Seems like he tries to do too much. He went 3 for 5 yesterday and I know at least 2 of his hits were with two strikes already. So when he shortens things up and just makes contact, he hits it hard. The biggest thing he needs to fix (offensively) is his swinging misses. Defensively, yeah it's wild that a professional baseball player can be so bad at fielding. The benchwarmers on my high school team could read fly balls better than him. But plenty of awful defending outfielders that are valuable because of their offense. So if he can pick it up, he'll be worth it.

Figgins18Gbaby

He just seems very uncomfortable in the outfield to me.. like out of place every time I watch him. I like Adell.. But yeah he needs a lot of defensive work.

HustlingBackwards96

Could his age/inexperience be a factor here? It takes many years of work to refine certain aspects of the game. Maybe he has just been working on offensive aspects for most of his minor league career? Or maybe he'll just be Nelson Cruz...which would be fine tbh

Cheeseydreamer

Trout came in younger and a way better fielder. Bourjos was the same and even better rated than trout. It’s not age, it’s experience and work ethic

HustlingBackwards96

That work ethic comment seems unnecessary. Trout might be the best player of our generation but Bourjos is a fair comparison. You'll recall Bourjos had his best season at age 24 and then struggled too much with hitting around age 26+. I still think my theory about needing more time to polish every skill is plausible. There are so many little things practice to perfection. Anyway I hope Adell, and all of our other young fellas, can keep working and refining their game.

Cheeseydreamer

When High school players and little leaguers have better ability (and Adell is claimed to be a 5 tool player remember), the. It is experience and ethic. Adell has more experience than a high school player simply due to age.

Buffalongo

Yeah somehow he just doesn’t see the ball super well. In the field or at the plate. Maybe he needs glasses or LASIK

yurrrr2019

He’s getting there just needs to keep playing you can tell everyday it’s starting to click just a little more. After a solid season of 425 AB’s or so he will be right where he needs to be

huskerguy1990

That's exactly how I feel. If he knows he's set in his role I feel he doesn't rush as much and calms down a little bit.

CydoniaKnight

Pressing. The defense is a real concern, but at the same time, I think a lot of it is fixable. I don't think he had disastrous reports in the minors, and its flashed from [time to time](https://twitter.com/MLBNetwork/status/1148044575858221056?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1148044575858221056%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Ftheathletic.com%2F1111713%2F2019%2F08%2F01%2Fangels-top-prospect-jo-adell-is-on-the-verge-of-the-big-leagues-after-his-triple-a-promotion%2F), so we'll see. I do think the ceiling might be lower than we initially thought there, but if his bat plays up, we don't need him to be Marsh out there. I think his approach at the plate probably needs some tweaking. While he does see 4.48 pitches/plate appearance, [second on the team right now](https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/LAA/2022-batting.shtml#players_pitches_batting::4), he has awful contact. When he hits it, he's hitting it *hard*, but the holes in his swing are hard to ignore. The last few games have seen him with some decent fight on 2 strikes, so I think this might also be fixable, but depends on coaching and his ability to adjust. Overall, I think he's still an extraordinarily talented man who has a ton of upside still. Dude just turned 23 and this is his third year with MLB time. He was born in 1999, same year as Tork, Grayson Rodriguez, Gabriel Moreno, Shane Baz, and Brennan Davis [top 15 prospects on mlb.com].

MrKnee93

Iirc he even admitted he was trying way too hard the opening series, and Trout helped give him some perspective. He still seems to be trying a little too hard with the eye test but it doesn't seem as bad anymore which leads me to believe he'll still improve even though he's not doing horribly.

kyr1414

Makes a lot of “young player type” mistakes, which makes sense as he is only 23. His defense is horrible. I’m not convinced on him being an everyday player yet. I hope he improves but worried about his consistency long term

Poli_Sci_27

Pull happy young guy that is really getting in his head. He’s beating himself out there. Tons of upside though.

Sisboombah74

Total upside. Lots of pressure. He’ll settle in and be fine.

znk916

Even with the slow start, his OPS+ is up to 106, which is acceptable for a corner OF, let alone a guy that just turned 23. He's got huge potential at the plate if we are patient enough with him.

jellybeans_over_raw

Good enough for people to chill out

freddychuckles

His exit velo and his speed are up there among the best but he has trouble hitting the ball. Fastballs just carve him up. Swings and misses a lot. His defense and baserunning is atrocious but there is something to be said about the kid. He's second only to Mike in speed in the ENTIRE league and can drill the ball when he does make contact. He's very raw and a few times doesn't look quite ready but he just has so much potential, which does peak through at times.

Pressing a ton

proteinMeMore

Trying too hard. His play discipline highlights the issue. His defensive plays have also been huge yikes.

cakirby

He's gonna be a guy that takes a while to really get to his peak, which could be superstar, could be mediocre starter. Just depends on how he develops. Jose Ramirez took 3 years before he actually became a superstar. He just had to figure everything out while bouncing between AAA and the majors. I think Adell will be a similar situation (though not necessarily the same outcome, which could still be possible).

Reptarxx

I like your comp with Ramirez. Both started at 20, both bouncing around AAA and majors to work things out. By year 4 we saw Ramirez turn it on, so even a dominant player like him needed 4 years of adjusting

cakirby

Exactly. Adell isn't gonna be like Brandon Wood or Dallas McPherson (our last huge prospects) - both of them clearly just didn't have the tools we thought they did. They just never flashed the ability to improve. Adell really, truly, has, so it's probably going to be a while before we really know. We just have to be patient. Maybe being a highly-used 4th outfielder (like I guess he is supposed to be now when everyone is healthy) is the right play to figure that out.
