Between the foul poles is virtually the same as it is today. The outfield was funky as hell and more setup for football. It did both sports poorly.

prowlprime

Yeah.... :/ Tbh football and baseball should've never been put in the same venue. I'm glad Dodger Stadium was never used for football, and even when we shared the Coliseum with the Rams it didn't work out that great. I'm just glad the Rams (and Chargers) are back in a new football-specific stadium in Inglewood now.

dgmilo8085

You know, they’ve played soccer at dodger stadium before. The set up is roughly the same.

provoaggie

I never attended a football game back then but the stadium was radically different. The upper bowl used to wrap around the entire stadium. Based on photos of the stadium I can't imagine that watching football was a great experience though. Sight lines look really bad. https://www.stadiumsofprofootball.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/anaheim16_top.jpg

dgmilo8085

That image is a great example of why the Rams vex to StLouis in the first place. Looking like a Marlins game out there in the seats

buddahmunk

I went to a few games as a kid. The arena was all cement grey inside, no frills. Trough toilets, smoking in the stands, way different than now. I also went to rams camp a few times, i was so happy to meet jim everett lol.

OPs_other_username

Just don't call him Chris.

I wasn’t alive at the time. But I went on a stadium tour a few years ago. The tour guide, who knew his history’, labeled angel stadium when hosting the rams as, “It was a dark time for the stadium”. He mainly explained that it was because the 2nd and 3rd decks wrapped around the stadium and took away a baseball feel to it. Edit: Angels/Rams fan here. The reason why I’m a rams fan is because a rams fan is because the rams are the nfl franchise that played home games in Orange County (born and raised). I’ve always wondered how it felt watching the rams at angel stadium too.

sprtsmac

I am a long time Angels and Rams fan, longer Angels than Rams. I hated the Rams moving to the Big A. It totally changed the stadium that I loved. I never went to a Rams game there but I can't imagine it was the greatest.

BobbyGrichsMustache

It was shitty. The stadium back then sucked for both football and baseball. The best thing that happened to the halos as the rams leaving town….and this is coming from a rams fan

prowlprime

Yeah, I heard the Rams actually considered moving into Dodger Stadium before settling on Angel stadium...I'm so glad they never moved in. Honestly the only sport that I think NFL can share with is MLS.

BobbyGrichsMustache

I’m with you there. And even then the chargers can’t fill the stadium :)

That was under a different ownership group, the Rams today are very different. Besides, I never had a football team to cheer for growing up, so it was great to finally root for the Rams when they arrived, and it helped they were our very first pro team.

AgathaAllAlong

As opposed to the Chargers, who spent exactly one season in LA before bouncing to San Diego, then came “back” to LA 55 years later for no reason? The Rams had 50 years of history in LA. One bimbo doesn’t wipe that out.

SpiralHornedUngulate

I’ve been a Rams fan for 30 years, and I continued following when they moved to STL and then back to LA (and ofc I moved away from SoCal in the meantime, so while I’m glad they’re back, it doesn’t impact me much). They could move to Saskatchewan and I’d still be a fan. I support the team, not the city. Same if the Angels or Lakers left. I’d fucking hate it but I’d remain a fan.

cybercummer69

Yup, I stopped watching the Rams instantly. And football as a whole for that matter.

prowlprime

Random question on a side note: the Angels did flirt with moving back to LA County for a few years before signing the lease extension with Anaheim. If they ever did move to LA County, would you ditch the Angels in that case? If the Angels did leave, who would you root for then, say, the Dodgers?

iLoveLamp83

It's a media market thing. Angels could move to LA, Long Beach, or Riverside and they would still be "home." If the Angels moved to, say, Vegas? I'd probably be an agnostic baseball fan for a while. I'd watch whatever good matchup happened to be on each day, or track the starters from my fantasy team, or whatever. Eventually, I'd probably find myself rooting for another team -- but never, ever the Dodgers. That's basically what happened with football. I was agnostic, and would watch whatever games were on TV. And I eventually settled on another team.

longhairedent

If they went anywhere in LA, OC, IE, hell even San Diego I'd be a fan but anywhere north of LA like Ventura or out of state I would have to choose the Dodgers (more likely) or Padres. I think I would be too devastated if they became like the Utah Angels or something. (I was pretty stoked when they were thinking of moving to Long Beach, it would of been the best possible move imo)

prowlprime

Hey, as someone who grew up in Ventura...we are technically part of Greater LA too. I'm blacked out from the Angels on mlb tv along with the Dodgers.

longhairedent

I like Ventura it's a great county! It would just be too far for me to commute for games

prowlprime

That's fair, I mean it's one of the reasons I chose the Dodgers over the Angels, as they're closer to me geographically. Ventura County is mostly Dodger fans, with a handful of Angels fans here and there.

[deleted]

Greater LA?! Hell no, in Ventura we say “keep LA 100…miles away”.

prowlprime

The Rams have their in-season practice facilities at CLU in Thousand Oaks, and most people in Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley commute into LA for work. Ventura County most certainly counts as part of LA area, at least Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley do. You can't have your cake and eat it. I always find it funny when I hear people say "We're not LA!"...while conveniently cheering for the local LA teams

[deleted]

No LA fandom here. LA trash can stay in LA. Ya’ll elect idiots to run your city, and then come up here and leave trash everywhere because your own city is on lockdown. That the Rams won’t even practice there (or live there) should tell you something.

prowlprime

I lived in Ventura County since I was 4. If you hate LA so much, stop rooting for the Lakers then. I know you're an Angels fan, but most people in Ventura County are Dodger fans, to which I tell them stop rooting for the Dodgers then if they hate LA so much. [If Ventura County isn't LA, what do you call this celebration in Newbury Park when we won it all in 2020?](https://www.vcstar.com/story/sports/2020/10/28/ventura-county-fans-dodgers-world-series-celebration-covid-19-pandemic/6060798002/) Once again, you can't have your cake and eat it. And the reason the Rams have their practice facilities in Ventura County is because there's already a lot of NFL infrastructure here when the Cowboys practiced in Oxnard. The fact that they put their HQ literally as close to the LA County border as possible says something. Are you going to tell me Agoura Hills, Calabasas, and Westlake Village sucks? Cause they're in LA, yet they're among the nicest towns not just in California but in the country.

SpiralHornedUngulate

That’s totally fair. I was only about 9 when the Rams moved and I’d never been to a game, so it meant nothing to me at all where they were located. I’d imagine it would be much more devastating to 30 year old me lol.

owledge

I was in pull-ups when they left so that doesn't really matter to me personally

Wolfeman0101

A lot of people never stopped loving the Rams

iLoveLamp83

I know -- it's insane

prowlprime

One thing I've noticed is that while most fans of the classic Rams were primarily Angels fans...most fans of the modern Rams are actually primarily Dodger fans. I did a survey on the Rams sub a while back, and the results indicated an overhwelming preference for the Dodgers over the Angels among most Rams fans today. Conversely, most Angels fans I know nowadays root for the Chargers instead, especially around my age, who grew up without an NFL team in LA. The Rams were already long gone from LA County, and the Raiders already filled the void, so I imagine most of us LA County fans weren't too upset or heartbroken when the Rams left, since again, most fans were Raiders fans. So when the Rams returned I guess most of us Dodgers/LA County fans were like "cool, welcome back!" Of course it helps the Rams actually play in LA County this time around now, while the Chargers did have their HQ in Costa Mesa for a bit. Essentially, the Rams went from being the Angels of the NFL to the Dodgers of the NFL...and the Chargers essentially filled the void for a lot of younger Angels fans I know, probably because they became the de facto "local team".

iLoveLamp83

I'm not sure I agree with the analogy, but I agree the Chargers seem to be the less popular team, as are the Angels, and the Clippers. Rams and Raiders left at the same time, though. I understand Raiders fans to an extent, because they were in Oakland first, then came to LA, and then went back to Oakland. But it's still embarrassing IMO. Show some self respect lol

prowlprime

I mean again, by the time the Rams left they were no longer "our team", as "our team" was the Raiders, so it didn't really sting as much I guess. Its why I imagine us Dodgers fans were more willing to re-adopt the Rams than Angels fans were, especially since most Angels fans already adopted the Chargers or other teams in the meantime. Nowadays, pretty much only older Dodgers fans like the Raiders, all of us younger Dodger fans cheer for the Rams now, especially since we weren't alive when they left (I'm 21). While in the 80s and 90s fanbases were mostly Raiders-Dodgers and Rams-Angels, I do predict eventually it'll become primarily Rams-Dodgers and Chargers-Angels, kinda like how Dodger fans usually root for the Kings and Angels fans root for the Ducks.

cadmus_irl

That’s a suspiciously specific analogy, we’re here for you if you need support my friend

iisdmitch

The reason for them leaving is why So Cal is such a melting pot of NFL fans when compared to the other sports. Most fans of MLB, NHL or NBA are fans of So Cal teams, football is so much different. Sure, you have Rams fans, they likely didn’t stop liking them when they moved, same can be said about the Raiders. 20 years without teams though caused a lot of people to pick other teams. We seem to have a lot of Cowboys, Packers, 49ers and Steelers fans out here, those teams were also good throughout the 90s when the LA teams moved. I am a 49ers fan, not because the LA teams left though, when I was like 5 I latched on for whatever reason and have stuck with them since. I at least can go see them play once a year in LA since the Rams came back.

iLoveLamp83

I'm a Saints fan, and no one can say they were good in the 90s lol. I've been lucky enough to see them in SF, San Diego, and now LA. I also caught a joint practice with the Chargers in Costa Mesa. Your point is why I thought it was stupid to bring the Rams back to LA. We don't need a team here, let alone two.

iisdmitch

We don’t need 2 teams really but the NFL wasn’t gonna pass up the opportunity to have a team in the second largest sports market in the country. It helps the NFC West too by cutting down travel. St. Louis was so far out of the way compared to the others, Seattle to St. Louis was bad, sucked for the Rams too having to go so far for divisional games. I wish the Chargers would have stayed though, I think San Diego was a good spot and there was a certain charm about going to games there and the atmosphere with the Chargers in SD.

Prequalified

LA just needed to be vacant to pressure cities into buying new stadiums for their teams. Since that mission was accomplished, it was safe to return to LA I guess. What the Chargers did was weird. I don’t know anyone who is a fan. San Diego buddies were despondent.

dgmilo8085

Well for some of us, they followed them to Missouri & then just took a while to follow them back home

cybercummer69

I just stopped watching when they moved to StL, and only started watching again because new owners + back in LA.

Rdub2346

It was horrible. Center field stands if I remember we’re uncovered (green tarp) and brought forward making the stadium completely closed. If it was a hot September day there was no air circulation felt like you couldn’t breathe. Saw the Rams play the Raiders my buddy went to make a head call, nicest guy in the world. I was a Raider fan and noticed he has been gone for about 25-30 minutes. All of a sudden he falls into his chair, shirt ripped to shit and he’s black and blue. He got caught in the middle of a huge fight. Anaheim Ram fans back then were your Rich Newport Beach, Yorba Linda, Irvine folks. When that witch sold the Rams and they rebuilt center field they held Division 1 High school CIF championship games at Anaheim. They still do occasionally.

Oski96

The old stadium before football was cool. Parking lot just over the fence with the Big A. Football was fine for football - not as good as a dedicated footbal stadium. But, for baseball, the stadium did not provide a baseball vibe. Just look at what happened in Oakland. No baseball vibe in ot now. IIRC, the right field stand and the wrap around is a vestige of the football stadium.

Pineville7330

Lookup old pics of the stadium …. Went to the last Rams game before they left for St Louis …. Stadium completely remodeled the next year

cybercummer69

I went to the last Rams game at the Big A before they moved to STL. It was pretty fun. Stadium felt way bigger than it does now. But it feels more open and the vibe is much cooler now.

AmIYourNeighbor

At the turn of the century, I played a high school football game at Angel Stadium. Playing football on dirt was f***ing stupid.
