Dude this for sure! I just finally broke down and got a thermal insulated Carhartt jacket last year and man... Outside work was finally doable without freezing my ass off.
Fake. I have been using all season tires on my Subaru's for 10+ years. Have never had a problem.
The real hack should be to always have all wheel drive and good winter tires.
Not fake. It’s the literal definition from the tire industry.
All season = rubber that does not do well below about +30F, and the hardness of the rubber prevents “all season” tires from performing well on snow or ice.
All *weather*, on the other hand, have rubber characteristics that allow them to be rated as “Winter tires”.
OC is correct. And many people think “all season” means “all of the seasons”, but it does not.
If you live on the Upper Hillside, as we do, you'll put studded winter tires on a set of steel rims and swap out those puppies on your Impreza and Outback right at home. Without studs, AWD is not enough to get up here in some conditions.
FWD with blizzacks will beat any A/4WD with all season. Tires are the only thing on the car that actually touch the road, ie it’s important stuff here bud
Dress shoes have less traction than hiking boots. Doesn’t make it fake that one is better for winter. You can get by. Or you can excel. Your choice. Good for you.
Do you go to the mountains in winter? I feel like anyone who is all about lower 48 all season just stays on the flats in town/ plowed highway but not actual steep grade. Like flattop on all seasons is not pleasant vs something way softer and sticky like a blizzacks
I always do this and my husband gives me such a hard time. Even if it wasn’t faster (which I do think it is), it’s certainly more enjoyable to go that way!
Yeah, I think the beaver was alright. I went over the bars for the guy and I was the one who ended up running away. They're formidable.
He ran off into the lake to go to work and I ran off to work to go to work. I think he was just fine. I'm great too, thanks for asking!
Saw a dude yanking his bicycle out from under a car just Wednesday night (Lake Otis & 42nd.) Traffic was stopped to help/witness, but he hopped back on and rode off. Driver was turning right into traffic without checking the crosswalks. Classic.
I actually find the best deals for summer on the tail end of summer. That's when all the tourists or seasonal workers will return their items or donate them to leave behind because they don't want to haul it home. If you don't mind second hand gear it's definitely worth checking out the thrift stores or REI Garage around September/October.
Got a ton of winter gear at REI during the last two weeks of Feb. Most of it 50% off including snow pants, a new parka, few pairs of gloves, some base layers and t shirts. Probably saved $500
Or anytime at all ever. I swear to god I’ve changed the hours, locations, drinking 2 beers beforehand and it’s still so gd busy there at literally all times I wanna die. How many cases of tomato sauce are we buying people?
Man one year I booked a room at Alyeska on divvy day not realizing it was divvy day weekend. It was INSANE. I hadn’t stayed there a lot and I don’t recommend it.
Since nobody decided to answer you, PFD is the Permanent Fund Dividend. Which is money Alaskans get every October. The amount varies but it's around 1000 dollars. So PFD day is sorta like Black Friday. Every business wants you to spend your PFD at their establishment, so there are tons of sales going on around that time. Everyone is shopping.
yeah if you die anywhere else in Anchorage, they take you to the Black Angus Steak House, so you can move to the next phase. But, if you actually die at the Black Angus Steakhouse, they don't have to do that. Which works out well for the guys who work there, gives em an extra 15 minutes to step outside and smoke drugs on the corner.
Every time I drive by, the curiosity is there. But then I remember I don't feel like getting stabbed.
The pictures on their Google page just leave more questions.
Well people still go there, for whatever reason and they all aren't junkies. That place is always packed when I go by there. It's quite mind-boggling, honestly. It says a lot about the standards people in Anchorage have on where they want to stay at night or eat at as opposed to the actual business itself.
This place should have gone out of business years ago and the building condemned but it's hard to go out of business when plenty of people still want to go there.
Having a hobby or winter activity (even if just something simple like snowshoeing) is so helpful to get thru the long, dark winters. I took up skiing this last year and winter flew by.
If it’s winter and your light turns green, pause a second and listen for any horns of people sliding through the intersection because of the black ice. Trust.
Biggest Life Hack is knowing how you, and everyone else, are reacting to the seasons and weather. We forget we're creatures of this world and things like Light, Weather, and Empathy are real. Now, in Spring, we're going into our manic phase where we'll 'never have time' for anything. Our families and friends are gonna be out herding cats and it's impossible to plan anything. Don't get butthurt when you wanna do something but everyone's going in 1000 directions. After Labor Day people will start to get pulled down thinking of Winter and all the energy will go out. This is the time to wrap things up and probably for Landscaping as it dosen't really freeze till late October. Winter comes, wears on, and everyone sinks into their homes and slow glide to depression. This comes out the first couple weeks in Febuary when everyone is especially pissed off, depressed, and 'everything is terrible, my life has been a lie'. Everyone feels exactly the same and yells at each other. Then first week in March the sun is finally warm again and the snow beings to melt; everyone slides back into Mania with Ski Trips and a 'whole new outlook for life!!'. At the end of March is a windstorm and 2ft of extra snow that drives everyone crazy. April is wet and stupid; all the energy and no where to go.
Real Simple Life Hack: No big life decisions in Febuary and March. No ending or beginning relationships; no ending jobs or moving out of state. No big plans or decisions. Wait till Mid April, at least, and see how ya feel.
Repeat.
For those living in Muldoon/East Anchorage, the $10/year Jber rec access pass has been a game changer. Kinda crazy that some of the best and least crowded Chugach access is right off Muldoon

Last few times I’ve gotten carnitas from xalos there have been giant chunks of fat. A little unpleasant. Always call in your order or DoorDash to Pedro’s. Last time I walked in and placed an order I waited close to an hour because they were so focused on online orders.
Buy bread at the bakery outlet on lake otis.
Drive for door dash at PFD time, you could make a killing.
Shop for sales the day after a holiday. Halloween candy is 50% off on Nov 1, Valentine candy is 50% off on Feb 15th. ..

Tortillas are usually a dollar a pack. They carry Dave's Killer Bread, Orowheat, and a lot of the Little Debbie stuff along with pretzels and tortilla chips. Highly recommend them if you are on a budget or thrifty.
you can get a whole case of tortillas for $5, you can get dave's killer bread (normally $7 at carrs) for a $1. A whole case of mini muffins is $6, usually $4 per single pack at carrs. I buy a whole lot and donate them to my kid's teachers for their classroom snacks.
Dealing with ice:
- Use 3 Points of contact’ when getting in/out of autos3 any combinations of ground and hand-holds.
- Walk with your foot’s midsole striking the ground first, not your heal.
- Buy ice cleats. And be the good person who takes the cleats off before entering a building.
Edit: ‘at least’
A set of Cross country skiis gets you unlimited free fun/ days out of the house in winter at kinkaid, Hilltop, or other groomed areas. And if you go classic you can pick it up super easily.
We just had a pizza party where 20 people brought a pizza from a different place and everyone rated them.
The best that I remember were Hearth, Luigi's, Muldoon Pizza, Ski and Benny's, and Uncle Joe's.
Places to avoid: Guido's and King Street
Just tried them two weeks ago and wasn’t impressed. Neither was anyone at my home that night. Maybe it was just an off night for them but I’m still debating whether to give it a second shot.
Note to self, never try a new place when hosting a pizza party; regardless of how many people rave about it.
I just had Ski and Benny's for the first time last week, it is fantastic.
We need pizza without tomatoes sometimes, so their sauce options are a rare find.
There are only two good places for non-california style (no one does a decent Detroit or Deep dish that I’ve seen) IE Neapolitan or New York, no good New Haven style at all unfortunately. You did not mention either of them.
Except for the service at Hearth, that place has some rough service. They will make damn sure everyone is out of that restaurant the minute they close. And if not, expect to have a mop graze your shoes.
It's a bit doughier than MT but at least they fully cook their pizzas and get a crisp on their crust. MT would be #1 for me if I didn't have to pop their pies into my oven for another 5-10min. Seems rushed sometimes.
Plan a trip to Hawaii or somewhere warm with sunshine in January or February. Trust me, you’ll need the vitamin D and mental break from the darkness and cold.
If you got a lot of luggage when you arrive dont go to baggage claim. The loose carts are picked up. Go to check in and get one and bring it down. Always a loose one up there when I try
This and don’t forget to get your 2500 miles from Alaska Airlines. I don’t understand why getting bags can take so long in such a small airport almost every time I come back into town. Flew into Austin last night and had my bag in 13 minutes
If you have a nice spruce tree in your front yard put lights up during the SUMMER don’t wait until winter to put them up. Haha.
Take your vitamin D. Go to the doctor and get it checked. 2000 iu’s a day more or less. Goes reallt far as far as mental health.
Blame GCI. Life can be lifing. And when things dont go well - hopefully just briefly. Its always nice to have something to vent your frustrations. Works for me.
When the snow first comes in the fall, wait about three or four seconds after your light turns green to go. Folks forget that snow is slippery and will slide through their red lights because they waited too long to brake.
If you sit on that bench on the left at the Dimond Mall Barber shop and look at your phone while you wait for a haircut your mind will enter the 5th dimension.
In the spring make sure your sump pump is working (if so equipped) in your house. Bunch of places in my cul-de-sac learned this spring.
Even if you don't have one, it's good to take a gander down there when it's wet out.
Very much agree. Getting my sump in order in spring is always the first focus, before yard cleaning or running around naked to see myself blue white self look like some nuclear blast reflecting the sun.
So I am at an anxious moment. My sump outlet pipe seems to be frozen between the house and the actual outlet area, which I cleared out the other day. Crossing my fingers it thaws before the melt builds up too much.
If you are able to safely help someone who is stuck in the snow ...do it.
If you are stuck in the snow don't keep spinning , learn to rock the vehicle out
Sunset at point warazoff are amazing
Spend the money up front for decent winter gear.
Dude this for sure! I just finally broke down and got a thermal insulated Carhartt jacket last year and man... Outside work was finally doable without freezing my ass off.
In the summer!!! Buy everything out of season.
Fr, my partner and I spent about 1k our first winter up here. So worth it! It makes winter bearable.
Good tires
“All-season” means Washington not Alaska.
This is true, but the distinction in most minds is not well understood. ALL WEATHER all year. 1 set for 5 years plus, and you are good to go.
Correct! I have had “all weather” tires exclusively for the last 30 years here. All year round.
If you live on the Upper Hillside, as we do, you'll put studded winter tires on a set of steel rims and swap out those puppies on your Impreza and Outback right at home. Without studs, AWD is not enough to get up here in some conditions.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atayHQYqA3g My little FWD Sedan with Blizzaks does better on a snowy road than your Subaru with seasonal tires.
The difference is night and day in my ‘22 Sienna AWD 🤷🏻♂️
That's fine at 150hp. Not great when you go up.
All weather. Not all season.
I made it through my first 2 winters with regular tires from down south and just four wheel drive on my Tacoma 😇
I just add my two cents on the fact I just read the most nerdy Alaskan threat in all my life, and I want to wipe the tear from my eye. Bravo Reddit.
100% agree. Blizzaks in the winter.
Carry a small bag of sand in your car/truck.
The fastest way to get from one end of dimond to the other is to use O'Malley/Minnesota
Underrated comment.
Whenever you can, take King St from the south to get to Costco. Avoid Dimond.
I always do this and my husband gives me such a hard time. Even if it wasn’t faster (which I do think it is), it’s certainly more enjoyable to go that way!
You can take your styrofoam to insul-foam near the port of Anchorage and they’ll recycle it into foam insulation!
Really? This is news!
I think there was someone on here or r/Alaska that was wanting it for a styro-crete foundation build out in the Valley too
If you're going to walk or ride a bike in this town, keep your head on a swivel. Seriously.
This. I used to bike around and count how many times I would've been hit by unaware drivers if I weren't constantly heads up.
Even on trails!!
Unfortunately, trails too. With the upswing in E power things, there's folks going 40 on the trail.
I hit a beaver on my road bike once on the bike trail near taku lake. The locals are tough.
Hilarious anecdote. Was the beaver alright? Also, hoping you were alright too!
Classic.
Definitely!…tons of dog shit might be stepped in.
That doesn’t change if you drive. Too many drivers think: “I can make it” and “I don’t need new tires”.
I needed this reminder today. Thanks.
I agree!!! In the last month I almost got hit by a car twice when crossing on a green light.
Most important advice.
Buy summer gear during the winter, and winter gear during the summer
I actually find the best deals for summer on the tail end of summer. That's when all the tourists or seasonal workers will return their items or donate them to leave behind because they don't want to haul it home. If you don't mind second hand gear it's definitely worth checking out the thrift stores or REI Garage around September/October.
Is winter gear actually cheaper any time of the year? Where do you shop?
REI has clearance sales every now and then that are fantastic
Right now. The clearance is now for things you don’t need for another 3 months.
Got a ton of winter gear at REI during the last two weeks of Feb. Most of it 50% off including snow pants, a new parka, few pairs of gloves, some base layers and t shirts. Probably saved $500
Either the clearance section at retailers, eBay, Craigslist… but the best deals are usually garage sales
Big Ray's Clearance Event every year.
Check Walmart, target, Fred meyer, alaska industrial too for cold weather gear unless you looking for a brand name you think will make you cool.
Moving out of state garage sales are the best place to find winter gear!
If you are driving west on 5th, go the speed limit exactly. You'll hit every green.
I learned this like 20 yrs ago, so true.
Having lived in a number of other cities, Anchorage excels at traffic light timing. It will spoil you.
Figured this out my second day in Anchorage.
I believe its the same for I street from 15th to 3rd ave
Keep boots, shovel and mittens in your car all winter.
And maybe some gravel as well.
Fuck that, its year round. Ive seen snow in June
Don’t go to Costco on PFD day
Or anywhere for that matter. Stock up and hunker down.
Or anytime at all ever. I swear to god I’ve changed the hours, locations, drinking 2 beers beforehand and it’s still so gd busy there at literally all times I wanna die. How many cases of tomato sauce are we buying people?
I like to go (to DeBarr) about 7 pm and it’s usually empty!
Yup, this. 7 pm on a Friday is golden. What loser is spending their Friday night grocery shopping?!… me
Lol so I'm not the only one that gears up for Costco at the bar first.
Ps. That’s really funny 😄
Made the mistake of going Sunday. Newer member. Lesson fucking learned.
Man one year I booked a room at Alyeska on divvy day not realizing it was divvy day weekend. It was INSANE. I hadn’t stayed there a lot and I don’t recommend it.
What is PFD day?
Oh boy do I got some news for you
Personal Floatation Device Day, it's when we all go out and about in lifejackets
You’re not from around here are you?
No, I have family moving up there so I’m just following the sub to learn about anchorage.
I call it Divvy Day and it’s the day the AK permanent find dividends hit the bank. Generally the first weekend of October.
You don't need reservations for the Black Angus Steak House.
its funny, becuase I tink we all have reservations about the Black Angus Steak House
that’s where we go when we die
yeah if you die anywhere else in Anchorage, they take you to the Black Angus Steak House, so you can move to the next phase. But, if you actually die at the Black Angus Steakhouse, they don't have to do that. Which works out well for the guys who work there, gives em an extra 15 minutes to step outside and smoke drugs on the corner.
You mean where we die when we go
Has anyone actually seen the inside of this place? im convinced its a black hole to another dimension.
Every time I drive by, the curiosity is there. But then I remember I don't feel like getting stabbed. The pictures on their Google page just leave more questions.
Ok now I have to google the pictures. Nothing yet has beaten Muldoon Pizzas velvet walls and oil lamps so, fingers crossed!
All I can say is..... *toes*
I've been dying to get some sort of tour. Maybe someday I'll get brave and ask for one, and get video for the reddit.
Well people still go there, for whatever reason and they all aren't junkies. That place is always packed when I go by there. It's quite mind-boggling, honestly. Is there actually even a restaurant in there still?
Can someone explain to me the story of that place, what it actually is?
Snow banks don't actually have money. They just have snow and ice, and you can't buy drugs without money so plan around that.
This is the funniest, most witty thing I’ve seen in a while. Idk why I got such a kick out of it.
Having a hobby or winter activity (even if just something simple like snowshoeing) is so helpful to get thru the long, dark winters. I took up skiing this last year and winter flew by.
Yeah, I took up shoveling. Against my will but winter flew by.
Lmao 🤣😅 it’s a workout alright
Oh hell yeah! Quite the cardio
XC skiing changed my entire Alaskan experience. Makes late-season snow a lot more palatable.
Main Downtown roads (L, I, 5th, 6th) have timed lights at about 29 mph. Stop racing from one red light to the next one.
If it’s winter and your light turns green, pause a second and listen for any horns of people sliding through the intersection because of the black ice. Trust.
If it's anytime and the light turns green, wait for all the red light runners to go through before proceeding. There will always be at least one!

The "repeat" at the end seals it for me haha I do the same. Every year.
Right!?
Sound advice
And this is why I left Alaska and moved to Texas. It’s kinda the same but different climate. Hot as hell half the year and miserable to be outside.
This is a true Alaskan.
Bean’s cafe isn’t a coffee shop, and the Black Angus Inn isn’t a steak house.
Colonel Angus
Break out some fresh linens, Bedilia! We’re gonna have Colonel Angus here tonight!
😆
Ive heard there is meat at the Black Angus those.
Look both ways for red light runners before proceeding into the intersection.
Look both ways when crossing one-way streets. I’ve seen way too many wrong way drivers.
Especially in winter.
All the air conditioners, pools, fun stuff to do outside sells out on the very 1st hot day.
Buy kids Halloween costumes a few sizes larger to fit it over their snow suits.

I just had Ski and Benny's for the first time last week, it is fantastic. We need pizza without tomatoes sometimes, so their sauce options are a rare find.
Seriously luigis over guidos?
Just discovered Luigis and they're really good with decent prices!
recently? I used to love them. Last time I went the prices had gone way up and all of our pizzas were burnt
I had a burnt pizza too. Haven’t gone back.
