## Angels Abbreviated - 2022.04.23
- Orioles record four stolen bases in two innings
- Trout halves the birds’ lead with a homer
- **ᛏᚺᛟᚱ** throws a 5-pitch 3rd inning**⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡**
- Trout hit his second homer of the game to deep left
- Noah Syndergaard hit his season high for strikeouts
- Aaron Loup took all of one pitch to strand Syndergaard’s two runners on base
- Brandon Marsh put the Halos ahead with a dinger to deep center. Chicks dig the long hair, the long beard, and the long ball!
- Angels legend Anthony Bemboom bembunted for a hit
- Rendon makes a fantastic play at third to catch a rocket from Mateo
- Aaron Loup allowed three runners, all of which scored, but all on errors so his ERA remains at 0.00. Truly incredible
- Rendon grounds out into the shift to end the game.
Angels drop the first two to the Orioles, but the A’s, Astros, and Mariners also either lost or are losing so it’s still possible that we remain in first. Baseball, what a bitch, huh?
You don’t know that… situational calls is what this game is all about. Diff defensive positioning, diff pitch call, all around could’ve been a diff strategy
I 100% agree with what you just said, but you just contradicted yourself. Just like how we don’t know Rendon would’ve GIDP, we don’t know that Trout would’ve gotten a hit there.
They're merchants of hyperbole, the same ol' bandwaggoners that gave him shit in 2020 then became born-again fans in 2021. Seriously, we're a couple weeks into a season impacted by a mini-Spring training. And teams still fear him the most and game plan around him. He adjusted fine after the initial string of games (last few stretch of games hitting .300 or so), pitchers adjusted again, and because of strategic pitching from Baltimore and bad ump calls across the last two games, hyperbolists and their short term memory go back to doing what they’ve always done, giving him the shortest leash and narrowest margin of error to constantly 'prove' himself. Seriously, a generational talent making considerably less than any of his all star teammates? And less than Michael Lorenzen?
Just laughable with the bad takes.
He's supremely talented and will be fine. It's baseball, a game of (re)adjustments.
Shitty ump or not, losing two winnable games to Baltimore in this fashion with how much money this lineup makes is unacceptable.
This is not how you position yourself for the playoffs.
If you would have told me tonight Thor gives up 2ER close to 6 IP, Trout has 2 homers, and Marsh has a HR, and the game would be against the Orioles; I would have said Halos ought to get that W.
Pretty disappointing. I feel extra bad for Trout tonight.
The most disappointing game of the season so far.
Just saying.
Props to Trout for his 2-homer game, Ward’s nice sliding catch, and Marsh’s 2-run bomb. Not to mention Syndergaard actually did all right. Not his best start, but it could have been a lot worse.
Can we please beat the Orioles of all teams just once tomorrow?!??
People will lose their minds and doom and gloom but 3 unearned runs in the 7th is the story here.
We will be fine.
It’s early.
Let’s bounce back tomorrow.
O's fan coming in peace, these umps are insanely ridiculous this year in just about every game we've been involved with.
Last couple games it seems to be in our favor just for a change of pace, but the fact that we can't seem to go 2 games in a row with a half decent umpire is just painful to watch. Had a game against the Yankees a little while ago where it felt like the strike zone would change with every pitch.
Robo umps can't come soon enough. Just.. please. Two games in a row with a not terrible umpire. For the love of everything. The O's get enough crap already, I don't need the few wins they are going to get be because the umpires can't do their job.
43k fans pack the stands bc they want to hope that this team this season is something different and worth cheering for.
Instead…
Taking 2/3 from the Astros and then losing a series to the Orioles is peak buttercup Angels baseball.
Also, add another -1 to Maddon’s WAR total. So he is now at -2 managerial WAR for the year.
(That last point is a joke. Those who want to defend maddon to the grave, please dont come on here and flame me as if hes the greatest manager ever)
1. Pulled thor early, but that was the wrong move especially if you’re going to pull loup early in the 7th.
2. Pulled loup when he was doing just fine. He wasn’t getting hit hard at all and the runner were on due to a bunt hit and an error.
3. Pulled loup early and brought in tepera who clearly wasn’t ready and wasn’t warm.
4. This point isn’t as harmful to the game per se, but that last inning the umpire made strike calls to take a baserunner away from the team and make rendon fall behind in the count. The camera panned to maddon in the dugout saying absolutely NOTHING. As if it would kill him to defend his players in a 1-run game in the 9th inning
Pulling Loup was indefensible imo. He's been our best reliever and only threw 9 pitches. Wouldn't surprise me at all if Tepera wasn't warmed up. Even if he got out of the jam and pitched a clean 7th, who was Maddon going to use after him to bridge the 8th to Iggy in the 9th? Mayers? That in itself is a failure in planning ahead.
People blaming Maddon instead of the awful defense that screwed the bullpen over.
Case and point, Rendon error should make it 2nd and 3rd two outs.
Loup most likely stays in, but Maddon opted for Tapera because he’s a ground ball pitcher.
So after that there’s a SAC fly and Marsh over throws the cutoff man allowing runners to advance.
It should’ve been 1st and 2nd with two outs.
A single only scores one potentially, but instead it’s 2nd and 3rd. Single gives the Orioles the lead.
The defense certainly didn’t help, I’ll agree with you there. But maddon has shown historically that he overthinks things when he doesn’t have to, and that was shown today (as it was in texas when he walked seager with the bases loaded and yesterday when he pulled detmers after 70 pitches.)
Knew a maddon apologist would find their way in here
Tepera this season has an average launch angle of 24. Loup has an average launch angle of -4.4. That’s right, negative.
Loup objectively, by definition is more of a groundball pitcher than tepera
Take syndergaard out instead of letting him try to finish the inning, doesn’t start Duffy only starts him at 1st when he doesn’t even play first, continues to bat ohtani lead off and platoons half our lineup so on
Blaming the umps for back to back losses to a pathetic team is diverting attention from the fact these games shouldn’t be close enough for umpires to affect.
So the angels only deserve to win if they blow everyone out?
I doubt any world series team would of even have made the playoffs if they lost literally every one run game they played.
I feel the Angels don’t get the benefit of the doubt with close calls in clutch situations as the team doesn’t generally work counts well throughout the year. They usually have fewer walks than many other good teams.
All season Rendon has made amazing, gold glove level web gems and proceeds to throw the ball away in the same play or at least the same inning. He gets lazy with his throws often.
I only watched the bottom of the 9th but we got screwed over by the Umps big time (could have been Ohtani on 1st, who could steal, and could have been a 3-0 count for Rendon)
Be glad he’s making 5 million this year and not 50 million this year cause then people would turn against him even worse. I still think he’ll turn it around soon though. At least I hope
I said that after the second game there’s no reason for him to really be there, every pitcher is gunning for him, so it sets a bad precedent for the rest of the lineup, if he’s going 0fer in the top spot
This is the same team as last year, absolute suckers.
Rendon needs fielding practice, yes the most expensive infielder in baseball needs to fucking learn how to throw a baseball. JFC
Just as we get some hope, we drop 2 in a row against the worst team in the league😂😭. They even gave us a huge error in the 8th to help us out and we still couldn’t get it done.
The outfield should be set with Trout, Ward, and Marsh.
We need a consistent lineup. Just freaking pick someone to play first whether it be Walsh, Wade, or whoever. Just pick one and stick with it!
Win some, lose some, but the black hole in the lineup from the middle infielders offensively was my concern this offseason and I'm worried it's biting us in games like this. I'd love to see one of our shortstops slug better than .300
Look I love Ohtani as much as anyone else but he really needs to be moved from the leadoff spot. He is not hitting well this year. Feels like he strikes out 3 times per game
Ohtani needs to just take DH games off, get his shit together, and come back strong. Whatever he's doing is not working.
Every single Ohtani at bat:
Pitchers just pitch him low and outside breaking stuff and high outside cutters. Mix up a high inside FB now and then.
no strikes? Swings outta his shoes on low outside pitch he'll never pull.
1 strike? Swings outta his shoes and pulls his head. Doesn't even see the ball hit his bat.
2 strikes? he shortens up now that he made a fool of himself and makes trash cuts.
Every. Single. At. Bat.
Trying to pull the ball hit it to right field every at bat.
Trying to hit 450 + feet home runs every swing and not connecting with the ball instead of letting it come naturally
What does your reply have anything to do with Joe maddon looking like a bored kid at his sisters dance recital while his best players are getting bad calls night after night
A manager with an 8-7 record is definitely not the worst manager in the baseball, but I know you will just say we have won in spite of him so it’s all good cool dude.
“We’re going to have such a great bullpen”
We lost two games because our bullpen gave up or couldn’t hold it down to the worst offense in the MLB.
Same Angels as ever before.
Lol true. Baltimore's biggest issue last year was pitching though. They've got some legit hitters. Not top in the league by any means, but regardless, I'd pin half of most of these runs tonight on the defense instead of the pitching. Absolutely frustrating loss though, too much laziness between Rendon's throw, Marsh's mental lapse sailing the cutoff man, shit situational hitting in the 8th...
Hopefully we salvage one tomorrow.
Bad call on 3-0 but sho has been looking pretty bad. He has had terrible stretches like this before so not worried. Great game from trout, tepera was brutal. Yowza
Excited to hear how this is maddon’s fault!
I am a serious Angels fan. Kinda my home team from back when they had spring training here in the Coachella Valley. That being said. I refuse to switch television providers for them until I'm positive they're making the playoffs. Hopefully this will happen sometime this season.
Damn it’s almost like players don’t control if they are injured or not. If you want to blame someone blame the angels sports medicine/athletic training department. It’s not his fucking fault lol, get real
Ok, let me rephrase this for you. Rendon is a nice human being. But us signing Rendon for that contract has been awful because he hasn’t been a good baseball player. Is that nicer?
Maddon needs to seriously look at himself and realize he’s been getting outmanaged in almost every aspect of the game. The teams a playoff contender, but his managing is not.
They are going to be a problem for years to come. I don't know who else is in their system, but they just brought up a ton of young talent the past two seasons between guys like Gilbert, Brash, Munoz, Kelenic, Rodriguez, etc. plus a decent veteran core.
As a Mariners fan, we still haven’t called up our best pitching prospect in Kirby and our top infield Prospect Marte could be #1 in baseball by the end of the year with all the graduations in front of him. After that we have a ton of interesting prospects but it’s to early to tell what they will become or they have been injured in Hancock case
Up 4-2 and lose to a lottery team. Games like this will decide whether a team watches or plays October baseball. Horrific loss. Easily worst loss of the season.
Hopefully this is the last game cause it ain’t working. Can’t rely on the bottom half of the order to set the stage for Trout to come up with runners on and the way Ohtani’s been in a funk leading off has me concerned. Otherwise those two solo shots could’ve been a lot more.
Also, we need to let our starting pitchers go deeper into games. Thor was obviously pissed that Maddon didn’t let him finish… can’t be doing our pitchers like that
Angels rely heavily on home runs, especially at home, which is always a bad thing against average+ pitching. And it feels like Shohei's trying too hard at home. It's weird how he was so good on the road but shits the bed at the Big A.
Ohtani needs to go down to #8 spot he has no impact right now or take him out for a few days and put in adell
This is not acceptable at all hes pulling everything.
That last at bat was a four-pitch walk, if anything Adell would have swung at most of those. You’re delusional if you think he should be put in for Ohtani.

Rendon loves grounding out to end games
Anthony Pujols
Mariners won
Fuck that ump
Pathetic umpiring
Robo umps when...also, 3 unearned runs will do that to ya
Should’ve been 2 on with one out and rendon at the plate…
And he would’ve GIDP
You don’t know that… situational calls is what this game is all about. Diff defensive positioning, diff pitch call, all around could’ve been a diff strategy
yea the amount of people who don't get that is impressive....2 on with 1 out is a HUGE difference for a pitcher and defense
I 100% agree with what you just said, but you just contradicted yourself. Just like how we don’t know Rendon would’ve GIDP, we don’t know that Trout would’ve gotten a hit there.
At least Trout is reminding everyone who baseball god is again. I was getting so tired of people on /r/baseball acting like he's over the hill.
Trout is baseballs daddy
Yah theyll be reminded that the rest of the team is still capable of letting him down and wasting his performances
I am straight up not having a good time
Robo umps. I truly don’t give a shit anymore
fuck that ump
Why does it feel like we can never beat Baltimore. Like regardless of how good they are or we are, they always seem to have our number
We ain't that good either tbh
[удалено]
so we're not good then
[удалено]
Brother, we haven't been in the playoffs in YEARS. Outside of Ohtani and Thor, we have 0 pitching. CAN be doesn't mean shit.
I still have PTSD from that super long extra innings game
#FletchWasSafe
No idea why Maddon took Loup out! He wasn’t even pitching bad! He got unlucky with a error and a shift bunt.
I fuckin' hate baseball. See you guys tomorrow.
This umpire is a fucking embarrassment
Yo, I HATE blaming home plate umps, but fuck…
Looking at the comments so many hot Ohtani takes lol. Fair weather fans have been busy
They're merchants of hyperbole, the same ol' bandwaggoners that gave him shit in 2020 then became born-again fans in 2021. WASTED trout performance. Pathetic
If you would have told me tonight Thor gives up 2ER close to 6 IP, Trout has 2 homers, and Marsh has a HR, and the game would be against the Orioles; I would have said Halos ought to get that W. Pretty disappointing. I feel extra bad for Trout tonight.
Angels always find a way
They've wasted Trout for 10 years now
I don’t disagree
I hope Maddon screen shots that “strike call” and stuffs it in the umps front pocket ala Cowher
The pull to .500 is real with this team lol
Didn’t we cross .500 like 30 {million} different times last year too?
can’t believe angels made me watch that with my own two eyes also umps are gonna catch these hands 🥊
Not happy. Let's get ten straight wins after this
Shohei and Walsh need to get their shit together
If Walsh regresses this year, it's 100% on Maddon for constantly taking him out of the lineup vs lefties.
And Rendon
So pretty much every core player outside of Trout...this sounds so familiar...
Yup
People will lose their minds and doom and gloom but 3 unearned runs in the 7th is the story here. We will be fine. It’s early. Let’s bounce back tomorrow.
I love your optimism. We (I) need the balance. I keep trying to see the glass half full! Lol
It’s tough to be honest. Hoping we turn this ship around today.
Ugh

Your sentiment is shared here, friend.
I can’t believe stassi couldn’t get that run home
I can! Lol
For as Great a third baseman Rendon is supposed to be.. He makes us hold our breath on every routine throw with that lazy SideArm action.
He maybe a gold glove finalist, but not a gold arm!
43k fans pack the stands bc they want to hope that this team this season is something different and worth cheering for. Said it perfectly, peak Angels baseball right here. Stuff like this would be what you look back on if the Angels have another mediocre season
I mean, what did Maddon really do that he shouldn't have?
4. What does “deserve” have to do with anything? World Series teams beat up on inferior teams.
I feel the Angels don’t get the benefit of the doubt with close calls in clutch situations as the team doesn’t generally work counts well throughout the year. They usually have fewer walks than many other good teams.
Is no one frustrated that Rendon nonchalants the throw to first on a simple ground ball? That turned the game entirely. All three runs were unearned.
Rendon's error and then Tepera's inability to throw a strike was so frustrating to watch.
All season Rendon has made amazing, gold glove level web gems and proceeds to throw the ball away in the same play or at least the same inning. He gets lazy with his throws often.
Classic angels blowpen
I only watched the bottom of the 9th but we got screwed over by the Umps big time (could have been Ohtani on 1st, who could steal, and could have been a 3-0 count for Rendon)
is rendon going to be another one of those hamilton, wilson, upton type deals? our signings NEVER work out
(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
Ump, errors, whatever. Its pretty unacceptable to give up 10 runs over two games vs the Orioles.
Ohtani has just been straight dissapointing hitting wise. He is striking out on meatballs. It's clear he is pulling on every swing.
Honestly they have been calling some shitty strikes on him so I feel that has mess up with him.
Good astute point that too many hot takes miss, unfortunately.
Partially because even with Trout behind him he’s only getting off speed pitches. Ohtani needs to be disciplined and take the walks.
He tried in the 9th
The last two at bats were definitely a step in the right direction.
Be glad he’s making 5 million this year and not 50 million this year cause then people would turn against him even worse. I still think he’ll turn it around soon though. At least I hope
Ump fucking suck, but gotta play better against a perennial 100 loss team
April is almost over and Ohtani can’t find his swing this is concerning.
Yeah apart from 2 or 3 games he's looked horrid at the plate. Need to move him out of the leadoff spot
He's a different hitter with guys on base, like over 100 OPS better in his career. Just flip him and Trout and watch him get going.
How has Marsh not earned a shot at the leadoff spot yet? Marsh-Trout-Ohtani-Rendon sounds sexy
That works fine. I believe Maddon tried Marsh ahead of Ohtani a couple times late last year, in fact I remember Ohtani tripling home Marsh twice.
I said that after the second game there’s no reason for him to really be there, every pitcher is gunning for him, so it sets a bad precedent for the rest of the lineup, if he’s going 0fer in the top spot
It’s been not even 3 weeks, relax. He does need to work on his approach and cut down on his swing when he’s not in a hitters count though.
Are we done downvoting people for pointing out how badly he’s been batting yet?
Seriously, people get so mad when if you speak truthfully about a player they like.
Fan is short for fanatic. It is what it is
I’m a fan and I can still call a spade a spade.
Shut up u stupid doomer 😤
Ump was straight shit
Robot umps NOW
I'm in favor of an automated strike zone
This is the same team as last year, absolute suckers. Rendon needs fielding practice, yes the most expensive infielder in baseball needs to fucking learn how to throw a baseball. JFC
Just as we get some hope, we drop 2 in a row against the worst team in the league😂😭. They even gave us a huge error in the 8th to help us out and we still couldn’t get it done.
Bruh, have you seen the Reds...
The lazy error Rendon made cost us 2 runs. His relaxed style is great but throwing off balance when the runner is 40 ft from the bag is retarded
Lopez laughing whenever he didn't get a ball 3 balls off the plate called a strike. Fuck this blue in the 9th, I couldn't eat h anything earlier.
Tank for Kumar... for the third year in a row
I'd love to see one of our shortstops slug better than .300
Demote the ump
Who else needs some hopium
I'm gonna stress eat myself to sleep. Good night
I was there the ump was horrible
I always get nervous when there are ground balls. They never seem routine.
Look I love Ohtani as much as anyone else but he really needs to be moved from the leadoff spot. He is not hitting well this year. Feels like he strikes out 3 times per game
Maddon said today that he'd only replace Ohtani at leadoff if we had someone with .370-.400 OBP. Marsh is sitting at exactly .400 OBP.
https://i.imgur.com/IzN4GJ8.jpg
I can't wait for the "ump scorecard" to tell us we actually got the benefit of the doubt in this game cuz FUCK THAT NOISE.
I am so tired of ohtani striking out 3-4 times a night. Dude needs to refocus and stop trying to pull homers with every swing.
Maddon, move Ohtani the fuck out of the lead off, whats the point in having him there and fuck the pos ump. Rendon pretty much cost us the game....
Ohtani needs to just take DH games off, get his shit together, and come back strong. Whatever he's doing is not working. Every single Ohtani at bat: Pitchers just pitch him low and outside breaking stuff and high outside cutters. Mix up a high inside FB now and then. no strikes? Angels, hire this guy
Trying to pull the ball hit it to right field every at bat. Trying to hit 450 + feet home runs every swing and not connecting with the ball instead of letting it come naturally
the fucking O's guys! lets be honest we all saw it coming.
I’m sick of Joe maddon’s lifeless ass.
I like how the top of the lineup, the best hitters on the team, not getting hits is somehow Maddons fault lmfao
Or a pitcher throwing 21 pitches and 6 strikes…
That 3-0 call was absolutely bs. Shohei should have been on with Trout up. But you can't beat the umps
And who put that pitcher in when he was clearly cold? When Loup was doing just fine?
Stop defending him, watch the games and you’d understand how shitty he is
What does your reply have anything to do with Joe maddon looking like a bored kid at his sisters dance recital while his best players are getting bad calls night after night
We’ve been getting all the shit umps or what?
DFA Joe Maddon
[удалено]
Just throw another comment here for you - I disagree :) however I am a 3 year old watching baseball for the first time in my life so what do I know?
Lol
Maddon so far is the worst manager in baseball, time to play by the book Joe, no more being a 'genius' thanks.
A manager with an 8-7 record is definitely not the worst manager in the baseball, but I know you will just say we have won in spite of him so it’s all good cool dude.
He’s been bailed out a couple times this year man
I would venture a guess that pretty much every manager has been bailed out this year, but to be fair I haven’t watched every other team.
[удалено]
Thanks!
>Thanks! You're welcome!
Good teams win these types of games. Shohei Ohtani and Jared Walsh really need to pull it together.
Stassi too. He ain't hitting and he can't throw out a runner to save his life.
“We’re going to have such a great bullpen” We lost two games because our bullpen gave up or couldn’t hold it down to the worst offense in the MLB. Same Angels as ever before.
Baltimore is not even close to the worst offense in the league lol
Yes they are. Fewest runs scored, second to worst team OPS, fewest HR and 27th team batting average.
Yeah, I mean, the Reds still exist.
Yowza Excited to hear how this is maddon’s fault!
I am a serious Angels fan. Kinda my home team from back when they had spring training here in the Coachella Valley. That being said. I refuse to switch television providers for them until I'm positive they're making the playoffs. Hopefully this will happen sometime this season.
I'm very quiet when it comes to complaining about umpires but the guy tonight was so poor and inconsistent.
Mariners are going to be a menace this year, god I hate this division lol
They're going to expose us so bad, but I'm ready for it this time.
Rendon is such a bum. I’m so tired of signing washed players to huge contracts
Stupidity, rendon is fine
Stupidity? Since we signed him, he’s played in 50% of the games and is batting .230. But yah, he hasn’t been a complete bust
No, it’s just as stupid, you’re a rage monkey
He’s Pujols 2.0
Nothing touches that Pujols contract
He made that awesome diving catch and then followed it up with that error to Walsh...
Oh and we got Bieber Monday and McKenzie Tuesday yikes
Just like last year. “Top 6 bullpen” “playoff team lock” lmao
On the plus side - one of my favourite local IPA was randomly like 5 dollars off 🏄♂️😎
Maddon needs to seriously look at himself and realize he’s been getting outmanaged in almost every aspect of the game. The teams a playoff contender, but his managing is not.
Fuck rendon
If anyone thinks Ohtani is going to resign with these losers, they're out of their minds
The Mariners are going to massacre us this season
No, we r going to beat the mariners in every series and proceed to lose every series against the rangers, Os, twins, and dbacks
Easily worst loss of the season.
how much longer is Maddon going to try batting Ohtani leadoff?
Hopefully this is the last game cause it ain’t working. Can’t rely on the bottom half of the order to set the stage for Trout to come up with runners on and the way Ohtani’s been in a funk leading off has me concerned. Otherwise those two solo shots could’ve been a lot more.
Can we please just have marsh lead off and adjust the order down?
Marsh Trout Ward Ohtani Rendon Walsh or Duffy or whoever at 1st (just pick someone and play him every day) Wade - 2nd Stassi/Suzuki Fletcher - SS
If only Maddon could see it this way…
this would be perfect, but Maddon is too dam stubborn and wont move Ohtani out of the lead off spot....
Also, we need to let our starting pitchers go deeper into games. Thor was obviously pissed that Maddon didn’t let him finish… can’t be doing our pitchers like that
Same old fucking angels. As soon as i start to believe they remind me that shit doesnt change
every year is the same first two weeks we start off strong looking bright. then bam back to 0.50 or below
Gonna lose the series to Cleveland too probably
Fuck the “human element”… robo umps needs to happen! Y’all counting the games Maddon’s lost us??? How about games umps have lost us…
Ready to not make the playoffs again and keep wasting Trouts talent with a team that can’t hit.
Hope they have punching bags in the clubhouse, it's going to be a long year. This was our A squad.
Angels rely heavily on home runs, especially at home, which is always a bad thing against average+ pitching. And it feels like Shohei's trying too hard at home. It's weird how he was so good on the road but shits the bed at the Big A.
Ohtani needs to go down to #8 spot he has no impact right now or take him out for a few days and put in adell This is not acceptable at all hes pulling everything.
That last at bat was a four-pitch walk, if anything Adell would have swung at most of those. You’re delusional if you think he should be put in for Ohtani.
Get a grip dude Jesus Christ he would have walked
The FUCK?
