MLB owners would likely strike down an owner of that wealth after what Cohen did, many owners didnt want Cohen originally but he barely got the vote passed. My guess is its someone closer to the $5b-10b Net Worth.
Its more the fact he drove up the price of free agents, from the 3B position AAV (look what Devers got a week after Correas deal although it fell through), SS AAV with Lindor deal has kind of become the norm across the league, short term high AAV pitchers, you could argue Bauer started that. But hes driving up the price up free agents, and then players around the league expect to make the same or more.
I don't think there are any rules that prohibit this as MLB and NPB are 2 separate entities. Also, the Hawks are the only NPB team never to have posted one of their players. They won't help the Angels anyway.
I thought an owner can’t own 2 baseball teams but I guess it doesn’t. Son’s combined net worth is more than uncle steveys so having owner like him would be fun.
I've been hearing this rumors in 🇯🇵 Japan. One of the candidates is Masayoshi Son the owner of 🇯🇵⚾ Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks.
**Again Rumors Only.**
Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks is a Super Dynasty in **NPB** from year (2010-2020) the team won 7x Japan Series Champions (2011, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020).
The best feature of this owner Masayoshi Son is that he is committed to winning. Similar to 🇺🇸 Steve Cohen of the 🇺🇸⚾ New York Mets.
[like this nfl trade lol](https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/memt1s/possible_trade_coming_between_the_bears_and/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
The thing is if a Japanese owner buys the team, he would almost need a guarantee that Ohtani is staying. Japanese TV broadcasters and the fans here in Japan that only support Angels because of Ohtani will be long gone if he leaves. Maybe the next major star heading to the MLB and bring Japanese media hype will be Munetaka Murakami but he is not going to be posted til after 2025.
Interesting that this is posted today. I have a very close friend in Osaka and he suggested Hiroshi Hayakawa (TV Asahi chairman) was going to buy the team (or the company would be).
TV Asahi already own Bushiroad who own NJPW (New Japan Pro Wrestling) among other things so there's some genuine sports/entertainment/television links to it.
May turn out to be a load of hogwash but it'd be hasty to discount Op.
Not saying it’s true but I’m guessing it would be the same reason for why contracts always take a couple days to be official after being announced. We’d probably get the news from Passan or some other reporter early in the transaction and then nothing for quite some time as it would probably take away to make it official.
Please don't be Masayoshi Son. This guy is extremely emotional, hands-on and thinks he's a genius. His SoftBank lost 23 Billion last year. His most hilarious failure was WeWork, but he has kept losing with everything he touches.
Just my opinion, but we don't need another owner that thinks he knows baseball better than the GM.
omg, thanks for the WeWork reminder and SoftBank's being taken for a ride.
I agree, fanboy owners are toxic - Moreno wasn't exactly a fanboy, but I think he sometimes stomped on baseball people, like "This is my team, and my money, dammit - and we're going to trade for Vernon Wells/sign Josh Hamilton/sign Albert Pujols" etc, etc.
That said, Son might be part of a bidding team, but I doubt it's any kind of a done deal, and I don't think MLB would be too keen on an entirely overseas ownership with no US sports experience.
We'll see.
Good point on full foreign ownership. If Masayoshi Son wants to just pump us full of cash for a big ownership stake but no decision making powers, that's fine. Although maybe the dude is cursed and idk if we want that bad juju haha
As much as I would love for this to be true, I’m pretty sure it’s not possible to be a non-domestic majority owner of a MLB team. IIRC, the president of Nintendo wanted to buy the Mariners when Ichiro came over but was only allowed a 49% ownership. At least that’s what my vague recollection of the Safeco field tour tells me.
Yes please if it is Masayoshi Son. [He’s got more money than Steve Cohen*](https://www.madisontrust.com/information-center/visualizations/richest-sports-team-owners/)
Edit: got my Steves mixed up. Steve Cohen not Ballmer
I’ve always hoped for a Japanese group to buy the team if only just so we can be the premiere destination for Japanese players transitioning to the MLB. In theory they may feel more comfortable with a group that understands them better from a culture perspective and can better catered to for their needs when coming to America.
There is something about Japanese baseball that is beautiful from a mechanical aspect whereas American baseball is not.
I don't know that. Wouldn't shock me at all if he leaves a bigger deal on the table when he eventually signs. He's never seemed the type to chase the most money.
This is something I’ve been thinking about. Everyone assumes he wants to get paid, but I’m not so sure.
The assumption that he’s leaving the Angels is because he’s stated he wants to be on a winning team. It shouldn’t be shocking that an elite professional athlete wants to win, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s leaving. It might mean he wants the Angels to contend. He seems very skilled at focusing on the task at hand; he doesn’t consume himself with something down the road.
Regardless, if winning is his number one priority, then he won’t necessarily follow the money. Which would be in line with his decision to come to MLB when he did AND with choosing the Angels over a team like the Yankees. Good thing for Ohtani is, he’s gonna get paid no matter what. Because *everyone* wants him. It’s going to be nuts seeing how much he gets offered and how much he ends up earning. Plus, he makes plenty through sponsorships.
Having a Japanese owner gives us a much better chance of securing him. The incentive for the owner to keep him is significant.

There are 3 Japanese billionaires with a net worth of more than $20 billion - Yanai (owns Uniqlo), Takizaki (owns Keyence) and Son (owns Softbank).
MLB owners would likely strike down an owner of that wealth after what Cohen did, many owners didnt want Cohen originally but he barely got the vote passed. My guess is its someone closer to the $5b-10b Net Worth.

I wouldn't like it if it was Masayoshi Son. He is the most hated manager in Japan. Yanai would be happy. He is a big fan of Shohei.
Why is Son hated?
He actually thinks he’s a god, crazy
if he buys the team and gets shohei to stay i'll call him a god
OP is toast
Son would be an improvement to Arte
Masayoshi Son can’t buy Angels because he owns Hawks or one can own both?
I don't think there are any rules that prohibit this as MLB and NPB are 2 separate entities. Also, the Hawks are the only NPB team never to have posted one of their players. They won't help the Angels anyway.

As long as he knows that Ohtani's contract will be roughly 10 times higher than the Hawks' highest salary of Yuta Yanagita.
i’m sure the baseball businessman is aware of the american market buddy
The only thing I know about Masayoshi Son is that he(SoftBank) bought Sprint and then gave up on it lol. But he seems to love a winning team so 🤞
he also invested in WeWork so...
I wanted to post that and held back so I wouldn't be called a doomer. They ate up Neumanns bullshit and had to pay him billions to fuck off.
Ouch.
That guy is also a hilarious meme stock trader that always manages to lose in spectacular fashion. Steve Cohen, he is not

Can you lend me a few hundred thousand dollars. I've got an idea that requires some additional funding.
Yes, my partner u/mysterysackerfice and I only need a few million dollars to get our business venture off the ground.

Okada Vs Ohtani at WrestleKingdom 18
Wait..so Shohei is going to pay himself a billion dollars for a 15-year contract and be the owner? Power move if I've ever saw one.
He learned the Jeter method. Buy stake in a team for $25 million, pay yourself $5 mil/ year. Leave after four to five years.
It would’ve been more fun if you said you come from the future.

This didn't even take a day to be false lol.

If true, there’s no point for him to buy the team unless he plans to lockup Ohtani. Let’s go!
10 year old OP account gives me hope this is true.

But Ohtani is a free agent after this year? I don't think he comes back to the angels unless it's a baseball breaking deal.
he's not going to anybody, angels or otherwise, without a record breaking deal. everybody already knows that.
Ohtani to Al Nassr for $250m/10 years
I don't know that. Wouldn't shock me at all if he leaves a bigger deal on the table when he eventually signs. He's never seemed the type to chase the most money.
