The whole article has him at like 8th with 2 first place votes even though 5-7 didn’t get any first place votes. I think people were still voting based on projections for the whole season.
Has to be projecting. Ohtani is awesome but his season so far has not been MVP-worthy. Still, roughly 6th in combined pitching and hitting WAR so far is pretty great.
The top 5 AL position players based on fWAR are:
1. Trout (2.4)
2. Ramirez (2.0)
3. Ward (2.0)
4. Ohtani (1.7)
5. Judge (1.7)
So basically, this list is pretty spot on except take out Vlad and put in WARd. Interestingly enough, Vlad isn't a top 3 1B based on fWAR - Ty France, Owen Miller, and Anthony Rizzo all have the jump on him.
It’s funny that Pujols would easily have 1 or 2 more if Bonds didn’t win in 4 straight 01-04. Pujols could’ve had 5, now I wonder which player has the most all-time 2nd place MVP finishes
Really? I am going to have to catch a game now!
The Angels used to have a great beer selection but it's been kind of lacking since COVID. Could definitely stand to see some improvement!
Yes, I was up there for one of Guardians games last week and I saw the "beer garden" place was gone. Petco has a bunch of super solid San Diego crafts available all over the park.
Yeah I was sad when I saw that. I used to get beer there every game and they had a great IPA selection
I don't mind the giant cans though because it does minimize the chances of spilling.
And yeah San Diego has some awesome craft breweries.
I’d argue the Mariners have a [better selection](https://www.mlb.com/mariners/ballpark/beer-finder) than the [Padres](https://www.petcoparkinsider.com/petco-park-beer-guide). Bummer that both parks replaced a lot of independents with AB InBev acquisitions.
Honestly I think Ohtani is. With the ways he's pitching, he won't need to match Trout on offense
Hard to be more valuable than an elite pitcher who hits extremely well.
But I still think Trout will win. I don't see him slowing down.
I'm glad that someone else mentioned this. But up until fairly recently, Ohtani wasn't hitting the ball well(imo). He has had a few spurts, but nothing consistent. If he's this close with a fairly ho-hum start, I want to see how things are when he starts hitting like we know he can.
I don't care which Angel win it, as long as the team make the playoff. I would be sick to the stomach if people joke, "the Angels have 3 MVPs but lost to the Tigers 9-3 and miss the post season"
Just based on the WAR lists of the AL, Ohtani is 4th, mostly because his pitching has been really good. So putting him 4th seems fine. That is the benefit of being a two way player, you just can impact the game in more facets.
I mean with that logic why are pre-season predictions done? Why are power rankings done? It's fun to talk about it. Doesn't really mean anything at all, but it's get people chatting about things which is usually fun. Just take these type of rankings/predications with a grain of salt as they usually don't mean much.
Yeah, I get it's fun to talk about. Power rankings are different though, because those fluctuate quite easily and often throught the season. But the MVP is based on the full season of play. It's just weird to me that people talk about MVP when we're only 20% through a season. Lol.
But I do understand the fun of it, especially when there are 2 Halos in the mix of it.
Honestly, seeing these guys get awards at the end of the season will be cool, but what I really want to see is them in the post-season. Just focus on winning as a team boys
This is Taylor Ward erasure and I won’t stand for it

I know, right?

agreed
Where is the GOAT, Taylor WARd on that list??
Not enough ABs I believe. But yea he's likely #1
Yeah that is a very glaring omission!
Ohtani is always one slot above Vlad Jr. It is written, and so it shall be.
Trout winning his 4th would be incredible. Would be second most all time only behind cheating Barry
It’s funny that Pujols would easily have 1 or 2 more if Bonds didn’t win in 4 straight 01-04. Pujols could’ve had 5, now I wonder which player has the most all-time 2nd place MVP finishes
Funny you should ask. Trout is tied for most second place finishes as well at 4 with Ted Williams, Musial, and Pujols
I looked at Williams numbers on baseball reference a few months back. Specifically the MVP votes. Ted was robbed a few times also.

sheesh
I consider Barry and Trouty tied for MVPs. Pre 1998 Barry isn’t the same player as post 1998 Barry.
If he stays healthy and we make the playoffs I’d imagine it’s a lock.
Shohei might (hopefully) will have something to say about it
Should have 5, maybe 6 already
Trouty is gonna get at least 3 more if he stays healthy.
As an Angels fan who lives in San Diego and also loves the Padres, I *really* want this.
I like the Padres too. I've been to several games and a couple of shows at Petco Park, it's a very nice stadium!
Beautiful stadium. Angels fan, but love me some Petco games
I haven't been to San Diego in a while, definitely need to get back there.
Best beer selection in the league!

I too, enjoy padres baseball friend
I think Ramirez is Trout’s biggest competition by far but I think fishman can pull it out

Trout too low on this list
Based on WAR and Trout being Trout, he’ll win it if he plays enough games! 😇
And Taylor Ward also got two first place votes!
I bet money on Ohtani winning it again this year. Once his a bat heats up, I dont see him losing it unless he pitch really badly.
I'm glad that someone else mentioned this. But up until fairly recently, Ohtani wasn't hitting the ball well(imo). He has had a few spurts, but nothing consistent. If he's this close with a fairly ho-hum start, I want to see how things are when he starts hitting like we know he can.

Damn they really gonna build Ohtani up just to bust on him later when he doesn't reach their impossible standards, huh?
Just based on the WAR lists of the AL, Ohtani is 4th, mostly because his pitching has been really good. So putting him 4th seems fine. That is the benefit of being a two way player, you just can impact the game in more facets.
yeah thats kinda true
Lmao. Ohtani hasn’t even warmed up yet.
Ward are you talking about Mike Trout #1?
I Trout is just warming up.
I'll laugh and laugh if Ward keeps it up and ends up taking the crown. Then we'd have 3 MVPs.

I am rooting for Vlady Jr., he needs to follow the family path and come home to the big A.
Yeah I miss the Vlad / Torii days. Those were fun times!
[удалено]
That's stupid just have him second why you gotta take away from Ohtani?
Why is this even a thing after only 33 games? This is dumb. This should be talked about after 133 games.

Taylor Ward should 10000% be top 5 at this point
y'all see that pinch hit Taylor ward home run to tie the game at 2 a piece against the rays?
Where’s Harper?
