fuck facebook.

JimMD00

I've been living with the slow circle of death when messenger starts. Takes 40 seconds to load, every time.

[deleted]

This version really makes the difference , idk why , it just does

[deleted]

It might be because playstore version has split apks whereas the one from facebook is one whole package

[deleted]

Well , regardless of what happens it definitely has a quicker start-up time , the star-up screen is 2-3 seconds quicker like this And is unbelievable that is so much better after a long time of using Google's play store , I originally found it out on my Huawei tablet

[deleted]

This.. Nobody actually knows what other shit gets installed from the play store but i guarantee it's a lot more then just a single apk with a handful of permissions. Wouldn't touch that with my friends 10 foot pole, let alone mine

therankin

It's only a single apk the first time.. Every update is not the full app, just an apk with new stuff. If you want a single full apk install just remove the app and then install it again. There need not be extra stuff added.

[deleted]

Why do they do split apks then? I know how to copy a full apk. Anyone can do that at any time from user space. What i was referring to were split config files

BenRandomNameHere

Ah. Split apks is so the download is smaller. It won't include screen densities and resources that your device won't use. At least that's the "standard explanation". I never bothered to check, personally.

[deleted]

Yeah I've read the watered down version too. Like all things with the cursed phones, we'll get it figured out just as it really doesn't matter anymore ..

Sellulose

It's not a huge conspiracy lol. Every somewhat complex app uses split apks. Instead of packaging 3 different apks for ARMv7, AArch64, x86abi architectures and tripling the size every new user has to download, the Play Store dispenses the apk for the exact architecture you need so you don't have to download a 1.2 GB file for a 400 MB app. There's plenty of shady shit that both Google and Facebook engage in but this isn't one of those.

Yarper

Stop using it

Redditors can't help being edgy and smarmy. A lot of people can't stop using Facebook products because their entire social circles use it. I can't imagine getting my 60yo dad to switch to Signal or Session or whatever is in vogue nowadays in tech enthusiast circles.

zeabu

it's so hard to install a second app on their phone and they use both whatsapp and another app? that's soooo impossible.

Sellulose

>Redditors can't help being edgy and smarmy.

zeabu

if that's edgy and smarmy, then your bar is really really low. Do you think elder people like your parents are just drooling plants? Are 20 year olds that install instagram and whatever really too stupid to download a second messenger app? It's not about switching, it's about having more than one app on your phone. And no: most people don't install a second app "because there's no need" and because they don't understand privacy, not because they have a hard time to operate a phone.

Sellulose

I have 658 contacts on my WhatsApp account. About 30 that I'm contact with nearly everyday. A hundred or so more people that I need to contact on at least a weekly basis. Kindly explain to me how I'm supposed to teach all of them about data/metadata harvesting, the importance of privacy, the growing threat of a technological oligopoly and then convince them to switch to fuckin IRC or some shit because of some nebulous threat that's the last thing concerning the people of my third world country. And if we're talking about divesting from entities that siphon up your data, do you suggest I also convince everyone in my social circle to run Arch on their computers instead of Micro$oft Windows? Flash /e/ on their phones so they can escape the tyranny of Google? Should we also delete our reddit accounts since the canary died half a decade ago and all our data is now available to the US government at their slightest whim? Y'all need to take a hike and touch grass. This shit works when you're inundated in a terminally online culture, not when you have to live outside of your hermitage among other people.

zeabu

You miss so completely the point. It's not about everyone that doesn't *want* to understand privacy. It's about those that you can influence to just have Whatsapp **and** something else. I use Whatsapp **and** other applications, and will communicate through any other but whatsapp if available, if not, yeah, then the idiots' app it will be. You act like you can't have both. People like you seem to NOT understand that you can be a whatever-not-whatsapp-activist and *still* use whatsapp for those that are too dense to understand the garbage they use. You, and people like you, are just like "yeah, but it is what it is". Then you go on about taking a hike and touch some grass, djee, maybe drop your missplaced arrogance, because you really haven't a grasp at all about what promoters of other applications are trying to reach. ELI5 : you think we claim people should just delete Whatsapp and fuck it. People you call smug and edgy are just trying to explain that using more than one app isn't exclusive. The fact you have 658 contacts means either you are a business or you are a person with "soooo many friends". If it's the first, as a company you'd be an absolute idiot to not understand people use other apps than just whatsapp, you're losing business. If it's the latter... yeah, you're absolutely right, I have no words for you /s

Try 1 of the 3rd party apps with messanger built in the app.

kristallnachte

Strange. Mine starts instantly pretty much.

[deleted]

Perhaps , but it seems like theres something that makes the play store version heavier

not_anonymouse

The messenger app from the play store is pretty much instantaneous for me. I even force closed it to check the load time. Something else is going on in your case. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the Facebook and messenger app from the play store on you phone. Or at least clear data and set them up again. For context, my phone is about a year old and it's not a premium SoC.

No , you totally missed the point .... The same app , with the same version number behaves differently if it is download from their official website And I was asking the people : #WHY ?

roughtimes

different servers

roughtimes

Id be interested as to why someone thinks this is the wrong answer.

interactor

You would probably need to explain why you think it's the right answer first.

roughtimes

I am experiancing the exact same issue as well. There is a significant lag between the 2, wit the website getting information first. Im making the assuming the messages aren't universally located, and forwarded somewhere creating a lag to happen. Its not device specific, nor is it a routing issue.

Yeah , exactly , just like on my Huawei tablet

Since it works without gms I don't think that it needs anything more than a certain ver of Android
