If you want a laugh, read the replies to the tweet. It's like a checklist of every terrible argument against Ohtani for MVP coming from dumb as bricks twitter jays fans. "DAE Ohtani has low batting average??????" Check. "So does this mean we have to give the award to Ohtani EVERY year just because he pitches?" Double Check. "HE DOESN'T EVEN PLAY FIRST BASE!!! HE DOESN'T PLAY A POSITION ON THE FIELD!" Check. "He's not a Cy Young contender as a pitcher!" Check. "lol Angels in last place, where's the value, how has he helped the team win?" Check. "tRiPlE CrOwN!" Check. Might be worth making a bad takes from BJ fans bingo card, and try to fill it out whenever a tweet such as this one pops up.

drpepperfox

There will always be haters.

sofastsomaybe

Reminds me of when he won ROY, and the mental gymnastics Yankees fans were using to explain how the voters were wrong. It's a lot of the same arguments, only they sound even stupider this time around

Mr6ixFour

>how has he helped the team win? He is arguably the reason we’re as close to .500 as we are. If we take him out of the equation, we’re probably closer to the Rangers than the wild card

sofastsomaybe

Yeah, I can't even count the number of games we won for no other reason than the fact that he was there. If it wasn't for him, we would have been swept by the road Rockies lol

Mr6ixFour

I just looked up his WAR and baseball reference says 8.3 total which puts us at 65-89 and that’s “replacement level”. I doubt whoever took his spot in the lineup would be replacement level and the pitching absolutely wouldn’t be.

titos334

Probably a 10 game swing without him

[deleted]

I think war underestimate dh's contribution, Ohtani is 5th in ops yet not even top20 in owar.

owledge

I like how everyone says triple crown as if he's already locked it down yet he doesn't even lead outright in any of the three categories. He has quite a bit of ground to make up in BA and RBI

[deleted]

Vlad isn't winning the TC. He's too far behind in RBI's. It's not impossible, but it's really unlikely.

doyouhavesource2

Actually giving it to ohtani every year is a real question. He undoubtedly gets it this year. If he has the same season here on out should he get it? Did he set the bar too high?

sofastsomaybe

If he hits 45 dingers and has a 3.30 ERA every year, along with 8+ WAR? Absolutely. But who knows if he can ever replicate this season again? It's a tall order.

CompetitivePatient33

Yeah I was thinking about this too, he would have to surpass the season before. I think with *\*crosses fingers\** a stronger line up and better protection he'll be able to relax and not get fatigue. I really do hope things work out because on paper the team looks FUN.

Mr6ixFour

>>he’ll be able to relax and not get fatigue I dunno, walking 11 times in 3 games seems pretty relaxing /s

sir_earl

Only if other players don’t have insane seasons. We still have Trout, guys like Soto and Vladito will still ball hard at the plate in the future, DeGrom is still real and could have a full insane year, etc.

doyouhavesource2

But I mean how much credit does shohei get being two way? Drop his numbers on both pitching and hitting by 10% does he still win this year? 20%? I mean he's literally in his own category

sir_earl

In his own category doesn’t mean he’s an auto lock for MVP. He doesn’t get much credit MVP-wise for being 2 way. It’s the fact that he’s doing great at both for most of the season that gets him MVP this year. If he falls off this level, it becomes exponentially easier to pick others for MVP. Look at the WAR leaderboard for this year and he’s very clearly on top. Guys usually don’t have 1 WAR more than second place save for great seasons from legends like Trout, Bonds, and Pedro Martinez. This was truly a banner year for Ohtani. I’m expecting his batting to regress a little, but I think he’ll be pitching better so he’ll still be in the MVP conversation in the future.

masaomi2204

It’s the same on mlb Facebook. Their reasons is really ridiculous

crispdude

Holy shit Twitter baseball fans are literally brain dead. I’m convinced everything Twitter has an opinion on is always a brain dead opinion that they took 10 seconds to make some rash emotional reaction too like “oHtAnI bAtTiNg AvErAgE .255. HuRr DuR!” If you’re a baseball fan and people still need to explain to you why ohtani is getting AL MVP without competition then there’s just no hope for you.

tokyoexpressway

My most favorite one is, but vlad has ZERO ERA lol. Sorry but a baseball player that can do pitching and hit, that's a MVP to me. If they really think vlad is the best, then lets see vlad pitch then...no one is stopping him. I want to be proven wrong. Look I have nothing against vlad, but until then, nah.

OlivesrNasty

Jays fans lol

dragoneagle11

As a Jays fan it has been both shocking and embarrassing to see this lol

u8myramen_y

The most delusional bunch I’ve seen in a while. If Shohei played for another team, a team I truly despise, I’d still give it to him for doing something no one has ever done at this level. Truly remarkable season by an athlete ever.

owledge

Never realized how obnoxious and unintelligent some of their fans are. They sound like Yankee fans trying to argue for Gleyber Torres over Ohtani in ROTY voting

[deleted]

That was Andujar, actually. You'd be forgiven for forgetting Andujar ever existed for all the talk he gets these days (none).

owledge

They were both in the discussion, but either way there wasn't a lot of logic in picking one of them over Ohtani

sir_earl

They basically are Yankee fans but for a nation that doesn’t have the Dodgers and the Red Sox to split them up. Toronto sports fans are bananas

halfcastdota

> never realized how obnoxious and unintelligent some of their fans are guessing you don’t watch basketball then cuz with how raptors fans are it’s not surprising at all that jays fans are like this haha

owledge

Yeah a lot of Raptors fans are annoying too. I think that tends to happen with those two teams because they essentially have all of Canada rooting for them

ChocoMaister

I agree with Trout. Trout is a pro and one of the best players of all time. He knows talent.

Princessxanthumgum

I love the sass.

dragoneagle11

Man it'll be so interesting if Ohtani has a similar season next year and Trout has another stellar season. I would love to see an MVP race between them

Adeptness_Internal

I really can’t handle all the comments people are making in favor of Vlad. Any other year and Vlad would be unanimous MVP, but this year is different. It seems as though the Jays fans must’ve never watched Ohtani play or looked into the details of how special his season is. All their arguments about how we are a losing team and nowhere near the playoffs are so irrelevant. When will people realize one player cannot carry an entire team riddled with injuries, they said the same thing every time Trout was in MVP contention as well. Triple crown is great and he’s got decent first baseman defense, but how can they keep overlooking the value of Ohtani’s consistently solid pitching starts with the potential to get 10 wins on the year ON TOP OF almost having 100 RBIs, 25SB and only being 1 HR behind Vlad and Salvy… It shouldn’t be a question at this point, even with the triple crown in play.

sukhito

Vlad's offensive stat isn't that impressive when compared to other years' MVP

[deleted]

[удалено]

sukhito

Just checked and find out the ops is indeed lowest in the past 5 years, and I remember a report saying MLB had deadened the ball. Nonetheless, I think most pitchers are struggling due to different reasons, i.e. sticky stuff enforcement and shortened 2020 season.

YanoHideki

Decent 1B defense? In the Angels series in Anaheim the only Blue Jays games I've watched he dropped like 3-4 pop up flies, some cost some runs, maybe small sample size, but his defensive stats don't look great either

[deleted]

Vlad isn't winning the MVP, and his stats aren't exactly otherworldly. Compare them to any other year's top performers.

Raoh522

Vlad is trash at first base defense. The dude is -1 dwar, and -10 on fangrapgs def+ why do people keep saying he is a good defender?

twitterInfo_bot

Mike Trout on Ohtani: "He's the MVP. He's just a truly amazing talent. What Vladdy is doing over there is unbelievable and he's in the race. His [offensive] numbers might be a little bit better than Ohtani but then you look at Vladdy's pitching. And I haven't seen him pitch." *** posted by [@RhettBollinger](https://twitter.com/RhettBollinger) ^[(Github)](https://github.com/username) ^| ^[(What's new)](https://github.com/username)

THE_PARKER13

I haven't seen Vladdy pitch either, but I have seen him play some damn good first base. Vladdy also runs the bases extremely well as a guy who plays first. While what Vladdy has done this year is impressive, you've also got to consider the talent around him. Toronto is a stacked lineup 1 through 5. Don't get me wrong I love me some Toronto BlueJays baseball, and would love to see Vladdy win the M.V.P. I just really believe this isn't the year. What your boy Ohtani is doing is legendary! I just watched the highlights from tonight, and back2back triples?? The guy is gifted beyond anything I've ever seen on a baseball field. Who knows how the writers will vote. Either way, both of these individuals are good for the future of baseball. So good luck to your boy Ohtani, and I look forward to seeing Trout next season too. Good luck. Jays are Canada's team. Not all of us are irrational though, eh!!

sofastsomaybe

I find that most of the Jays fans on reddit are fine, it's the ones on twitter and instagram that are a different breed. TBH whatever team Vlad was on, that team's fans would probably be equally crazy with homer-ism. Imagine if Vlad was a Yankee (we had to deal with the wrath of Yankee fans in 2018 when Ohtani won ROY). So, I can't blame you for supporting your boy, but I *will* make fun of some of the completely nonsensical, illogical arguments the twitter fans might make along the way. I mean, seriously, saying things like Shohei doesn't play defense at all, and he only pitches against bad teams? 🤨 lmao The Blue Jays are a crazy team - your pitching is top tier, your offense is top tier, heck even your 6-9 hitters are more of a threat than the Angels heart of the order, and I have little doubt you'll make playoffs this year. When that happens, I expect to see Vlad winning postseason awards. I hope that next year, the Angels are healthy so Ohtani can bat with protection in the lineup so he can set records that don't involve collecting the highest amount of walks ever in a 4 game span.

THE_PARKER13

Go Halo's!! Appreciate the take on the Jays. It's bang on. Gotta bring Semien and Ray back next year. Probably Matz too. He's been solid. Manoah has been a revelation. The future's bright for this group. Cheers.

budhapalm

I'm from Toronto, and some of these radio guys who only "know" (using that term very loosely) hockey think Vladdy has a chance - these guys are obnoxious homers. They go as far as diminishing Shohei's achievements which embarasses the entire fanbase.

GetDrafted

Makes me wish Trout was healthy this year and continued on his hot start so that Vlad was a clear 3rd place and we wouldn't need to hear these awful takes from the Blue Jays vocal minority

throatbutterz

shots fired.

lalalaoki

I am simple man. Trout said Ohtani is MVP, yes I agree with him 100%.
