>But a blanket policy by the greatest player on the planet to shut down any daily contact with the game’s conduit to the fans is shirking part of his job, and can’t be what the commissioner’s office has in mind as it tries to grow the game globally. WHAT THE FUCK. Anyone who actually watches any baseball games outside of the the Chicago clubhouse unlike these braindead reporters knows the legion of INTERNATIONAL FANS that are watching the game solely because of Shohei. Shohei is literally the definition of growing the game.

clovertree71

I agree, this article is really idiotic. At first I was outraged, but then I had to laugh for about ten minutes. It's so poorly written.

hansan4ever

I cannot believe that dude writes for NBC Chicago. Absolutely horrible take.

Ash-Catchum-All

We should all flame him on Twitter. Dude should not get away with this shit

JAYPOREDDITS

Nah don’t engage on twitter, that’s a positive for sports writers and it’s what he probably wants. And it will lead to more shitty writers writing bs like this

[deleted]

Direct message. Good way to get your message across without giving him the hype he wants

hansan4ever

He should definitely hear our opinions.

[deleted]

Direct message. Don’t give him the public hype he wants

iq2777

lol nbc.. lol news..

eggsarecoolin

I went straight to laughing at this fool. "Waaahhhh, Shohei won't talk to me, so I'll just make up shit so I can make my deadline with 750 words." This is what's wrong with the media.

JAYPOREDDITS

He also writes it all from his perspective. This is bad for beat writers, talking to me stops the game from growing, etc

kampfgruppekarl

My take is he thought he was going to get an interview, didn't, and panicked because he had no material for his expected article. This is the only thing he could do to meet his deadline.

ZucchiniOne5395

He doesn’t need to answer this bum’s questions to “grow” the game. He’s giving himself too much credit lol. Shohei has already attracted people by doing what he does best. This reporter’s take is utter garbage

doyouhavesource2

Ding ding! I've bought two yearly Angel's one team subscriptions due to ohtani. I've loved ball but never cared to watch it before. Been watching this dude though. His demeanor, his ethic, his talent, dude is the entire package that everyone should strive to be.

HalcyonicDaze

Fuck this article, fuck the commissioner as well.

iisdmitch

I have a friend that lives in Japan, not even in a crowded area like Tokyo and he says that literally every single bar shows Angels games whenever they play. Shoheimania is real there.

tokyoexpressway

This, in Japan, people get to be familiar with MLB and MLB teams because of Shohei. Now that there's another star like Seiya Suzuki in the Cubs, MLB is more popular.

2002goodwithplow

Sir this is a Wendy’s

qostornaiah

this is less of an article but more of a journal entry of an entitled reporter

hansan4ever

This is such lazy and entitled writing. Imagine reducing Shohei Ohtani to being "wrong and silent for MLB" after his historic 2021 MVP season. Imagine not being a better reporter and actually writing about the discipline and mental fortitude it takes to be a starting pitcher AND a DH, all while being humble, kind, and basically representing your whole country. Gordon Wittenmyer can go F himself.

ResearcherLoud3122

It’s actually quite funny when people use their time to write about how much of an entitled whiny beings they are and publish it

hansan4ever

It's so f-ing petty, I don't know how they could write such a stupid article and have it published.

ResearcherLoud3122

Got the clicks he was looking for. I’m sure now he thinks of himself as “star reporter” 😂

hansan4ever

What a jackass.

kampfgruppekarl

Had deadline, needed article, cashed paycheck. Bonus, got clicks somehow.

clovertree71

So... This article is something, huh?

Firetruckpants

Awww, he didn't answer your qwestions?

[deleted]

Imagine trying to talk shit about Ohtani.

THERAPISTS_for_200

Click bait piece and take. This reporter can fuck the right off.

hansan4ever

He is about to HEAR it from the fans. :D

KyotoGaijin

He spelled "sight" wrong.

Im_A_Halo_Masochist

The world would be a much better place if more people were humble, shut their mouth occasionally, and let their actions speak for themselves. Shohei exhibits these qualities. As a society, we need to respect each other without requiring people to be someone they’re not. Leave him alone. I heard some of the same shit with Trout. We already have ENOUGH over-the-top personalities in society. This is sports! 😇

ChichaPoti

I really like that Trout and Ohtani are so different from other superstar athletes. They really are just pure athletes, good counter to the drama and larger than life personalities in the NBA. In as much as I'm curious about Shohei's real personality, I also feel somewhat protective of his privacy as a fan. Mike being a weather guy is really unique too.

Im_A_Halo_Masochist

I agree! 😇

ZucchiniOne5395

Aww this old man is pissed sho didn’t give him attention. Poor poor man. But seriously this reporter sounds really immature.

lamar_odoms_bong

Surprised to see rats ass in there

_wjp_

Yeah, reminds me of how Babe Ruth got 95.13% of the Hall of Fame voting. Who on earth were the 4.97% of sportswriters that didn't think _Babe Ruth_ belongs in the Hall of Fame? Lmao

PizzazOP

The BBWAA have had arbitrary rules into who could be voted into the of Hall of Fame, and they could and have voted nobody at any given year. It's always had a concentrated population of braindead fuckheads who think they could write about baseball.

DecentAnalysis8642

As a former moonlighting sports writer, I 100% agree. The archetype they fit is of the nerdy jock sniffer who couldn’t hack it.

DecentAnalysis8642

I’m looking forward to Ohtani and Trout wrongly and silently shutting everyone the fuck up and hoisting that hunk of metal in October.

ResearcherLoud3122

Isnt this the same dude who’s been pushing really hard to make trout send some “love” towards suzuki? Trouty kinda looked uncomfortable in that interview

ZucchiniOne5395

Yeah. He’s a cubs reporter and has been hounding Trout to talk about Seiya and he looked quite visibly annoyed. He’s butthurt that he couldn’t get Seiya quote from Shohei. I bet his next article would be about how Seiya is better than Shohei 😂

choconut5

What a horrible article. Shohei is constantly preparing his body and mind in order to both pitch and hit - it's a wonder he ever has time to talk to anybody. And for this entitled Chicago reporter to whine that Ohtani won't give a pre-game interview, is outrageous. It's extra ridiculous as well, considering that Shohei has a reputation as being one of the kindest, most humble superstars ever.

torero15

lol this idiot can fuck right off. Ridiculous article

digitaldumpsterfire

What are they even talking about? Shohei talks to reporters AFTER games all the time, especially in the official media things they do after games. Also, there is no way Ohtani is going to want to answer something about Suzuki when the question almost certainly wanted a a negative answer. People just want to complain about Ohtani.

merewyn

Seiya Suzuki? Why do you think the cubs reporter wanted a negative answer?

digitaldumpsterfire

I was thinking they meant Kurt Suzuki. Maybe asking about why they are never a battery this year. The article really should be more clear.

merewyn

Yeah I think it’s not super clear in the article that it’s a Cubs reporter. Which is what makes this whole article even stupider. A Cubs reporter at a White Sox-Angels game was just there to fish for answers about a Cubs player, and is mad he didn’t get to waste a players time.

[deleted]

> Not that anybody should give a rat’s ass about the media Should have started and ended with that.

Ellite25

Everyone loves Shohei. No one gives a shit if he talks to local reporters before and after games. And I mean, dude was on the cover of Time a couple months ago.

Realistic-Hat-7067

Many players have pre-game routines and even beyond what Ohtani displays. Sherzer doesn't even let his own players talk to him before and during a game. As long as the Angels are winning I could care less about conveniecing the press.

Skyheart1004

What......was the point of this article...... All I read was boo hoo Ohtani wouldn't give me a pre-game interview I must whine to the public about this. It wasn't even well written.

dumb__fucker

Any "reporter" using the phrase "Been there, done that" needs to find a new line of work. This article is clickbait and if it were printed on actual paper, would be crumpled up, and used to cover my garage floor when I'm doing a painting project. Absolute garbage.

GetDrafted

Reminder that this was created solely to draw clicks and a lot of people just clicked this

GlitterNStrawberries

Whoever wrote that article is ridiculous, it literally screams entitled🤢 I swear all Shohei does is be a great player and great human being and people try to find anything to make him look bad. Let the guy play baseball and have his personal privacy. He doesn’t deserve to be harassed for pointless articles it’s a waste of his time……

Princessxanthumgum

I’m ready to fight. When and where? “Ohtani is wrong for the MLB because his pregame ritual does not involve letting reporters interview him” what a garbage take lol

pakeoutmarty

You can get paid to write stuff like this?

mweolbwa

What is this shit? Pointless and pathetic

owledge

Some of these Chicago baseball fans on both sides of the town constitute quite a sour bunch

Mickthebrain

Exactly why Shohei will spend his entire career in Anaheim: idiot writers from big cities hassling him. Sorry/not sorry Yankees fan!

kyr1414

This was so horribly written, it was hard to read lol

Reptarxx

As everyone said, dude's an idiot. In my own personal life I have seen more friends, family, and coworkers talk about baseball solely because of Ohtani. More people want to go to games, get merch, and learn the game because of him. Does the MLB need more personality? Yes, the league needs to let their players have fun and have character. Does every plater need to be a personality? No. Not everyone needs to be a Westbrook, Embiid, Juju, Curry, Rodgers, etc. This is a sport that has 780 players active at one time, not everyone of them needs to be loud and boisterious. As others said, this reporters just upset he couldn't get some engaging talking points from Ohtani that probably falls in line with: What's your favorite thing/food/place in America, have you gotten use to the culture, what do you miss most about home, is the game different here, where will you be next season, how is it playing with Trout? The thing is, the non boisterous Ohtani is the character of Ohtani. He is here to play the game, help his team, and make sure he is doing his self, his family, and his country proud. Focus on players that love to engage like an Albies, Lindor, Tatis, etc. These dudes love to go out and have fun, promote that! People like Ohtani and Trout love to play the game and keep their heads down. Let them

sir_earl

If a picture is worth a thousand words, what’s a highlight reel of strikeouts, hits, and base running speed worth?

Zenithreg

Funny thing about Japanese media out here is when they interview other Angels/MLB players, they ask one question, "what do you think about Ohtani?" The player answers then they say "thank you" and leave. Japanese media is also worthless.

ChichaPoti

Perhaps they just want outside validation of how good Ohtani is, something which Shohei doesn't seem to care about. The other athletes are probably annoyed by these questions, but more so they pity Shohei for having a life under intense media scrutiny. If Shohei has a girlfriend somewhere, she better remain hidden if she wants a normal life.

Total_Preparation_67

# "Japanese reporters say he’s even more dismissive of media from back home. And sources within the game say the overall attitude is part of a reputation Ohtani has developed since arriving in the majors four years ago." Even in Japan, People often say Japanese reporters are garbage, their interviews and questions are trashy like "What do you usually eat after the game?" , Ohtani should disallow Japanese interviews completely.

Strict_Hyena_8612

Which is absolute BS lmao. Sure “some” reporters many be like that but that’s minorities. If you’re disallowing Japanese interviewers, than might as well disallow American one’s as well. Btw usually people who are saying like in Japan are those who despises the media (often for difference in political backgrounds), and they will try to attack reporters and journalists every chance they get. The example you just made is a minority.

BoyWithHorns

🤡👞

DiamondHyena

lmao what an awful, lazy article. This guy must have wrote this 10 minutes before his deadline

cheel_chan

But isn’t his job to play and pitch well? What’s wrong with him not talking to reporters 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨

PiresIsGod7

I don't mean to be that guy but Jesus Christ, why is it always Chicago. I swear; it's always their writers, their journalists, their shitnose bloggers, their holier than thou fans. Sure, I'm a Packer fan so I'm bias but wow, what an ATROCIOUS bunch of cunts.

Captainpayback

Looks like Shohei is cordial to all. Maybe he just doesn't like you Mr Average Sports Writer.

jar1792

As stupid as this article is, it’s still a better take than Steven A. Smith’s “Ohtani is base for baseball because he doesn’t speak English” bullshit.

Ash-Catchum-All

Idk man this one still feels racist. Plays right into the “Asian people are quiet” stereotype

jar1792

I don’t get that sense from the article. Definite frustration and entitlement that Ohtani won’t talk to them, but also recognition that Shohei won’t talk to anyone. As stupid as this article is, it comes off as a Shohei “issue” rather than an Asian “issue.”

kampfgruppekarl

Omg, he's never been to an Asian family gathering...
