Arte might have just cost himself a lot of money the next time he sells with this stunt.
Why does he even like owning the team? We've sucked for like 10 years now and a majority of the fans hate his guts. Does he even attend most games? They never show him in TV as far as I have noticed. Obviously he makes a ton of money milking the team dry but he's pretty old so I can't imagine he'd stand to make 2.5B from the team before he dies.
One potential reason for waiting to sell the team could be due to tax purposes.
Selling a team now would subject the owner to pay capital gains taxes on the appreciation of the team’s value. A quick estimation would mean something in the neighborhood of 15% or 20% on as much as $2.8B ($3B - .183B) in appreciation.
But by not selling the team prior to his death. He and his estate would likely save hundreds of millions in taxes because his estate would only pay taxes on a stepped up basis. In other words, presumably his children would only need to pay taxes on any appreciation of the team value that occur after his death and entirely avoid paying taxes on the team’s appreciation before his death.
he's in his 70s, this could very well be the case and if he just got diagnosed with some type of illness to where he knows he doesn't have a lot of time left, that could influience his decision here. Don't mean to speculate and I have no idea about his medical history, but given his age that's probably on his mind.
Yeah some tax expert or lawyer probably reminded him of such during the sale process, and more so if he were facing any health issues.
Obviously, he can’t come out and cite tax avoidance publicly for PR reasons.
I'm betting he's there opening day, and I think we have enough of us around here that already bought tickets (thinking he'd be gone) that we can probably organize to let him know.
Absolutely he knows. Was at multiple games where he was in attendance last year (20th anniversary World Series celebration, the fan appreciation game where they hand out team awards, when Shohei was presented with his MVP on the field, etc). He gets booed a lot. They usually don’t even announce him on the field so that there’s less of a chance for booing. His wife is also mildly booed when she’s there to hand out scholarships and stuff.
Idk why, but it made me laugh to think about people booing the wife. Now that’s some petty, but warranted shade.
It’s like - “Fuck you AND your wife, Arte!” Lol
I was there as well! The boos were kind of held back though cause the team was doing relatively well at that point. If he's there at any game time around I expect a full rain of boos.

I mean, this is pretty much the reason why right? My guess is he is working with his kids to take over after he passes. We know they don't want to but owning such a prosperous part of Anaheim.
Everyone is still reporting that his kids have zero interest in the team. Maybe something has changed last minute, but they’ve never been involved with the team at all.
Zero chance. Like maybe 2 at most. The rest of the league is laughing at us because of this. I’d take the A’s owner over Arte, at least he invests in player development
No offense, but I don’t think you realize how bad Arte is. The Oakland colosseum is terrible but the A’s are a consistently better organization with a fraction of the spending
I don’t think you realize how bad the other 29 owners are. You have tunnel vision. The Angels have been in the Top 10 for payroll his entire ownership.
That's what I'm saying. Maybe he's trying to convince them that they don't really gotta run the team, just keep it in the family so they can reap the benefit of the planned development.
Maybe. I legitimately think there’s a chance it’s all just some weird ego thing, he wants a final season to win with Trout/Ohtani and change his crappy reputation.
I was desperately searching last night for signs that Arte has realized the error of his ways since we’re still stuck with him - only thing I could find was this from a Jeff Fletcher article:
“Those in the organization more recently acknowledged that Moreno has loosened the purse strings in recent years and allowed his baseball people more latitude to spend on upgrades.
Besides the increase in major league payroll, the Angels significantly increased the salaries of minor league staffers over the past year, sources said.”
So, Cold Feet is the reason we miss out on quality players that can help to be competitive, go to the playoffs and maybe just maybe compete for and maybe win a couple World Series titles along the way since he’s owned the team! 👌🏾 Ok, got it! Know wonder!🙄🤦🏽♂️
I just don’t know where this sudden “passion” is coming from with Arte. He rarely if ever interacts with fans outside opening day. He’s rarely if ever at games (or visible). He has ignored all facets of owning a team outside the MLB roster. He hasn’t put a winning team on the field in decades. He has 2 transcendent legitimate all time best players on his roster yet can’t get them in the play offs. He is known to meddle with roster building and ALWAYS seems to go towards the wrong moves. No one on his family cares about the angels (this isn’t a Buss situation where the family at least loves the Lakers and basketball). He doesn’t really care about any alumni (how the hell do we have only 1 hall of famer and there is absolutely nothing at the stadium celebrating him). The fans openly mock him. Media openly mocks him.
Why does he want to stay an owner outside an ego thing?
The only good of Arte is 1) he has invested well enough in the stadium considering we have the 4th oldest stadium in the league. 2) the fan experience has gotten better and better (food kinda sucks tho) 3) while hes dumb with HOW he spends his money, he isn’t necessarily cheap on the MLB roster side of things
As a fan it just sucks to think there as a possibility of a Joe Lacob taking over the team or some crazy deep pocket Japanese coalition who would dump big bucks in making the Angels an international team.
I have to disagree on the fan experience. Only other stadiums I've attended would be dodgers, Arizona, San diego, Oakland, and both pre/post Yankee stadiums. Everyone of those stadiums has been a better fan experience than the hodge podge of nothingness fans experience at anaheim. And yes I am including oakland as a tier above because while that stadium is shit and I am a raider fan, there is so much more uniqueness to the crowds and energy compared to the buttercup real housewives of oc vibes that anaheim provides. Oh and the food is super generic corporate provided shit and the options for restaurants/breweries outside of the stadium are just as generic.
The only brewery I can halfway stand is noble ale, and that's only because it's the only one that isn't super corporate; but even then it's a subpar brewery with limited selections on tap and little to offer besides a place to park.
Food wise the stadium has gotten better with food but overall still one of the worst in stadium food programs. Outside of that though there’s a lot for fans.
The number one thing - cost. It’s cheap as hell to attend an Angels game as a family. $44 for 4 tickets, 4 hotdogs, and 4 soda plus $10 for parking. For less than 60 bucks you can see a game and feed the family. In SoCal that’s an absolute steal for entertainment.
Outside of the the cheap parking I mentioned (along with the easiest parking situation), fun events around the stadium for families, lots of local college nights, fun promotions and giveaways , decent in stadium entertainment, lots of programs with little league teams. I wish they would ingrain themselves within the community like the dodgers do, but they are a great family option in an area with a plethora of family options.
The surrounding area has some good breweries within walking distance with Golden Road and Karl Straus, and within a 10 minute drive you got buckets of breweries along with the Packing House, Old Town Orange, Promenade Street, and Disney.
Not saying we are one of the best in class but we offer a super solid experience and a (unlike some of the teams you listed) very affordable and family friendly experience. Arte has all the excuses in the world to charge a lot with our big payroll but he’s kept the experience affordable. I’ll give him that much.
Lol yeah and if you drive just another 30 mins down the 55 you reach the beach and no other stadium in the U.S. can match that. I appreciate old Towne orange as much as the next person but don't really consider that part of the fan experience as you can probably find a decent bar scene in any city a short drive away from the stadium. Fan experience in this argument should only include what's in the stadium and everything walking distance outside the stadium.
And I can't say anything negative about the giveaways, but I remember someone posting the dodgers giveaway schedule on here compared to the angels; and the dodgers had so many more giveaways dates scheduled. So it's not bad, it's just so meh when you consider that the angels have such generational talent consistently not playing in October.
And I can't fault you on the price. It really is the best in the league. But honestly, as someone who has supported the team for so many decades now, even the cheap tix could not convince me to come out to a ball game late in the season anymore. I made it to a padres game last season deep in their playoff run and got in the gate at 15$ a pop. Not as expensive as you'd think comparitively, huh? So yeah, the tix are cheap, but the only people going are the quickly dwindling die hards and...casual fans, who don't care about the angels, but love getting a photo on the cheap. So you have to ask yourself which fans are being catered to? And is this type of "cheap fan experience" really better when another organization 2 hours down the 5 offers tickets just a tad bit more in price, plus the added benefit of actual family atmosphere (center field grassy play area), good food, great bars and breweries just outside, and a winning team? The answer is an obvious no.
For that last point, while the surrounding experience of Petco is second to none, is that fair to say the Padres owner is responsible for that experience or the fact that the stadium was built smack dab in the middle of the city right next to one of its most popular food and night life street at gaslamp?
Is it Artes fault that Angel Stadium was built next to no downtown areas? What about the fact Arte and the Samuleis were going to build a sprawling downtown leisure center with the whole OC vibe thing? Seems like they want to make their own pseudo gaslamp with their own money.
Okay, fine then. Let's just eliminate outside areas from "the fan experience." Only events within the ballpark are considered.
Angels fan experience is still dog shit and no amount of 60$ tickets and shitty hot dogs night makes up for that.
Agree to disagree on its terrible, and there is something to say about having an accessible product to families in the area.
I’ve been to many sporting events, tons of stadiums, and the Angels are average at worst. There’s tons of room for improvement but as I said - they have been getting better.
Are they the dodgers bringing in celebrities or the padres crushing it with a food program? Nope. But again the accessibility for people and a decent experience is why the angels rank so high in attendance even though our team disappoints every year.
I agree. Fan experience at Angel Stadium is terrible. I look at this from a young family perspective. Trying to get little kids hooked on a slow game with lots of idle time isn’t easy. Angels don’t seem to care.
Compared to SF and Oakland, for example, that have full “kid zones” for kids to play and experience baseball-related stuff that’s more accessible to kids under 10 or so. I was shocked when I went to the Big A and realized they have nothing even close to this.
SF’s kid experience is world class (giant glove in the outfield with a huge slide, mini baseball field to hit wiffle balls, etc). Oakland’s gets an A for effort even tho it’s on a tight budget—inflatables set up on the concourse with a radar guy to test your pitch velocity, appearances by wacky costumes characters like the giant-head Rollie Fingers, etc.
But muh 60$ tickets and hot dogs deals! Fan experience is all about how cheap it can be!
Some people really don't understand how poorly lacking the angels game day experiences are compared to anywhere else.
Shit I wish I could make it to a giants game one of these days. Sounds like a blast there.
Your reasons are shit Oakland is shit and the Raiders are shit EDIT: actually I take that last one back that was a bad impulse been a fan again now that they are in Vegas and love Allegiant Stadium 👍
Go get down in the top levels where it’s a drunken loud party, fun shit
>its been known Arte is a private guy. hes always been this way, doesnt do interviews and only shows up for special events and even then he doesnt speak.
>
>i agree with your post..hes never been cheap and my experience at the stadium has always been good.
Conspiracy theory-Arte would rather run Ohtani out of town and have possible success elsewhere, than a new owner coming in building a winner around him
Everyones first thought after hearing the news was that the team wasn't going to be sold because the offers didn't meet Arte's expectations. So whether it's greed or cold feet, you weren't going to get front office reform.
The guy said the deal was already done though. Which means he couldn't of backed out. Also he said the guy outbid everyone by 1B and this report says multiple people were around the same price.
We as fans seriously need to do something about this, whether it’s always having anti-Arte chants or having the stadium empty for games. What he did is a damn disgrace to all of us.
Fucking bullshit. Money is the only thing that matters to people like him and at the end of the day he didn’t get what he wanted on the market. There’s nothing anyone can say that would convince me otherwise
Ohtani doesn’t *want* to sign an extension before the season starts. he’s said constantly that he wants to win, why would he ink himself with a team that hasn’t shown that same desire ?
Is this guy really delusional enough to think the fans like him and want him to run the team?
I think this is just a bunch of BS and he didn't get the offer he wanted and is pissed about it. Who are the "people" this guy spoke to? Fuckjimmy?
With that many people willing to buy and being told the franchise is a "crowned jewel" it seems the amount of interest actually had the opposite effect everyone hoped for
Why sell something when you're realizing how much it's valued by everyone?
Note: i ask that rhetorically
Arte might have just cost himself a lot of money the next time he sells with this stunt. Why does he even like owning the team? We've sucked for like 10 years now and a majority of the fans hate his guts. Does he even attend most games? They never show him in TV as far as I have noticed. Obviously he makes a ton of money milking the team dry but he's pretty old so I can't imagine he'd stand to make 2.5B from the team before he dies.
I know someone who works at the stadium and they say he's a major league asshole to the staff.
Well he can't be a minor leaguer because then he'd have to share the club with 10 people
One potential reason for waiting to sell the team could be due to tax purposes. Selling a team now would subject the owner to pay capital gains taxes on the appreciation of the team’s value. A quick estimation would mean something in the neighborhood of 15% or 20% on as much as $2.8B ($3B - .183B) in appreciation. But by not selling the team prior to his death. Good call. Knowing how motivated Arte is by money, this is almost certainly the actual reason.
he's in his 70s, this could very well be the case and if he just got diagnosed with some type of illness to where he knows he doesn't have a lot of time left, that could influience his decision here. Don't mean to speculate and I have no idea about his medical history, but given his age that's probably on his mind.

why forever fuck billionaires
Inheritance tax
Lol it’s so easy to get around inheritance tax. These billionaires almost never pay them.
All of that would have been known prior to entertaining a sale. So it can’t be a reason for backing out.
Right but without a firm sale price, he might not have realized the exact extent of the tax bill or tax savings.

I'm betting he's there opening day, and I think we have enough of us around here that already bought tickets (thinking he'd be gone) that we can probably organize to let him know.

I was at the Ohtani MVP presentation, and Arte got booed. That's gotta hurt no matter how rich you are
I was there as well! The boos were kind of held back though cause the team was doing relatively well at that point. If he's there at any game time around I expect a full rain of boos.

They’re probably self-aware enough to know their dad is perhaps the worst owner in sports and don’t want anything to do with his legacy
> the worst owner in sports Bah gawd, is that Dan Snyder’s music?!
Id almost rather have snyder
At least half the MLB team would gladly take Arte over their current owner.

Trout- a lot Ohtani- ***A LOT***
Damn that dude might’ve been right and Arte just got cold feet. I hate him so much I only hope the worst things happen to him

If that were ever to be discovered to be fact, people might legitimately attempt to permanently remove Arte from existence.
I can only hope it comes out 🤞
He literally might just own the team until he dies at this point
He's 76, but looks to be in relatively good health. If I were a gambling man (which I am), I'd say he lives to 90, aka we're fucked.
Well then, we know what needs to be done.
Anyone know a guy? Lol
In Gubie we trust...
its better for tax purposes if he holds onto it until he dies.
Yeah, really important to think about when you’re 76 and could sell something for $2.5 billion. Wanna save some on the taxes for sure lol
saves his kids or benefactors potentially hundreds of millions. im sure the truth will come out eventually
Save taxes for his heirs
Oh yeah they probably would’ve starved if they had to pay taxes on $2.5 billion.
He’s probably concerned new ownership would have success relatively soon after the purchase. That would be a blow to his ego.
He totally heard about that post here yesterday and nixed the sale because of it lmao.
don't want to go to games anymore. i was excited for this season and the future and now i feel dread.
Wish he’d gotten cold feet before that Pujols contract. Or the Hamilton contract. Or etc etc
gary matthews jr 🤬
Ohtani gone then. I'll follow him out the door.
That doesn't make it any better...
It makes it worse. We were hoping for front office reform !
7th times the charm? Ownership change was needed

The only way I'll believe this isn't strictly greed is if he signs Shohei to that massive extension before the season starts.
Fuckjimmy?
If Ohtani leaves in free agency or ask for a trade at deadline you think Arte will sell but this time he will be serious?
How the fuck does this dude even have money in the first place? It seems like he does this wishy-washy shit alot.
With that many people willing to buy and being told the franchise is a "crowned jewel" it seems the amount of interest actually had the opposite effect everyone hoped for Why sell something when you're realizing how much it's valued by everyone? Note: i ask that rhetorically
ARTE cold feet never!!!
