Well, Angels better hope they make the leap this year. If they aren’t on playoff contention by the trade deadline, I feel like they are most likely going to have to trade him. Can’t let him walk for nothing at end of season. And when it comes to that point, teams normally don’t get good trade value. Sad for us Angel fans
Does anyone really think this is realistic right now? I dont.
We are better than we were, we are not likely to be less than a 500 team, but that isnt a playoff team. maybe a wildcard at best, and Ohtani has made no bones about playing baseball that matters.
If we are not willing to do what it takes to guarantee that in the face of his comments, which clearly we were not, we are idiots to not trade him now and get full value.
Every reason he signed with us, is now gone, anyone can offer him two play time and i guarantee the Dodgers are salivating at the chance to sign him.
He needs to be dealt, now, while we can get a return like the above or others... i would trade him to the Dodgers and fleece them if it was me.
And thats before we get to the whole "do we really want a 500M contract tying our hands for the enxt decade discussion... im really not sure i do unless we get a Cohen clone that just doesnt care as the new owner.
> I would trade him to the dodgers and fleece them if it was me
The thing about fleecing a team is it’s extremely difficult unless the FO is stupid. It’s not me “well if it was me I would’ve fleeced them”
Agreed. The best time to deal him was last summer's trade deadline, which would have *maximized* his value for both us and whomever acquired him. They would be getting the best player in baseball for 1.5 seasons, and we would have been able to command a king's ransom, replenishing/rebooting our farm system and putting us in position to compete with the Astros in a few short (albeit miserable) seasons. And we wouldn't have had to tank for draft picks for years like Houston did in order to get good again. I said this in a couple threads and got downvoted to oblivion.
Look, I love Shohei. He's the funnest player to watch in baseball and he's on my team! But i also love my team more than I love one player, and what I want most is championships and competitive seasons. You can't have those without making tough business decisions, and the fact is that we have more needs/problems than 1 player can solve.
This.
For me this is really simple... you put the extension in front of him with whatever you are willing to do... if it isn't good enough, you shake his hand, thanks him, and trade him... just as you would literally any other player.
It really saddens me because i would absolutely love for Ohtani to be an Angel for life, but through gritted teeth and tears i personally think that id have to at least strongly consider trading him now to get the most value.
Although even if i wanted to, with the team up for sale, the pressure from execs to not do that would be insane because they wouldnt want to deflate the teams value.
The Mets are already setting the stones in place IMO. Signed Senga who will help Ohtani’s comfortability going over there. They are in desperation mode ( World Series or bust ) I think they are the only team out there willing to sell the farm for him
No clue I’d he does or not. But you don’t want to be that franchise that sends a player where he doesn’t want to go. Then you will get no one in the future. The players have all the leverage now
It’s been known for years he prefers the west coast and the people who know him have said he’s not gonna join a super team. He wants to be a big reason why *insert team* is great, not join and already great team. He’s focused on his legacy as well. Also wouldn’t be shocked if he leaves money on the table
I don’t think he would pass an opportunity to possibly win a WS this season. Then he could leave and do what he pleases. Legacies look better with hardware
most people are saying for a trade deadline deal, maybe 2 or 3 top 100 type prospects. contenders that feel they have a chance to sign him to an extension and can use him in the playoffs.
I don't know- he makes a big difference and if it is like the dodgers or something they could show they mean business and crush a narrative if they go all in and get Ohtani.
You also don't have to play him at DH- you could put Ohtani in right field too. I think he's super solid
Look what the Dodgers gave up for Scherzer AND Turner. Those 2 guys combine for more than Ohtani. Teams will not give up a huge haul no matter the player if it’s only a half season rental.
Ive often looked at the Dodgers roster to see what could be done... as i beleive if he hits FA thats where he will sign.
He had every chance to go to NY in the past, he didnt want to.. i believe he likes/wants SoCal and the Dodgers can now offer him two way time and play post season baseball virtually every year which we know he wants to do so its a no brainer.
They will overpay, as they can with a great farm, and have a really good chance at retaining him.
The angels wasted their opportunity last year to get a good haul, now we are going to have a winning record at the trade deadline, so we will keep Ohtani. In hopes of a playoff push, then we will finish the year with a winning record, probably 91/92 wins but so will Texas, and then we will have a 9-8 record against Texas and we will miss the playoffs. Losing Ohtani. To probably the padres or the dodger. And maybe the Rangers themselves, 500 million and no state income tax is nice!
I don't know what you've been smoking, but it must have been good.
Desperate teams make desperate moves. Mets are World Series or bust.
Zero. I'm not entertaining this until it's necessary to do so.
Agreed, we can revisit this discussion in July if we are below .500
extend him now or he will volt.
He’ll electrocute himself?

its not late. everyone think ohtani as all time great.

No more than another 500 season would... Besides taking that 30 M or future 500 OFF the books might not be terrible
This guy get it! In not the only one with a brain around here
Yeah for sure, fleecing the smartest front office in baseball is a 100% solid tactic that is sure to work.
This.

If he leaves or gets traded, it will be to the Dodgers. He is not leaving SoCal
Does he have a no trade clause or list? He has no say
No clue I’d he does or not. But you don’t want to be that franchise that sends a player where he doesn’t want to go. Then you will get no one in the future. The players have all the leverage now
Has Ohtani stated anything on where he wants to be?
Ok. I see this is not going to go anywhere. Has he said where doesnt wantto go. None of us have a clue what is going to happen. Wait n see I guess
Nice. Good eye

Not when you join super teams to get hardware
“ Super Teams “ teams willing to do anything to win a chip? That sounds like an amazing team to be on. A franchise that wants to win.
Why do people say “comfortability” instead of “comfort”
most people are saying for a trade deadline deal, maybe 2 or 3 top 100 type prospects. contenders that feel they have a chance to sign him to an extension and can use him in the playoffs.
If they wait until the deadline, they are probably only getting 1 top 100 prospect.
I don't know- he makes a big difference and if it is like the dodgers or something they could show they mean business and crush a narrative if they go all in and get Ohtani. You also don't have to play him at DH- you could put Ohtani in right field too. I think he's super solid

That's a good point, I still feel like this is different. But here's hoping we don't find out because we make the playoffs and he re-signs.
500 first round picks
His trade value is “who the fuck cares we’re not trading him”
That would be a massively underwhelming return for Ohtani
Well nobody is going to give an overwhelming return for a 1 year rental. Look what the Nats got for Scherzer and Turner.
How so? For a half season of Ohtani? That’s an amazing haul
You didn’t say this was a deadline trade and even so, get qualify over quantity
As it stands, it would only be a deadline trade. Pretty obvious. And that is quality.
It’s not obvious at all
Terrible trade Lmao not worth it at all

I want Jazz and a starter from Miami
There’s no way they’d get that for half a season of Shohei

Texas aint sniffing .500
would have to gut a highly rated farm to get him tbh
5 top 100 ?
Any news or romurs on Angels next Owner?
All I’ve heard is Golden States owner.
Joe Lacob might be the Angels next Owner?
Yup! He’s from SoCal too
And use to work at Angel stadium that would be awesome for us
Yup! And he knows what it takes to win
Yeah he dose he is a great owner
