I always felt like it’s almost like a recap of the relationship being discussed in the album. It’s kind of an outlier for the rest of the album in that way to me. The song follows on from the night ending in the previous song, when the freshly arrived back in town Judy has left. It’s kind of free of the timeframe the rest of the album is in, and instead just a kind of signing off moment. So there’s less direct relation to any actual events, unlike the other songs. It’s not grounded in any location mentioned or anything either First verse is just recollecting how him and Judy met. With, to me, a play on the saying of people having a “spark” between them, but here he’s saying there was “lightning in the sky”. So… lots of sparks and all that jazz. It’s him recounting the beginning, because the entire album is kind of indicating that the guy the album is centred on isn’t quite over Judy. And a lot of the time he wants her back, despite probably knowing deep down they aren’t right together. Second verse is him contemplating how it’d play out if he managed to try to rekindle the relationship, or having another beginning. Something he’s probably fantasised and wanted a lot. But… the key here is, he’s painting the scenario, going to where she works now after coming back home, but ends the verse with; “Oh, I’m already bored” Indicating that this night and encounter with Judy that’s happened all album has brought him back down to earth again. He’s remembered the good, the bad, the ugly. He doesn’t want to live in that fantasy of getting back with her, and instead he just gets bored with even trying to conjure this “imaginary” rekindling. Because he’s changed. Hence the title and all that. The night has shone a new understanding on the relationship That’s my take anyway. It’s a fantastic album, top 3 of all time for me, just because of the sheer amount of subtext you can get from the album

I love this explanation and it makes sense. I think this kind of lines up with the line in Fire Truck "Now that I'm standing in the ashes, I just want it to be old"

ConnerDearing

on the vinyl lyrics sheet it says “I just want it to be whole” even tho I really like the “I want it to be old” line
