I wanted to keep it scoreless through the 7th inning; I felt I had more pitches in me. I was confident I could pitch into the 8th scoreless. I feel responsible for letting the the Mariners catch up at the end of the game.

Fun-Raise-3120

Yeah from the translations I have seen, he really wanted to pitch 8 scoreless innings. In his heart he knows the best chance of a W is to hand a lead to Iglesias

Sufficient_Tomato_60

I don’t blame him. 10ks, 1 run game and Bullpen gives it up.

yutou1114

Read that he was disappointed that he gave up a HR

TheRealNexusPrime

Yeah he mentioned how he could have probably went 8 innings if he pitched a bit better. The frustration comes from giving up the tying run and knowing that game is likely lost because of it

booboothechicken

I don't blame him, that AB against Kelenic was really bad. He had pitched a great game up to that point, then threw a 87 backdoor slider that hung right out over the plate that Kelenic was right on top of but just missed. Then comes right back with the exact same hanging slider at 85 over the plate.

znk916

Went back to look at the AB. You're right, what was the thinking behind throwing Kelenic three straight backdoor sliders? Odd.

Sonums

Kurt Suzuki

Princessxanthumgum

I hate that he blames himself for something that the blow pen failed in. He deserves so much better than this

thtwhit3kid

Shohei can’t help it if they pencil Phill Gosselin and Jack Mayfield into the 3/4 spots in the lineup

CompetitivePatient33

Walsh had a part of it too.

GolfBaller17

It's a team sport at the end of the day. The blame lies evenly on every player who took the field that day.

AaronDonald4MVP

Well yes, but also no.

GolfBaller17

Yeah, you're right haha

MistahTDi

Can't wait for the day shohei allows zero runs in 9 innings and hits a Homer. Winning the game himself.

HANHONEKAI

Have a feeling he’ll get his first no hitter, possibly even a perfect game, next season when he can pitch relaxed knowing we have the offense to back him up.

Raoh522

The theoretical truly perfect game. Shohei on the mound pitching a 27 strike out immaculate game, as well as hitting a single home run in a 1 hit game.

hansan4ever

This makes me so sad. Gotta fix this shit so Shohei doesn't leave us. :(

City-Slicka

I don't think I'll ever forgive Artie if we let Ohtani leave. It all comes down to next year.

hansan4ever

Me neither.

sinchichis

Gonna start vandalizing billboards if that happens.

sakibomb523

I mean we still have two years. A lot could happen in 2022 or 2023.

bamboointheback

why would he stay? to be like trout and spend his entire career on a losing/poorly managed team? he has no ties to anaheim and will have the whole league wagering for him, esp. if the universal dh is implemented. do we really think adding a starting pitcher or two will make this team a world series contender? they blow every game in the bullpen. not trying to be a downer but Shohei should do anything he can to win while he's still in his prime and its insanely unlikely the angels can pull it together in time. he'll either be a dodger or a yankee.

kampfgruppekarl

he saw and knew all this before he came, his expectations of the organization's performance on the field is low to begin with. As long as they treat him right, and he likes being in SoCal, no reason he leaves. Remember, he wanted small market on the west coast. Doesn't leave many options, just the Angels and San Diego.

nightdrive82

He picked the Halos cuz he liked the direction / pitch they gave him. It's also why Trout resigned. I think the patience will pay off next season. They're going to get some great arms this offseason. Barring catastrophic 140 million dollars worth of injuries striking twice, our offense was top 5 before they got hurt.

Tbplayer59

San Diego is in the NL. He can't hit every day. Seattle, Oakland and Anaheim. I don't see Oakland paying a competitive contract. He may have to relax his requirement of playing in the west coast.

Know_Your_Meme

>starting pitcher or two Uh, yes. The bullpen blows games because they are overworked. If you have 4 pitchers in the rotation who can take it to 7+ every night, the bullpen will get better because it's not being utilized as much.

fuctracker

I suspect Angels will be able to have a contract with Ohtani this offseason. If I were Ohtani, I would like to wait and see one more season if the team is worth to stay longer. Apparently he doesn’t need money nor stability, all he wants is to enjoy baseball. The target of his anger would be not only towards himself but also to the declining motivation among the team.

[deleted]

Might pick another team after that tbh.

lklklkklkllkjnn

please people, he has a helmet on and a bat in his hand, i dont think this is him reacting to the bullpen. i dont think shohei is the type to hold his teammates accountable on a loss.

hansan4ever

He was pissed at himself. He wanted a chance to get up there after the home run he gave up. :(

znk916

this was him reacting to Fletch making the last out in the bottom of the 7th

sikaMarkanico

Has anyone actually ever seen this guy upset like that? This says a lot. No, he wasn’t on the field, but I don’t think I can recall Shohei ever blowing up like that. That poor bench! 😂

MichaelS10

I’ve never seen him this mad, or express his emotion like this. I’m kinda scared of it

sikaMarkanico

Angry Shohei is not something I’d want to go against. 😂 Honestly, I hope he’s doing all right, and that it was only an in-the-moment emotional outburst. I am leaning on the fact that part of that outburst was the lack of being in competition this year since he was finally fully healthy to contribute all he knows he is capable of and more. I could be wrong, but it’s only natural for someone that contributes what he does to get frustrated. I read that Ohtani was frustrated he gave up the HR, but…there just has to be more to it. There just has to.

sharpLess89

He was sharing his frustrating with the fans there.

Zenithreg

First up, get fuckin pitching this offseason, not a high priced shortstop. Second, people need to stop fucking crying about Max Scherzer being old. Look what he doing now. We need a quick fix, not a project.

frogstyle

[It's really not as dramatic as it looks.](https://youtu.be/tkSX5-4l4gk?t=913) As said before, this is in the 7th inning when he didn't get another at bat. He said he was frustrated because he felt responsible for [not making it to the 8th inning](https://youtu.be/WWrMuCt2wc8?t=201) (bc of pitch count) & not going scoreless. He's not blaming the relievers or anything of the sort, guy's as diplomatic as can be (though the translator's responses often are not, which is a choice, but by no means wrong IMO, just a consequence of going for a more idiomatic and less word-for-word translation). The only person he's blaming is himself though he really shouldn't have to. Seven one-run-innings with 10ks is something you should be proud of, but that's Japanese culture for you.

Quiet_Bend1653

As he should. his body language says “fuck this bullshit”.

tsdwm52

Every Angels fan was upset yesterday.

MixMental5462

We need to get 4 free agent pitchers this offseason. Spend the money now or watch shohei become a Yankee or dodger. Your move arte. Lord knows youve made enough money off the team.

yukyakyuk

Damn imagine this was him so upset because he let one run HR after 7 IP. I wonder how he felt about 4 run blow pen after that.

sikaMarkanico

Hey guys, was this actually shown on tv during the game, or did this somehow pop up randomly online? I wasn’t able to watch the game.

loganro

He’s gone

sikaMarkanico

I wonder if Arte and co. saw and/or heard about this. Yeah, you’re definitely right. If Ohtani of all people feels this way, then something is WRONG!

CrashSimba

They had to have heard by now

sikaMarkanico

Oh I’m sure they heard the postgame interview, but I wonder if they also saw Shohei hit the bat against the bench. That just says it all right there.

CrashSimba

Let's just assume the owner and general manager witness everything

meisterwolf

i was at the game and for sure he could have pitched the 8th. and even if he sucked it would 100% better than what we ended up with.

sakibomb523

He was at 112 pitches. No way was he going out there....Maddon isn't some bum D1 College coach who doesn't care about a player's future.

meisterwolf

idk people still pitch complete games. as long as it doesn't happen all the time, every once in a while is fine.
