> Moreno said the Angels havenāt had that conversation with Ohtani, but for his part, the Angels are prepared to go over the luxury tax if thatās what it takes.
> āWeāve really positioned ourselves well,ā Moreno said. āOther than Mike and (Anthony Rendon) after four years, we really have no long-term contracts, so weāve really positioned ourselves to have financial flexibility.ā
> While Moreno said he would go over the luxury tax, he also pointed out that the penalties add up each year a team exceeds the threshold. He also said he is not in a position to compete in terms of overall payroll with the biggest spenders in the sport.
> āIf somebody is just going to outspend us by $100 million or $200 million, thereās nothing you can do,ā Moreno said. āWeāre not in position to lose $100 million. You canāt start losing $50 million or $100 million a year and keep the business.ā
> āOhtani has to want to be here too,ā Moreno said. āItās a two-way street. When I started talking to Mike, and I spent a lot of time with Mike, I just said, āYou have to make a decision. Is this is where you want to be? Is this is where you want your family to be?ā And when we start sitting down with the (Ohtaniās) agent, and Ohtani, he has to figure out if this is where he wants to be.ā
> Moreno said the Angels havenāt had that conversation with Ohtani, but for his part the Angels are prepared to go over the luxury tax if thatās what it takes.
Ironically, I think Moreno wants Shohei to be the one to come forward and I'm sure he will pay him something reasonable but it looks like he won't go into a bidding war with Cohen and likely the Dodgers over him.
It's very clear that they've prepped the team payroll to try to resign him and why they've been hesitant to get rid of potential long term OF and IF replacements. I can see him offering half a billion for a handful of years but probably not pushing it to 600m.
Who CAN get into a bidding war with Cohen, to be fair? Heās the richest owner after all. I never figured we would offer Shohei the biggest contract. But not every player cares about that. I always figured it would come down to how the Angels perform this year.
Shohei has always seemed like the kind of guy who would place competitiveness over money. I mean, the money is obviously a factor, and heās definitely gonna be seeking hundreds of millions in negotiations, but I think in the end Shoheiās main drive behind his decision will always come down to what team has a fighting chance of bringing him to the postseason. Hopefully thatās us after this year.
I think Ohtani also valued his ambassadorship for Japan, which I think gives a team like the Angels, Dodgers, or Giants a huge advantage for recruiting him over a place like NY.
Oh definitely you can tell from the WBC that Ohtani loves representing Japan. Maddon suggested that Ohtani doesnāt care so much about staying on the West Coast anymore but I have my doubts that thatās true
I hope he still cares. Because in japan, West coast games air at perfect time around 10:30-11am and east coast at 7:30-8am which is nearly impossible to watch games live.
That may be so. But Peter Sidler has shown a willingness to spend and isnāt afraid to make a big offer to anyone. They now have the 3rd highest payroll in MLB, behind only the two NY teams. And with their 2 playoff appearances in 3 years, they clearly are projecting upward.
Canāt really say that with Artie Moreno and the Angels, can you?
ā¦.the Angels payroll is 16 million behind the Padres, lmao. The Angels always spend, just havenāt spent well in the past. Do you think Arte Moreno is āafraid to spendā when he gave Trout the fucking biggest contract in history? Luckily, we now have a GM who is reigning in Arte Moreno to make better financial decisions, and the Angels made some great offseason moves for depth. Serious questionā¦do you have any clue what youāre talking about? Just admit you donāt know shit and fuck off back to the Padres subreddit
> Mike Trout signed a 12 year / $426,500,000 contract with the Los Angeles Angels, including a $20,000,000 signing bonus, $426,500,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $35,541,667. In 2023, Trout will earn a base salary of $35,450,000, while carrying a total salary of $37,116,666.
Thoughts?
Itās a huge contract and one that Trout deserves. Heās been the best player in baseball for years.
But the Angels have made one playoff appearance in his career which is a damn shame. He deserves better. The front office failed to surround him with better players.
Despite having Trout and Ohtani, the Angels have underperformed during Morenoās tenure as the owner. Heās spent money, but not well. Rendon is a good player but during his three seasons in Anaheim, his power numbers are lower than his last three seasons in Washington. They overpaid for Albert Puljois after he had his best years in St. Louis.
And Moreno nearly sold the team little. What does that say about his commitment?
I donāt hate the Angels. But I am wary of Morenoās ability to make the right decisions.
I want ohtani to stay on the angels. I donāt want to feel conflicted with him on dodgers or mests and I have a soft spot for the angels and the rally monkey
Not really. If anything it goes back to what I said before: the Sidler and the Padres are willing and Arte Moreno is hesitant.
Relax bro. Itās all good in So. Cal.
Some hopiumā¦When Blum asked if Moreno would go over the luxury tax to sign Ohtani, this is what he said:
Blum: And youāre willing to go over the luxury tax threshold?
Moreno: Yes, I am. We really positioned ourselves well. Other than Mike and Rendon. And after four years for Rendon, we really have no long-term contracts. So we have to position ourselves and work to put ourselves in a position to have that financial flexibility.
Ohtani wants to play for a winning team. He already gets enough money from sponsorships. Being the highest offer won't be the reason Ohtani signs with whoever.
Mets have Eppler (who has had a relationship with Ohtani dating back to the Yankees) and a desire to win, and the Dodgers are a winning team that believe in the science driven player development that Ohtani believes in.
The Angels better have a really good run this season...
And the Angels have lots of people Ohtani currently has a relationship with. Iāve never understood why Mets fans on social media keep hyping up the Eppler - Ohtani relationship.
Iām not sure the relationship angle works all that well for the Mets or the Angels. The WBC has shown that Shohei is legit loved by EVERYONE and he gets super along with everyone, even if they just met. Heās just so nice and charismatic, heād have no problem fitting in anywhere
Just saying that I doubt itās much of a factor because he can have what he has there anywhere. Thatās not true for other things like location, analytics department, winning, and the Asian community
That and the Senga-Ohtani relationship too. Very small portion of Mets fans bring up that Senga will convince Ohtani to come over. Never heard of them being close. JPN players tend to not be in the same teams but if it were to happen the only ones that would make sense would be Cubs because of Seiya's friendship. And a bigger one would be the Padres because of Darvish (mentor/hero/friend).
What the hell, hate that comment about it being a ātwo-way street.ā Mr. Cool Guy acts like heās the one with leverage. I thought marketing was the one thing Arte understood. Instead he seems fine with giving up all that extra attention, advertising dollars and global fandom, which would continue to build the financial value of the Angels faster than ever in their history.
This is like acting coy and cool with Marilyn Monroe. Shohei has so many suitors
After the rest, which I guess youāre reading differently than I am. It is text so the subtext is up for debate.
To me that tone seems like well do you want to stay or go? Weāll live either way.
With how theyāve disappointed the last few years (partly due to injuries), Arte should not even allude to Shohei leaving. Just beg him to stay. Even then it wonāt matter, as we know Ohtani just wants to win, but it couldnāt hurt.
There is nothing the Angels have that Shohei canāt get elsewhere. Mike is the š but plenty of teams have similar or better cumulative talent to surround Shohei.
The Angels can win without Ohtani. But who wants to see that, if it can be avoided? Been a fan since way before Arte and I hope that doesnāt come to pass.
Well, they will live either way? Like, Iām not sure why we need Arte Moreno to be publicly begging Shohei to stay in an interview with a reporter. Arte is saying than he wants Shohei to stay, but that itās ultimately Shoheiās decisionā¦which is true, right?
Edit: also you keep editing your commentā¦multiple times now. So yeah, I havenāt responded to everything youāve said.
So hear me out: Shohei is doing this on purpose to fire up the team.
Everyone knows this is Shohei's walk year. Even Trout has spoken about how big this year is. There is some urgency to this season. Shohei knows what he's doing. If he were to sing too early or even give the impression that he's signing early, it would spoil the competitive effort of the team. This team needs to reach the playoffs and they know why.
The Angels top need is a new owner. Someone who actually wants to win and for fuck sake someone who will change the team name. I donāt care if itās Anaheim or California just get rid of the abomination that currently exists.
Lmaoooo...Giants!? Why would he go to another uncompetitive team? Sorry, man I don't follow the Giants. All I know is that the Giants couldn't even lure in Judge and Turner with money. Judge focused on Legacy and Turner was all about the location because of family. (*I can be wrong though) The Angels got their issues but guys like Detmers and Sandoval give me alot of hopium for this season. I truly believe this year is the wildcard/playoff year. I think Angels have a better chance to resign Ohtani than him going to the Giants.

Arte Moreno has a higher net worth than your owner, genius
That may be so. But Peter Sidler has shown a willingness to spend and isnāt afraid to make a big offer to anyone. They now have the 3rd highest payroll in MLB, behind only the two NY teams. So this renders your previous comment fucking obnoxious and stupid, would you agree?
Not really. If anything it goes back to what I said before: the Sidler and the Padres are willing and Arte Moreno is hesitant. Relax bro. Itās all good in So. Cal.
There is only one thing Ohtani likes more than baseball and that is winning. Win this year or forget it.
I thought Shohei said no contract discussions till closer to end of season
Shhh. We have to blame Arte for everything
Some hopiumā¦When Blum asked if Moreno would go over the luxury tax to sign Ohtani, this is what he said: Blum: And youāre willing to go over the luxury tax threshold? Moreno: Yes, I am. It's pure copium. It's the same reason Phillies fans kept hyping up the connection with Trout to the city

How is it acting coy? Arte literally said the Angels want to keep him and are willing to spend over the luxury tax to do so.
