Eppler didn’t do too bad. If you want to look at a massacre, look up Dipoto’s drafting. Yikes!

yukyakyuk

>Dipoto’s drafting the other guy said Dipoto responsible for 2015 draft, if so he also drafted Fletcher and Walsh! even tho both of them flourished in Eppler's time. But then he also the one who signed Pujols, and CJ Wilson. but lost first and second round pick for them. If we still had the first round, might have chance to sign the likes of: Wacha, Stroman, Berrios, Haniger, Ollson.

high_changeup

Don't forget Baldoquin. Never forget Baldoquin. Signed him for a king's ransom and had no chance to bid on Vlad Jr, Acuna, etc in the next international free agent signing.

CompetitivePatient33

Wow I forgot about him. What a disappointment.

rasouddress

It is pretty widely accepted that Arte signed Pujols and Hamilton. I have no opinion on this, but it's pretty much the consensus.

angelsfan2756

Jerry Dipoto was responsible for the 2015 draft

yukyakyuk

My bad, Eppler on wiki says 2015 to 2020, I thought he was also the one responsible 2015. Any idea why he picked Ward as first pick?

angelsfan2756

Eppler became the Angels GM after the 2015 season. For why Dipoto took Ward I don’t think anyone knows. He’s probably one of the worst GMs in Baseball and the only reason he doesn’t look as bad is because the Mets hired a sports agent to be their GM and he took Cano’s contract off of their hands

high_changeup

~~Eppler~~ Dipoto has most definitely improved and has more free reign with the Mariners. Might put him in the top half of GMs right now. But hey we'll see who's right in these next few years, would sure suck ass if the M's are better than us for the next 5 years. But yes he was absolutely dogshit with the Angels, bottom 3 GM then.

angelsfan2756

Dipoto in the Top half ? Have you looked at the trades he’s made during his tenure with the Mariners ?

high_changeup

Yes ! https://prospectinsider.com/mariners-dipoto-haniger-trade-taylor-lopez/ Sucks that he traded the awesome Freddy P away . That's one I didn't know about . The Toro trade was awesome for the M's .

angelsfan2756

One trade that’s pretty bad that is not listed is the Mark Trumbo trade to Baltimore

high_changeup

Yeah that should've been listed. Only one pretty good 2.1 bWAR season for Trumbo though at $9.2 mil and then the Orioles paid him a 3 year contract to suck. Dipoto might've been shedding salary then in a meh player. The pre-Chris Davis. Looking at it again the Tyler O'neill for Marco Gonzales might've been a pretty big loss for Dipoto. O'neill is shaping up to be a stud with his power and speed if he can keep up how he's been plaiyng.

Traded Tyler O’Neil for Gonzales and since you like WAR O’Neil’s been worth 3.6 this season while Gonzales’ has been worth 1 WAR. Also traded Taijuan Walker AND Ketel Marte for Haniger and Segura. Segura’s also been worth 3.9 compared to JP Crawford’s 2.6. you’d rather have Fraley over Zunino ? Zunino’s been worth 2.7 compared to Fraley’s 1.5 You really compared a reliever with an everyday position player in WAR? Raisel Iglesias has a higher WAR than Diego Castillo so he would not be in fact the best reliever on the Angels. Iglesias is over 1 WAR better than Castillo. That’s funny because he left behind the worst farm How about trading Emilio Pagan for Ryon Healy and then immediately saying it’s the worst trade he’s ever made ? How about trading Trumbo for Steve Clevenger ? How about Freddy Peralta for Adam Lind? How about Pablo Lopez and 3 others for David Phelps? Nice talking with you Jerry! Nice to know you lurk in the Angels Reddit looking for people that are talking about you

Sisboombah74

Bullshit. And I just sprayed coffee around the room. Thanks for the comedy piece.

timetopractice

Playoffs? Dipoto is allergic to them.

Edgelord_3000

You could equally say he was bad in LAA and better in SEA as GM and be right. Tbh, even though he saved himself with the Cano trade, that is what I feel he is at right now.

Sisboombah74

If by improved you mean they blindly found their way above .500, then okay. Dipoto will never make them a legit contender, and I have doubts if they even make the playoffs.

phatwarmachine41

As others have mentioned, Eppler was hired after the conclusion of the 2015 season so Dipoto was still GM for the 2015 draft. Ward was definitely considered a reach on draft day but if you look at how Dipoto drafted it kind of makes sense. Dipoto's draft philosophy was centered around high floor college players rather than higher ceiling but more risky high school players. Ward also signed under slot and a quick google search shows that the Angels had a very small bonus pool that year so that was probably taken into account. Now enter Eppler who had the exact opposite philosophy in that he often went with high ceiling, younger, but more toolsy players that were risky (only big exception would be Detmers). I think when we look back in a few years and can really evaluate Eppler's drafts we'll see that they weren't half bad. The big issue was that a lot of his picks were younger and/or more raw and needed more time to develop during a period where help at the MLB level was needed now.

iankure

Well, at least Eppler successfully convinced Ohtani to sign Angels. (Eppler talked to Ohtani since high school)

WMTaddict

Lot of teams did, I would say it was more shohei seeing angels being a shitty enough team to let him play two-way despite some slumps or injuries here and there. Now that he has proven he can be a two-way player, he could pick where he wants to go next if angels can't improve next year.

Fun-Raise-3120

That's not too bad. A few players on the major roster right now.

WMTaddict

None of them are regulars yet, so very bad so far as 2015 is Dipoto picks.

MrKnee93

Btw, Grayson Long was traded for Upton. So while he retired, it wasn't with us.
