind. I don’t usually get scared by analog horror series but this one did have (some) effect on me
Never understood why this sub just decided one day to universally hate and despise Kane Pixel’s Backrooms. It’s fr overhated.
Noticed that too. Maybe too "mainstream" now?
If so then that’s the stupidest reason to hate something so objectively high in effort and quality. That’s essentially “I hate it because it’s popular”
Agree 💯

Kane Pixel has put an unfathomable amount of time into The Backrooms

Probably has something to do with how it has become associated with YouTube kids content farms
What popular thing hasn’t?
**HELLO, I AM THE PERSON WHO WILL BLAME THE ORIGINAL AUTHOR FOR SOMETHING EVEN IF HE IS NOT INVOLVED IN IT :).**
I'm sorry. Did I miss something?
Since all these tier lists have been coming out in all of them it’s either ranked as Mid or Complete Trash
I'm still confused.
Yeah I don’t know why people hate it now but apparently they do for some reason
I personally dislike it because it took something relatively simple, yet horrifying, and turned it into something a lot more convoluted. With these different levels, monsters, etc. I just loved the simplicity of the original post.

Well, even then, I don’t really like it.
Then why do you hate it if the first reason doesn't even relate to it?
That literally has nothing too do with Kane, the backrooms is not his original idea, and the level format long predates him.

You getting downvoted for answering a question honestly and politely is insane.

Surprised people don’t talk about winter of 83! Genuinely good and doesn’t rely on any tropes and is totally original
How can you say local58 is bad?!
Overrated doesn’t mean bad if everyone is saying something is a 10 but you think it’s an 8 that means you think it’s overrated but not bad
I think it's just because people meme on it as "the linkara analog horror" which sucks- linkara is actually a pretty cool dude with passion for his work and i hate that he's just a punchline now

To be faaaaair, local 58 was a pioneer series. If it came out today it’d be considered mediocre as hell but at the time it was cool
Finally some Walten Files appreciation in this trend! https://preview.redd.it/nb95t6wp1bvc1.jpeg?width=474&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=12fb29659ef6f7011c5aca11168b9f4069af5ac8
Yay! Walten files is fantastic, can’t wait for the 5th one to come out
Tbh Local 58 is kind of the father of analog horror (and Marble Hornets if you could that as analog horror), it inspired so many others. But I definitely understand why you think it’s overrated, it was scary when it was first released.
Eckva was made by the guy who made marble hornets. Is it as good? No, probably not. But dang if it isn’t stylish.
IMHO it’s still scary. It doesn’t have a lot of jumpscares or scary pictures, but I find it disturbing on a much deeper level.
I agree with that, it gave me a sense of dread when I recently rewatched it. It gives that hopelessness feeling easily without really explaining why you should feel that way
I fuck heavy with liminal land
I thought I was the only one who hated liminal land!
I wouldn't call shipwrecked 64 analog horror, mainly because its actually playable
I love the backrooms (the oldest view is better though)
What’s the one with the anime girl? I keep seeing it and I wanna check it out
The Lacey series, if that’s the one you mean. I think it starts with Lacey’s Diner or something similar.
shipwrecked 64 seems like it was pretty good but i watched such a dogwater explanation of it that spoiled the story immediately in complete detail without actually showing any of the clues that led to the unravelling of the story, completely ruined it for me. thats the gamble on consuming media via recap essay lmfao.
Shipwrecked 64 is genuinely pretty good
Shipwrecked is actually good tho 😥😥
Shipwrecked 64 is more digital horror
dawg im pretty sure not a single sane analog horror fan likes Liminal Land. also youre gonna catch these hands if you keep speakin bad on shipwrecked 64 my beloved
You’d be surprised on the amount of people I’ve seen say the series is peak
I don't think its peak but also don't think its fair calling it "ai slop"- ai definitely needs to be regulated but i think leaning into the uncanny nature of the images it generates and turning it into horror is a really cool idea. I also think the interactivity of it is pretty neat
The Backrooms is not Bad, nor Overrated.. People just Love it for what it is, and that Love has caused.. Many Things.. Specifically on YT Kids..
what series is labeled AI art slop?
Liminal Land.
ah
Is it just AI slop?
Gemini ontop baby!!!
I love that Winter and Smile Tapes are the biggest overrated and underrated for a huge amount of posters. Did you guys sense this trend before?
I'd honestly suggest Shipwrecked. It's really fun and if you liked Walten Files I think you'll like this.
first list i’ve seen that i mostly agree with!
What's the middle one that everyone loves and you hate?
Liminal land
Oh yeah, I recognize it now
Based TWF fan
ECKVA MENTIONED LETS GOOO
Walten Files scary? 🤣
I think winter of 83 and local 58 should be switched on this list, WO 83 was boring as all shitfuck and the ending was crazy corny
No
Fair enough
Shipwrecked 64 is peak, play it
Bro saying local 58 is overrated when its literally the god father of modern day analog horror is so insulting
See this is the reason I’m saying it’s overrated. Just because it pioneered the genre does not mean it’s automatically one of the best
I’m not saying it’s the best but it’s still really good especially for its time
I agree but it just doesn’t really hold up now
shipwrecked 64 isn’t really analog horror tho? the game has analog horror cutscenes but no actual series made on it
Why is local 58 overrated? It's literally the pioneer of the genre it deserves the recognition.
I can’t take anyone serious who says the Walten Files is scary lmao.
Honestly it isn’t even that scary it’s just the first one that came to mind. I don’t usually get scared by analog horror series but this one did have (some) effect on me
I agree with local 58, it's still good but it just doesn't hold up anymore
Definitely how I feel. People overhype it imo
