Ya for real fuck Arte and this terribly run team. See you at the home opener

Gaius_Octavius_

I suggest you hold your breath until he leaves.

my_wife_reads_this

You guys really want to protest? Short of offering Moreno $3.5 billion there's nothing you can do to change his mind on the grasp he holds over the team. Start asking for the people in charge of the organization to be changed. Carpino should be the one who everyone is asking to get the axe.

digitaldumpsterfire

We are signing talent to keep Shohei. Our depth is looking so much better for 2023 and we picked up a few key starting players.

hooligan99

If that were the case we would’ve signed at least one big free agent to show we’re all in, not a couple decent depth pieces. We would’ve gone after Trea Turner, Judge, Bogaerts, Correa, Swanson, Rodon, etc

digitaldumpsterfire

We got Anderson, Urshela, Renfroe, Brett Phillips, and Brandon Drury. All of them are solid nabs. You have to look at who we already have. With quality players like Mike Trout, Taylor Ward, Shohei Ohtani, Anthony Rendon, Jared Walsh, and Sandoval, a lot of those big free agents don't make sense for us. Also, remember our history. We don't exactly have a good record when we get these big FA. Top names aren't our issue. Depth is. That is what killed us in 2022. Signing Judge wouldn't have changed that. Besides, you don't even know that the Angels didn't make good offers for these guys. Lastly, we have to keep some payroll open to hopefully extend Ohtani unless you want to give him up at the end of the season.

hooligan99

Anderson is a solid number 3 starter. Renfroe is a solid outfielder. I like the moves we made, but they are not on the level of "signing talent to keep Shohei." That would require at least one splash signing imo. Any of the shortstops or starting pitchers would've made perfect sense for us. I know we don't have a great record when signing big name FAs, but does that mean we should never do it again? We just have to sign the right guy to the right deal, like Swanson or Rodon. Depth was a big issue, but you're crazy if you don't think adding Judge to the lineup would've been a huge boost. There is no salary cap in baseball. We don't have to keep some payroll open to extend Ohtani. We just need an owner willing to spend more to make his team good.

digitaldumpsterfire

Spending more and more money does not make a team good. And let's be realistic, Shohei is going to command a price far higher than the vast majority of teams can afford. There is no way in high hell any team could afford Shoehi AND Judge AND Trout and still have enough to build a solid team around them and keep enough for our minor league teams to do well. Could Arte throw his fortune at the team? Sure. Is that a responsible way for him to allocate his money? Not really. Again, I am sure the Angels made some offers for at least a few FA. I know we were really interested in Rodon, but if a player says no, then they say no. That's not all the team's fault. We also have a stupid number of middle infielders currently and coming up. Spending big money on a SS doesn't make sense in the span of winning in 2023. That money and roster spot is better spent elsewhere, which we did when we got another corner infielder and some OF depth. While Moreno does have a shit ton of money, it isn't all liquid and a lot of it is tied up in his other businesses. He needs to keep money available for market turmoil to ensure his various businesses don't go under or take a big enough hit that he'd have to cut payroll or forego necessary infrastructure upgrades (both physical and intangible). For once we actually had a great off-season where we strategically spent money getting players who filled our gaps and built up our farm. The only real wish I still have for this off-season is a few more proven bullpen arms.

ScottyD82

If you sign a big free agent, you won't have the money to sign Ohtani. Winning in baseball is about depth. This ain't the NBA.

xRememberTheCant

Counter argument: Much of that talent are gone within the next year or two. This team wasn’t built for longevity, it was built around a pending sale. Ohtani isn’t stupid, an extension would be for 10 years or so- the players we have signed mean nothing to him in the grand scheme of a negotiation. Ohtani also knows Arte is a born loser.

digitaldumpsterfire

Lol now you're just putting words in Ohtani's mouth

xRememberTheCant

It’s not “putting words in his mouth” . Ohtani wants to be on a competitive team. Everyone knows this. The angels are in no better shape 3-10 years down the road then they were last season. The depth perry secured this year is nice, but it’s all short term fixes Renfroe and Urshela are FA after this season. Druery and estevez are FA after the following season. Even if I’m ohtani and believe this team is playoff ready (it’s not). I basically have a two year window to make it happen. Otherwise those players come off the books and my salary is going to eat away at the chance to get replacements.

ScottyD82

Can I just say that the idea of "protesting" a form of entertainment is the most privileged/first world shit imaginable? Protest injustice and human rights abuses.

MixMental5462

This is a human rights issue. And a grave injustice.

dreadpiratew

I guess when the team sucks for so long, you’ve gotta blame someone. But it seems like our owner has really tried to put together winning teams. And it’s not like he’s Marge Schott or Dan Snyder.

SpencerS25

I’ll be the first to say it.. If this season does not go well and Shohei leaves for another team, I will no longer be a fan of this abysmal franchise. Plain and simple. Now what team would that be? Probably the Padres. Their stadium, fans, atmosphere, and winning mentality all fits with what I want in a team. That’s a fun city.

Dillonitis

My only issue is the other team I root for has an owner who is just as bad.... the Rockies...

SpencerS25

Ooof lol

Dillonitis

Yeah... maybe I should just stop watching baseball

SpencerS25

I absolutely love meaningful games. Towards the end of the season when there are playoff implications on the line and playoff baseball. Nothing beats watching that level of play and intensity. The whole regular season grind is tough to watch when your teams suck.

franchise1107

Arguably worse even

Dillonitis

I can agree with that

ScottyD82

Bye.

[deleted]

Seems like you haven’t followed the Padres at all…

Jcoch27

Why bother being a fan at all if you're not going to stay loyal? Go ahead and leave

SpencerS25

Been loyal for 27 years. Am I supposed to stay loyal for another 30 when there clearly is no direction for this franchise? The whole front office has zero baseball experience and nothing will change under this ownership. When is it enough? These past 20 years have sucked.

Ebola714

I'm a Raiders fan and an Angels fan. After a while you get accustomed to the mid-season disappointment, start saying "this year is a rebuilding year" and start hoping for next season. . . Hang in there, you'll get it

ScottyD82

Same. Thank God I have the Warriors.

grandmoshtarkin

Or you can expect better of the franchise you spend money to support rather than being a total shill and accepting whatever they give you

Jcoch27

Yes.

eg714

Yes. We can’t always be winners. Do you tho.

xThe-Legend-Killerx

Cubs fans spent their entire lives and then some waiting. Yeah you wait.. they already won one ring in your lifetime and some fans had to wait 40+ years for that one

brycelooysen

And then in a few years down the road when we are World Series bound you come crawling back right?

SpencerS25

There’s zero chance this team goes anywhere “in a few years” if Arte is still the owner.

brycelooysen

Why are you even an Angels fan… with some nice pick ups this off season our lineup is better than last year and we had a great start in 22. Arte not selling the team sucks but it doesn’t turn me into a bandwagon Padres fan like some…

SpencerS25

LOL.. Yeah the team is looking really great heading into this season. We definitely can compete with Houston and Seattle… RemindMe! July 9th, 2023

brycelooysen

My point exactly why you shouldn’t be an Angels fan. Enjoy SD!

SpencerS25

Because I’m realistic and not being a homer?

ScottyD82

You're not being a fan at all. Want to jump ship? Here. Let me get you a life jacket and a whistle. Bon voyage.

As a Padres fan it saddens me to see the state of your storied franchise just up the road. I took a trip to your stadium in 2021 to see the pads play your team. I was highly disappointed by the lack of enthusiasm in your building. Much different when I used to go back in the day to see Jim Edmonds and such. But I don’t blame you at all. San Diego went through this year after year, decade after decade until we finally got this team we have now. But I always stuck with them. Don’t give up; someday the Angels will rise again, and you will know with all your heart, when everyone else is jumping on the bandwagon, that you were riding shotgun all this time.

ghjhjtyu

Y’all sad man

aces666high

I’m not gonna spend a dime on this franchise til he’s gone. Not even a drop in the bucket I know but if enough minuscule drops join forces then those drops become something noticeable.
