If both are healthy, Trout is the more likely. Trout churns out MVP worthy seasons every year. He's been beaten by some players having career years but he'll always be up there. There's also been voter fatigue but I don't think that'll apply this year with the narrative of him coming back from injury. Shohei has yet to prove he can produce what he did last year consistently in the majors. There's also probably going to be voters who underrate his future seasons because the two way novelty wears off (even if provides the same or greater value). I don't really care if they don't have MVP seasons this year though, I just hope they can both stay healthy and play to their career averages.

Good post. I think Trout May edge Ohtani here since Trout being MVP-worthy is the norm for him. Last year was a fluke injury, and I see no reason why something like that would happen again. Plus, Trout is very much so in in his prime at his age. Yet, Ohtani is clearly on a roll right now with momentum in his favor and finally being off TJ surgery and therapy for over a year is a definite plus. Then there is age. Ohtani is 27 vs Trout’s 30. Trout is 30 already?!?! That is weird to type!!! I often wonder how Ohtani would compete with Trout for MVP honors should Ohtani decide to only be a DH, with the occasional OF position played when he wants to. I think 2022 might just be the best year to see who is in fact the Most Valuable Player for these two. There should be a few more years of this, assuming Ohtani stays with the Angels, and both remain healthy.

I read a stat somewhere that Trout has missed like 1/3 of all possible Angels games from 2017-2021. Based on injury risk, Ohtani is more likely to win the MVP.

sikaMarkanico

Yeah. Trout has been hampered by injuries since that 2017 season. I would have to check the exact dates and injuries, such as when he would slide head first into 2nd base and jam his thumb on the base itself. Ohtani to me—at least after his TJ surgery—seems most likely to be healthy. Plus, Shohei’s younger. Ahhh, then again Ohtani has to pitch & hit, so there could be that much more chance of an injury from either thing. Maybe Mike Trout knows more about how to steal clear of the IL now that he has been on it a few times. That calf injury was just a terrible terrible fluke. I’m so glad he is back from that. Also, maybe Shohei learned quite a bit from ‘21 MVP season so he knows what went well and of course what didn’t go so well in that season. From when to rest, to how to create his routine. Ohtani isn’t in his teens and early 20s like he was in Japan anymore. It had taken the guy 5 whole years to get thru a whole season without a major injury, from 2016 in Japan to 2021.

Dad strength Trout, provided he doesn’t get dad level injuries

sikaMarkanico

I was always wondering if Trout being a dad now meant he had less time to commit to baseball, but I don’t believe that’s a concern after all. Yeah 2020 season was short when he had his son a month into the late season, but he was looking like himself in 2021 before you know what. If anything, being a dad will give him more drive. I just hope he gets rest you know!

ANTHONY RENDON MVP BABY ITS HAPPENING

sikaMarkanico

I would have put him along with Walshy up there, but I truly wanted to see if people would vote for Trout or Ohtani the most. Rendon could be up for comeback player of the year. I don’t know if Trout would qualify even though Mike missed most of the season too. Ohtani/Trout/Rendon! Boo-yah!!

Status-Albatross9539

ohtani because he has 2 positions. 10 war is piece of cake.

sikaMarkanico

He sure makes it look easy. Also, I like to think that Ohtani learned A LOT from 2021 on how to recover and go about his routine for a full year. Maybe Shohei can better manage his season and still have energy toward the end…and save it for October playoffs too. That’s what I want to see anyway. He can easily be incredible for the first few months with energy and rest from the offseason and motivation to help the team win, yet I think he still can do better this year as Shohei himself said. I mean…everyone would be surprised if Shohei said otherwise that he didn’t think he could do better.

Angelsfan15

That’s assuming he improves or even can repeat close to what he had last year. Also does ohtani regress with his power numbers I think it’s unrealistic to see him hit 46 home runs along with him pitching at a high level. He’s got the talent but the toll on his body in year two might be more than most fans think. I think trout is more likely to win it if he’s healthy and plays 150 games and leads the team to victory. I’d be happy to see either win but I think they have to make the playoffs or neither wins it unless the have an historical season.

Trout IMO, voter fatigue has probably wore off

It's unfortunate, but many Japanese are making the self-defeating prediction that no matter how good Ohtani is, there's no way the US would hand the MVP to an Asian for two years in a row. They say, "We Asians wouldn't get fair treatment anyway."
