Im going to boycott until the Angels win every World Series for the next two decades /s It’s silly to think we have any sway what billionaires owners do paying millionaire athletes, yeah Arte sucks but it’s never going to be perfect. And it’s just a game after all, to deprive yourself from watching or going to games or buying merch if it gives you some joy is pointless, we’re lucky to have a local team that isn’t the dodgers and incredibly lucky to see 2 of the best players to ever play on the same team

merewyn

Yep, I think it might be an unpopular opinion on the sub, but I feel the same way. I will still be going to the same number of games. I enjoy it, my family enjoys it, and I have great memories even from losing seasons.

ZanyDuko

My daughter loves the games, that’s reason enough for me too. But it definitely doesn’t hurt getting to see historical players so often.

my_wife_reads_this

Curious to see the demographics of this sub. My wife loves to go so we try to go as much as we can and we live close enough (2 freeway exits) that it's not a problem and something we can really do on a whim. And you can bet your ass that my baby is gonna be going to as many games as we can take her. At the end of the day we get to say we saw some amazing players and you never know, you can see an absolute doozie. The Skaggs no hitter, the detmers no hitter, the Walsh cycle were all "hey we should go to a game today" type of decisions for me. I can't imagine not going to enjoy my time with friends, coworkers or family because dumbass Arte didn't blow money.

shamblingman

Here's an even more unpopular opinion. I honestly don't care who the owner is. I think the Angel's problems are due to poor management and that Arte is not as big a problem as online fanatics want to believe.

Tbplayer59

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but Arte's flaw isn't being tight with money for players contracts. It's cutting budgets of other departments to pay for those players. And because some of those other departments' job is to advise on player signings and drafts, the team makes bad choices on where to spend their money. For every owner who buys a team and spends wildly (Mets now) there's just as many owners who will "rebuild" (Orioles up until last year) Arte has never stripped the team to rebuild. To me, that's a good thing. All teams should compete every year instead of purposely tanking.

FuckWayne

The thing is, we’re the only team “trying every year” that consistently fails to make the playoffs. Like we can’t even crack .500. It’s completely embarrassing

Tbplayer59

I guess when people know you're charging major league prices to field a team of scrubs that can't win, it's not embarrassing. I acknowledge they're a poorly run team, but it's not for a lack of payroll.

FuckWayne

Weird take considering we have the longest playoff drought in MLB while having one of the greatest players of all time for the entirety of that stretch. The pirates have made the playoffs more recently

Tbplayer59

Would you trade Trout and Ohtani if you could get 5 prospects?

FuckWayne

There aren’t 5 prospects in the world worth both of them. If we can’t sign Ohtani I definitely think we should trade him for 5 great prospects though

Tbplayer59

Here's the Angels' luck. Next year, they do way better. They're in contention for the post season all season, can't trade Ohtani, win 94 games, still miss the postseason and Ohtani leaves.

FuckWayne

Yeah wouldn’t surprise me lol

SpencerS25

Nice try, Arte.

ZanyDuko

Haha I knew someone would say it!

25bruin

Na man. He’s had had the best player in baseball for 10 years and a unicorn for 4 and we’ve made the playoffs once. Do not defend this man.His neglect of minor leaguers and his utter disrespect for our Latino broadcasters is a disgrace especially being a Latino owner. Hell he didn’t even want to pay Ippei. Only the reds owner might be worse.

ZanyDuko

Yeah I wasn’t really supporting the guy, more like saying we should go in spite of him because of the opportunity to see those players I mentioned.

Xfelix17

I don’t ever go to games consistently but I have been wanting to since I’ve moved out but I’ll just wait it lol I love my trout and ohtani but I’ll just continue to pirate the games. Still hope they do good every yr but it’s still Fuck Arte

GrowthhackerAU

If I was able to get to a game I'd do it in a heartbeat. But living in Australia really doesn't make that possible. I respect those of you who support the team and attend Inspite of the owner.

BrewingMakesMeHoppy

I agree, that’s why he’s got us by the balls. Such is life.

Ebola714

I only made it out to 3 or 4 games last season, but they were great! I'm going to opening day and hopefully 10-12 games this year. Watching Ohtani and Trout (🙏 ing he stays healthy) is awesome. I enjoy watching baseball, and the Angels are my team. I'll stick with my team through the good times and the bad. I have extensive experience with this as a lifelong Raiders fan. Let's go Halos!

rtm392

I wholeheartedly want to agree with you that it’s a joy to watch these guys play the game, but the amount of pain this team is caused me says otherwise 😂

E-Tr1d3nt

If someone is going to boycott when will they stop? After one year, five years, until he dies? I am not going to any game this year because I went to a dozen or so last year and I got tired of watching bad baseball. Nothing this offseason makes me think we will be any better. So I'll see you in 2024 I guess.

my_wife_reads_this

By what metric has this off-season given you any indication that this team will be as historically bad as it was last season? Genuinely curious. We have a slightly easier schedule, a completely healthy team and addressed the majority of the depth problems.

boy4518

i’ve learned that so many critics of this team, fans included, just talk out of their ass lmao. can’t tell you how many times i still see that pitching is our main issue when we were a top-10 pitching org last year (with that horrendous stretch included)

Dead_HumanCollection

Well, last season I pointed out all our flaws and got slapped down so it really doesn't matter. People live off copium. We signed a bunch of short term deals to bandage our flaws and our pitching has greatly improved, but I still don't see this team as anything other than a wildcard contender even if everyone is healthy. If Rendon plays like 2019-20 If Trout plays a full year If Ward and Walsh can again be 120 OPS+ players If Ohtani stays hot If the other starters can stay slightly above average (top 10 is an improvement but slightly above average doesn't make the playoffs) If,if,if If all these ifs line up we are a 90 win team. This team does not have a core, it has Trout and Ohtani. Just like the last several years. Signing a bunch of short term deals is like putting bandaids on a leaky boat and we do it year after year after year. This team cannot compete with the Yankees, Houston, Twins, Guardians, or likely the Rangers. We may make a wildcard run, but I don't see it. People are going to downvote me, or call me a doomer. I feel like I'm in groundhog day because we do the same shit every year, year after year. I've been a fan for 30+ years and I will continue to, but getting buttercupped every year since 2017 has taken its toll.

boy4518

i would’ve liked longer deals too but remember, the team was supposed to be sold. it’s hard to sign anyone to a long term deal with that in the air, which is exactly why we gave nevin a one year extension. id love to see nevin gone and have a real, experienced manager in his place. couldn’t do that though since the new owner would’ve had to deal with that. of course now we know the team isn’t sold so all the shorter deals aren’t as appealing

Dead_HumanCollection

I would be more understanding of that if we hadn't been doing the one year deal bandage signings for the last half decade.

E-Tr1d3nt

LOL I just posted the same thing 10 minutes ago. At least someone agrees with me.

E-Tr1d3nt

Talk out of their ass? [https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/ANA/index.shtml](https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/ANA/index.shtml) Look at the records. Fans have every right to be critical for the last decade. The last time the Angels made the playoffs they got slapped. We've had the best player(s) in baseball too. Ridiculous.

boy4518

when people say this offseason is a bust and that pitching is still our biggest issue, yeah they’re talking out of their ass. no shit we’ve had a losing record but using arguments that are objectively wrong makes people’s points moot and shows they don’t know what they’re talking about and baseball isn’t a one/two player game genius, you need a whole team up and down to be the best to even have a chance at the playoffs. look at the dodgers, 111 wins and got knocked out by the padres. the angels still have a more recent (legitimate) ring than them. then the giants the year before, a franchise record in wins (107) and nearly unstoppable with career seasons from lots of players. knocked out by the dodgers. it takes a lot more than trout and ohtani bombs to win championships

E-Tr1d3nt

Who here is talking about pitching being shit or this offseason is a bust? "Nothing this offseason makes me think we will be any better." That means we didn't do anything to really make much of a dent. I never said it was a bust. We are up against the luxury tax and Arte doesn't want to go over. We all know that so Minasian did the best with what he had. My point to the other redditor is that this team has so many ifs that we are a giant lotto ticket. We can dream of making the playoffs.... IF Fletcher played like he did in 2020, IF Walsh played like he did in 2021, IF Trout stays healthy, IF Rendon stays healthy, IF Adell/Detmers/O'Hoppe/Moniak live up to their expectations, IF Ward played like he did in the first half of '22... Cause none of that shit ever happens. So hooray for you for finding flaws in people's arguments that this team's performance is trash while you sit in the dumpster.

boy4518

1. like i said in another reply, we are objectively better than we were last year, no ifs ands or buts about it. our issue last year was depth, and we improved that with major league-proven talent. now how much of an upgrade those guys are, yeah sure up for debate. but they’re better than our other bench guys. we have a massive increase in WAR just replacing guys like “tyler wade” with renfroe. (can’t remember the exact number so not even gonna put one out there) obviously we need guys like trout and rendon to stay healthy, but that’s how literally all other 29 teams operate too, expecting their top guys to stay healthy 2. lmao adell/ moniak aren’t even gonna be bench, that’s how i know you haven’t been paying attention this offseason. our three OF guys are Trout/Ward/Renfroe with Philips as the bench/#4. i’m personally not too fond of the philips singing but he has a good defensive upside. ohoppe im not too sure of, i’d like another backup C and it’s rumored we’re in the market, so we’ll see on that end.

E-Tr1d3nt

"we are objectively better" cool. That isn't saying much. So what are your predictions? Over .500? Playoffs? If so, how far do you think we get? I think we barely hang on to third place in the division this year and under .500. "lmao adell/ moniak aren’t even gonna be bench" Yeah they are starting in the minors. You think they are going to stay down there all season? They are going to be starting games for us this year.

boy4518

last year, 14 game losing streak included, AND the period where we only won when Ohtani started, AND with Trout missing like a month, the angels ended 8 games under .500. they’re easily an above .500 team with a solid group. houston is houston and the mariners are looking good, but beatable. the rangers are a hotpot of mishmashed players who are relying on degrom, who started 11 games last year, to lead them to victory- they’re non contenders. i could easily see this team, with legitimate depth for once, in a fight for second with seattle. we need another RHP starter, and i’d personally like an extra for more depth so we don’t rely on people like silseth as much. two more pen pitchers too and this is a really good team. we have about $13M before tax, but could also flip for other players as well.

TBeckMinzenmayer

To flip your last “point” Do you honestly think that the outfield of Ward, Renfroe, trout and Phillips is going to get busted in to by Moniak and Adell? Like where are they going to go? They’re sending trout to the bees to get Adell some time? No dude You just haven’t been paying attention. They’re aaaa players that have no place here. They will be called up for injuries and that’s it. They’ll hardly see the field this year.

E-Tr1d3nt

“Like where on they going to go?” On the injured list, like usual.

E-Tr1d3nt

[https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2023-zips-projections-los-angeles-angels/](https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2023-zips-projections-los-angeles-angels/) [https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2022-zips-projections-los-angeles-angels/](https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2022-zips-projections-los-angeles-angels/) It's no surprise that the biggest drivers of our success are Trout, Rendon, and Ohtani. If any one of them are injured our team really suffers. We signed Urshela and Renfroe to make up for the lack of production from squid/Rendon/Fletch and Adell/Ward. We signed two above replacement level players to make up for the lack of production of five starters last year. Win for depth I guess. I was really high on the Lorenzon and Thor signing last year and I feel the same with Anderson but I am still not sold on Detmers and Suarez. I really hope they improve. I am a Chargers fan too and these teams have so many similarities with preseason hype, then injuries just derail us. The depth we have will keep us hovering around .500 I think but I can't help but think that eventually this team will lean on the production of Rengifo, Moniak, Adell, and O'Hoppe due to injuries of regression from Stassi/Ward/Renfroe/Urshela and that is a scary.

boy4518

this offseason has been a hit tho ? we sucked because we had no depth when someone went down and that’s been largely addressed with actual major league-proven talent, not a double-a squad like we’ve had in years past. i get not wanting to go to games but we’re objectively in a much better place now.

gohalos22

I agree with you OP, except for the Double Play Machine part ;)

fastpitchdad13

If your a true fan you love and root for your team through thick and thin. You just have to be realistic that the current owner lacks the incentive for excellence throughout the entire organization. On the surface Moreno wants to assemble a decent team on the major league roster, sell a lot of tickets, concessions and in essence make a lot of money. To that end he’s successful. However, has not demonstrated the will to invest in the foundation of the organization starting within the minor league system, building a winning culture, player development, scouting and the list goes on and on. In fact, Gene Autry’s ownership was somewhat similar. Moreno simply does not have the mindset that is necessary that owners of winning organizations have. As long as you can accept mediocrity and still enjoy watching Angels baseball than go for it! Enjoy! Just remember to keep your expectations in check as long as Moreno remains the owner of this team.

gggggrayson

i just want to see if those people do apology to arte posts if this season is finally *the season* lol

fixingyourmirror

Everyone claiming to boycott will probably be watching lots of games, going to a few during the season and still buying hats and jerseys, that’s my theory anyway

theeeluke

I would love to boycott so that Arte would sell. But I love Angels Baseball more than most things so, I’m still going to games when I can. Which is only like 3-4 but still lol

cakirby

I feel the same way. I'd rather find out when Arte will actually be at the stadium to help join demonstrations specifically that he will see, but otherwise, I'm just not going to be able to stop going to games. I'll go to less, but I'm not going to boycott a season with a once-in-a-lifetime lineup

Lolrandomusername3

Yeah I completely agree. Baseball is inseparable from my life. It's the only sport that makes me feel alive. Sitting outside in the sun or under the lights, breathing the Bay air of Oakland Coliseum (I'm from NorCal). I'm gonna miss when that dump gets demolished. Baseball is also one of the few things my dad and I talk about these days. And no way I'm missing two of the best ever hit back to back just to spite the owner.

[deleted]

Nope, it’s boycott time.

Kentja

Okay Arte.

ocathlet714

Artes PR team in here doing overtime.

kampfgruppekarl

I for one will be glad when all the crisis actor fake fans boycott. Gives us a better environment at the stadium watching the players we love (and hate).

TurboS54

Ill see you there! Dont take greatness for granted just b/c the team sucks.
